aprezto -> espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (3/30/2011 7:34:20 PM)

There is an event in the game where your espionage efforts can uncover a deal by another empire, with pirates, to attack a third empire. I cannot confirm it, but it appears that not telling the empire being affected by this deal means you take a hit on your reputation.

This may not be so, but I don't know any other choices I've made that could affect my reputation other than me not telling the empire being attacked?

If this is WAD then it appears espionage is a bunk. Why would you trumpet the fact you've made this choice, which is essentially what's happening when you're taking a reputation hit (all sides can see this after all).

Fishers of Men -> RE: espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (3/31/2011 5:58:39 PM)

If an empire has secretly paid pirates to attack your ally, it will improve your relationship with that ally to tell him who paid those pirates to attack him. It may also hurt your relationship with the empire who paid the pirates. I believe it only effects those empires involved and not your overall reputation level.

If your enemy is being attacked by secretly paid pirates, it could be good not to tell who did the paying if they are friendly to you.

Maybe someone else on the forums could verify this.

Never used or paid attention to this but from earlier discussions I think FoM is correct.

According to what the game says, Fishers is right. And, if you don't say anything, than nothing happens. You basically keep it to yourself. It shouldn't affect your reputation at all.

I haven't tried it out yet as, in all of my cases, I feel it's better to just keep that little bit of info to myself [:)]

aprezto -> RE: espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (4/1/2011 2:26:43 AM)

As usual my explanation is poor.

I am talking about 'reputation' - the thing you can influence by killing pirates (postively) or attacking allie's ships (negatively). Is rated such things as 'satisfactory', 'dubious' etc

If you keep quiet about your knowledge of the pirate alliance you've found (as opposed to telling the target, which will influence how the target will like you (positively) and the instigator (negatively)), then you seem to take a hit to your reputation

I am not sure this is what is occuring. There may be some other thing doing it, but this is the one 'choice' event I had and noticed drops in my reputation after it. Wondered if this was WAD (cause if it was it spits in the eye of secret espionage), or my imagination.

Oh - woops - Martial doctor - you did get what I was saying. Not sure it is affecting reputation or not, but something is. I had been turning down opponent's demands that I give them mines in their territory, but I thought this (also), did not affect reputation...?

It does as it's affecting your relations with that particular AI and this in turn affects your general reputation

MartialDoctor -> RE: espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (4/2/2011 9:34:49 AM)

I'll pay closer attention the next time I have this event. If what you are saying is true, aprezto, I would agree it doesn't make sense.

If you don't say anything, then no one else would know that you know anything about the pirates being hired. Thus, your reputation should be unaffected.

Igard -> RE: espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (4/3/2011 1:56:11 AM)

Just had this happen to me and you're indeed correct, apretzo. As soon as the message came up, I entered the editor and checked my reputation, it was at respectable (8). I then chose to keep the information to myself, and, with the game still paused, entered the editor again and my reputation was respectable (7).

If no one knows about this but me, then why does my rep take a hit? Even just a small hit like this is puzzling, unless we can assume there's an enemy agent in deep cover in my empire.

tjhkkr -> RE: espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (4/3/2011 7:28:40 PM)

it will improve your relationship with that ally to tell him who paid those pirates to attack him.

How do you tell an allied Empire this?

Bingeling -> RE: espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (4/3/2011 8:30:09 PM)

When you get a message about this stuff, you get two choices. Tell the target, or keep quiet.

tjhkkr -> RE: espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (4/3/2011 9:26:36 PM)

Thank you.
I probably have encountered it. But since it is my habit to destroy piracy, I probably do not get the message all that often.

Bingeling -> RE: espionage uncovers pirate alliance and reputation (4/4/2011 7:17:36 AM)

Hm, I get this many times in each game, often about pirates I have not discovered myself (I think).

Some monitoring station, or something random, intercept communication that empire A is funding pirates to attack empire B. I don't think it is linked to monitoring stations either, I usually don't build many. Except from in this latest game where I am too lazy to plant spies, and the AI also ends up building some with auto constructors if it is of the paranoid type.
