darkova -> tailor made mining stations (3/31/2011 8:46:03 PM)

so i have decided to design mining stations based on the lowest percentage resource rate on a planet or asteroid
essentially every 10% the lowest base resource rate the mining station has 1 extra exractor

is this a good design philosiphy or does anyone have something better?

Data -> RE: tailor made mining stations (3/31/2011 9:00:17 PM)

it is a good one as the percentage resource extraction rate from a planet or asteroid combines with the one on the extractor so having more extractors should offsset it
there were some tests made some time ago and some formulae found but basically your idea is the only viable one in this particular scenario

my only customs are gas mining stations in important home stations

I give them x3 cargo capacity,so thats 30,000 CC

plus two more gas extractors for a total of three

I need the fuel in my home & important colonies

Private sector foots the bill

I've been keeping two versions of my Gas Mining Stations: One with my best Hydrogen reactor and one with my best Caslon reactor. This way, if I'm building at a Gas Giant or Gas Cloud that has fuel, I can build the one that will be self-fueling. This can be extremely handy in distant locations.

Afaik mining stations do not self refuel, only refuel ships do it. They wouldn't need it either as they are static, all their requirements can be covered by collectors.

I think your right. They should self refuel to remove the ''Demand'' for fuel from the system ''Expansion Planner''.

It would be a terrible waste if freighters actually delivered fuel to a gas mining station.

You could watch one like a hawk and see if this happens or just edit the fuel onboard to max capacity.

I've watched them being built and confirmed that they start with an empty fuel bar and it fills itself up. They require free cargo bay space. The Hydrogen/Caslon goes into the cargo bay first and then gets transferred into the fuel cells. If the cargo bay gets full with other stuff then the self fueling can stop working. With two cargo bays I've had problems with that but with four it seems to work fine.

Even though it's true all power needs can be met with Energy Collectors, I can save by not building a bunch of them. I mean, one reactor is required, so I might as well make use of it. :) The pirates sometimes build self-fueling Star Bases too. That's where I originally got the idea.

Afaik that happens because of the CS, even if you don't see fuel in it's cargo bays. Every time they build a station they fuel it as well....it should happen for resort and research bases as well, for example.

While I also expected fuel to go from cargo bays to the fuel cells I was surprised to discover that it doesn't, even when I used a commerce center. I think it's because you need the docking bays for transfer and a station cannot dock to itself.
I may be wrong as I'm not playing right now but this is how I remember it works from the tests I did a while ago.

Fuel must be refined, filtered, purified...

Not just any hydrogen will do.  You need that fancy Deterium brand of the stuff.  Oh, the extractors can get the stuff close to pure (parts per thousand), but you still need a final pass through fractional distallation to get to the really (parts-per-trillion) pure stuff.

Almost the same process when producing alcohol [:)]
I mean nephtys wine and...the other wine label [:'(]

Data.....you been in Igard's Romulan Ale Cellar again? [sm=00000280.gif]

Data -> RE: tailor made mining stations (5/4/2011 12:02:21 PM)

I don't think I ever got out...
Good thing too, the damn thing is cloaked as well....romulans cloak everything, even the bottles inside the cellar and the alcohol inside the bottles.

Caesar_Augustus -> RE: tailor made mining stations (5/4/2011 6:28:30 PM)

Hmmm... So the Romulans cloak everything, eh? The bottles of ale and the ale? What say you to that, Igard? And even so the ale still disappears... cloaked of course... [8|]

Why, don't look at me....offcourse it's cloaked [:-]

Caesar_Augustus -> RE: tailor made mining stations (5/4/2011 7:21:04 PM)

Ah... Very shrewed, very sneaky... just like the Romulans...
That "cloaked" ale that somehow still "disappears"... hmmm...
Not bad for an android, Mr. Data. [sm=innocent0009.gif]

I dare both of you to demonstrate how the cloaked ale is disappearing.....up for a contest? [:)]
I just put a teleporter where my stomach should be

Remember that Lor has always been 'the evil one' and always
finds a way to manipulate and fool you into doing things
against your will. [:D]

Shark7 -> RE: tailor made mining stations (5/7/2011 12:05:59 AM)

I've gotten away from customizing much beyond arming them to the teeth to spank pirates.

The only truly custom 'mining' station I build any more is a big gas extractor listed as a generic type star base. This thing can be built anywhere, and since I give them a ton of docking bays and cargo space (along with being armed to the teeth), they make good refueling stations. Just build them at your large percentage fuel gas planets and gas clouds and watch the fun. The nice thing is that since it is a 'star base' and not a 'mining station' if I have a planet with great gas (say 98% caslon) as well as other resources, I can still build a regular mining station to get the other goodies...if you make the refueling station a mining station, it won't let you build a second station to get the luxuries or other regular resources.

Data -> RE: tailor made mining stations (5/7/2011 7:18:32 AM)

If it's ok can you post a screenshot with it's design? I'd like to get a sense of the scale of this thing. You make smaller (in the early game) or larger (late game) versions for this?
