Started GC as Sov on hard after soundly thrashing it on normal.

It's certainly different ballgame on hard, T8 and approaches to Moscow and Lenningrad under threat.

Down south, different story, still a distance to Kiev until real threat.

Anyway, the AI can find and do encirclments, although it sometimes misses golden opportunities that a human would exploit no doubt. Now, this is where the AI lets itself down. It will carry on attacking units it has isolated in current turn rather than wait till next turn until full isolation occurs and innevitable surrenders. A good few occasions Ive slapped my head thinking oh god , all those units doomed for him to rout them out the pocket!!

Not sure how hard or possible it would be to enable the AI to sense these oppotunities, but if it could it would be an even more formiddable opponent.

I'm playing Axis now (just cutting my teeth) but I'm about to boot up a new game soon as the Soviets. What you say is interesting for I too have been wondering how the German AI would handle encirclements, etc. and where to set the difficulty level.

Im sure Joel will still accept saves to send to Gary. Most of the AI that Gary worked on was Soviet, so send it to 2by3 games...Guys be very descriptive on your sends...Oh boy I hope I didn't overstep agian...

In the early game that's not such a bad idea. Even isolated units have ZOC and block rail building and movement of rear units to the front. It's better to blast through them and take a couple of casualties. Plus the units surrounding the pocket are not moving to Moscow. Also, if the isolated units are heavily fortified, it helps to launch an attack to reduce the fort level.

I played on GC as Sov vs AI on Normal, it was kind of a joke (occupied Berlin in September 1942). I started a new one on Challenging, and it is much better, it made it right to the doorstep of Lgrad and threatened Moscow, and achieved one large encirclement and almost pulled off a huge encirclement (60 units?) near Kiev which I was able to escape, with difficulty. (I got a little cocky after the first game...). In the mud now, and looking to see how it does in the blizzard, which is when it really broke down last time...
