BryanMelvin -> SPwaw 4.5 Error message (12/22/2000 11:50:00 AM)

I installed 4.5 and am receiving this error message: Unable to allocate memory for VCR recording. Is this a bug - has anyone else seen this message? It occurs at scenario start, and turn end phases. Anyway to fix this VCR thing?? ------------------ MarauderMel

Fabio Prado -> (12/22/2000 12:10:00 PM)

It is happening here, too. But not in all scenarios...Anyone out there knows what may be causing this error message? Or is it a random thing? FAP ------------------ Fabio Prado fprado@fprado.com Webmaster - The ARMOR Site!

Fuerte2 -> (12/22/2000 2:07:00 PM)

Perhaps the 20 MB allocation is a bit too much on some machines? Now that the recording never gets bigger than 2 MB, it would be better to have a smaller VCR buffer. I'm assuming that it allocates one fixed buffer.

Kharan -> (12/22/2000 2:27:00 PM)

It could happen because you have less than 20-30 megs free disk space. Do you?

I have 3.89 Gig free hard drive space! Plenty with room to spare! ------------------ MarauderMel

skukko -> (12/22/2000 7:55:00 PM)

It is not about free space that you see. Windows uses swap file which it makes to it's own purposes and shares it to other applications. Size of the file is usually 20megs, so if it's full you'll get error like above Melvin has. Windows creates the swapfile if your win is configured as a server. Many of the publisher programs configures without warning your machine to it. I've made swapfile triple sized to my physical memory (64megs) (196megs)and don't get any vcr-errors. I had them while I made animations with 3Dmax2.5, not anymore. It is easy to do, but I'm not certain if this is the problem. Just trying to help mosh

skukko -> (12/22/2000 7:57:00 PM)

Forgot to say: If you don't create swapfile, windows uses whole disk to it. Wonder how that messes things... :P

Arralen -> (12/22/2000 8:51:00 PM)

Windows uses swap file which it makes to it's own purposes and shares it to other applications. Correct. File is "Win386.swp" Size of the file is usually 20megs, Wrong. With default settings, Windows sets the file size dynamically. It starts with around 20Mb, but may grow as big as RAM available. There are unconfirmed reports that Win9x does not use any SwapFile-space that exceeds the available RAM, but I'm not shure about this. so if it's full you'll get error like above Melvin has. Most likely wrong - Win would enlarge the file size, that's all, and with 64 MB RAM and therefore 64MB Swapfile you should be able to store a 30MB vcr file, shouldn't you ? Windows creates the swapfile if your win is configured as a server. If you don't create swapfile, windows uses whole disk to it. Wrong. Win creates swapfile by default, even on a 512MB machine. When set to "server" Win handles file transfers, caching etc. different, what is said to push performance. I'm getting this error myself, but I have 101MB swapfile (free), 128MB RAM (73MB free w/o SPWAW), 273MB free "TEMP" disc space, 45MB disk on the drive with SPWAW and only 3MB on C: So question is, where does SPWAW put this file? And may this error be cause by a software-diskcache (vcache with Win9x) that is smaller than the vcr-file may be ? (Mine is set to 16MB fix, but on most Win-machines run with standard settings which do not restrict the cache size, so it may use all available RAM ) I'll look further into this and keep you informed 'bout what I can find out Arralen

Paul Vebber -> (12/22/2000 10:46:00 PM)

Please let us know what you find out! What game mode are you in when this happens?

skukko -> (12/22/2000 10:49:00 PM)

Hi Aris Good to have someone who knows. I tested few things and pushed my resources little over: I copied a cd from another, had internet open and tried to start spwaw4.5. Result was that I finished to the desktop. I ended programs and tried to start but it didn't do it. After I booted whole system spwaw4.5 started again and played well, and I am able to lesson music from cd. just trying to help mosh

I am using 64 Ram on an 266 pent II machine and have latest version of Win 95. I have two Hard drives - 10 gig and a 4.3 gig. C drive uses the 10 gig HD. I had to put in a new IDE so that I could install an internal cd writer. Could this mess things up? ------------------ MarauderMel

Paul Vebber -> (12/23/2000 10:40:00 AM)

I tried to reproduce it and got it only after starting and quitting a whole bunch of applications many times but when I restart SP:WaW it cleared. PLease keep experiementing with this and see if there is a pattern to its occurance. Does it happen immediately after rebooting? Does it happen after starting and closing an app several times (i'm always on the look out for memory leaks) DOes it happen after quitting another game? Things like this can help us track down the cause.

kao16 -> (12/23/2000 5:26:00 PM)

I've had this message appear playing watchword Freedom. Using Thunderbird 700, 256MB Ram, 2oGB HD (~15GB spare). The swap file is set to default. Tried to create message again but so far up to move 7 in the same battle that was showing the message before. The only difference is that I'm logged on to the internet while playing this time.

skukko -> (12/23/2000 6:20:00 PM)

Arralen: Sorry to mix your name to Aris. Now I found first time this message at 4.5. So now I understand better what's bothering in here. I started WB:s WF-campaign and it gave me this allocation problem. I've played generated battles but have not get it. Also I've played few miniscenarios and haven't had problem. Sorry 'bout confucisng, I believed it was windows error that you were getting. I'll have my spanking hour tonight... mosh

Fabio Prado -> (12/23/2000 6:38:00 PM)

The problem seems to be related to how memory is used by the video card. I tweaked with the memory management and haven't got the VCR problem anymore. Pentium III 800MHz, 256MB RAM, Windows 2000 SP1, total paging file size 748 MB, total free disk space 3.4 Gb. Peregrine Falcon -> (12/23/2000 11:35:00 PM)

Happens to me too. I seems to be (?) IMO a simple Windows memory management problem. Using programs like MemTurbo (defragments RAM, increases free memory) before starting SPWAW seems to be working. Celeron 300@375mhz, 64mb, nVidia Riva TNT (16mb) Windows 98, fixed swapfile (max/min=200mb) Tweaked disk cache (tweaked everything ) [This message has been edited by Peregrine Falcon (edited December 23, 2000).]

Bing -> (12/24/2000 5:51:00 AM)

Problem seems to relate to memory management under Windows. I have a P2450, 128 Meg RAM, 8 Meg AGP Starfighter video card (3D accelerator, too, but believe this has zero effect on W@W), 5.6 Gig free HD space. Swap file set to Windows handling it, will run as high as 65 Meg, for W@W seems to stay right around 32 Mb. I ran the start of the U2R campaign under v4.5, after using Explorer to look at a file or two and IE5 to get mail and read these messages. Did not reboot, got the VCR memory allocation error message. Stopped, got out of game, rebooted, replayed and did NOT get the error message. We'll see - granted this is a minimal test of the new version, but it sure looks like whatever might be resident in memory needs to be flushed before game play. Bing

skukko -> (12/24/2000 6:29:00 AM)

I play games in vers 4.4 and burn cd same time: ok. I'm not able to even start vers 4.5 while burning. I start 4.5 first and then start burning: I'm able to get thru menus, but not to play. Same version of WB:s WFreedom gives mem.alloc. -error only in vers 4.5. Btw: ScenManagervers.3.0 of Chandla stays at memory when closed. I'm running 4.5 with 505k of conventional mem. Should it be tested if there is something? mosh

Warrior -> (12/24/2000 6:42:00 AM)

I have not had this problem, but I delete the steel.prf file every time I close the game (and occasionally during a game). Whether this has anything to do with it, I don't know, but it's not doing the VCR thing to me.

Okay, let me see. I did run other programs before trying 4.5 after rebooting. I deleted the prf file and reset the perferences to my taste and still had the error appear. Now, I deleted the prf file again and errors have vanished. Is it possible that the sequence one uses in the preferance menu could do this? This time I set perferences to Music off, Normal Squads, OP Fire set to 2 sec, C and C off. Previously I set these in this order Music off, OP Fire set to 2 sec, C and c off, Normal Squads, and had the error message appear. ------------------ MarauderMel

Christophe Jaureguiberry -> (12/24/2000 11:42:00 AM)

I've had this bug in the following instance: I am presently creating a scenario. After placing the units on the map, I go for my first test - bug doesn't appear. Then I program a few objectives and waypoints for units. Second test - I have the bug. It does not influence the game (in solitaire) except that it slows down scrolling and computer reaction time. Hope this can help. Christophe

Anzac -> (12/24/2000 11:44:00 AM)

WOW! You guys sure do know your pcs. All this talk of ninja machines has me drooling. As a certified A+ technician who knows a thing or two about pcs I can honestly say Arralen does know what he's talking about! And Peregrine I have to say tsk tsk about overclocking your Celeron. Hope it is worth it! I have a 466 with 64MB myself and SPWAW runs flawlessly. Anyway I've yet to install 4.5 but I hope everything runs fine. Happy gaming folks! P.S. Is there any other A+ (or better) techies out there? ------------------ Anzac "Lest We Forget"

Harry -> (12/24/2000 12:28:00 PM)

Hi! I have a AMD 333 MHz with 64MB and Win95. SPWAW 4.5: I tested a online-game against myself, because last time I played online I got a "Less then 5 MB of virtual memory" warning and SPWAW exits. I have a fixed 128MB swap-file (it really is a pagingfile). After launching and connecting to the internet (to simulate a connection) and quiting all unecessary applications, I have the following memory available: Free Physical : 33 MB Free Pagingfile: 128 MB After launching SPWAW I choose "online game" then craete a battle (meeting engagement, june 41, ger vs sov, 2000 points, small map) looking at the map, do the shopping and enter myself as axis and start the game. After deploying, my firts turn: SPWAW is very slow, because everytime I move the map, my HD-LED is blinking and I hear my HD working. During the deployment the scrolling were "smooth". Either he acceses the Pagefile for reading, or worse he is still allocating memory. Before finishing my turn I ALT-TAB out of SPWAW. Now my memory looks like this: Free Physical: 1 MB Free Pagingfile: 50 MB Turns 2: Free Physical: 1 MB Free Pagingfile: 46 MB Turn 3: Free Physical: 1 MB Free Pagingfile: 45 MB Turn 4: Free Physical: 0 MB Free Pagingfile: 44 MB dd But: After exiting SPWAW I have: Free Physical: 35 MB Free Pagingfile: 128 MB So the cleaning up is well done! It seems SPWAW eats a lot of memory.... [This message has been edited by Harry (edited December 24, 2000).]

Arralen -> (12/25/2000 6:16:00 PM)

???? It has gone away and I have absolutly no clue why ?! On the other hand, I haven't seen a rec-file grow larger than 1,8MB since, despite of arty barrages and all ?! So maybe the game decided to revert back to limited file size as I do not play e-mail games at all Arralen

Warhorse -> (12/25/2000 10:24:00 PM)

Interestingly enough, I only get this error message on WF, but not in my campaign which is at least 5 times the size!!??

steel -> (12/26/2000 1:18:00 AM)

It is happening here too, allocate memory not fit or something like that .Anyone out there knows what may be causing this error message? I have win98 128mb ram soundblaster live 6,5 Gt Asus Geforce2 display adapter celeron 333mhz steel

Cona -> (12/26/2000 6:46:00 AM)

Haven't seen this error yet. Since i read this message i've making several test and nothing - can't reproduce the error on my machine. I'm running: P. 233 MMX 96 MB RAM 96 MB fixed swapfile. PCI video card (may the problem be those AGP video cards and the shared RAM + lots of resident program ?) 4 GB HDD (SPWAW) 9 GB HDD (swapfile + W98 SE) Vcache is tweaked: Chunck 1024 KB. MaxSize: 10240 KB. File Names Cache 2048. Directory Cache 64. I'm able to run any scenario and campaign even with Word and Excel 2000 opened while connected to internet (doesn't work while winamp is playing but never did). I've installed version 4.0 and patches 4.1, 4.2, 4.4 and 4.5 Hope this helps. Feliz Aņo Nuevo a todos, Cona.

Anzac -> (12/26/2000 9:24:00 AM)

Alas I spoke too soon! I too am having the same problem as Harry. I got rid of steel.prf and then installed the 4.5 update. I started a WB scenario No Easy Place and twice in the AI's turn it has crashed to the desktop after displaying the less than 5 mb of virtual memory. I have a 466 Celeron with 64MB of ram running Windows 98. My swapfile is fixed at 128MB. I hasten to add that ever since version 1.0 this game has been rock solid and never crashed! There must be something wrong with this update. Is it possible to go back to version 4.4 from this one? I hope that all the boffins are working on it. Peregrine Falcon -> (12/26/2000 10:56:00 PM)

Yep! You are absolutely right Pretty lousy overclocking (+74/75mhz) but overclocking it to +400mhz seems to cause problems with several games I play.... (not SPWAW, but something else I dont want to mention in this board ) DVD's eat all my money now. No time (or money) to upgrade my PC all the time

Joe Osborne -> (12/27/2000 1:50:00 AM)

Folks, I was getting this message when I was opening a campaign turn in "Watchword Freedom". I was using all my open HD space for my swap file. I went and adjusted my swap file size to be twice my RAM, and then insured I had at least 20 mb of HD space beyond that. I then went and opened up the campaign Heroes of the Motherland...ran through about a half dozen turns and the error message went away. It looks like you have to carefully set up your swapfile and HD size, and then the prob goes away. I haven't tested this with scenarios.
