Kubel -> Afghanistan Lap Top (4/5/2011 9:19:54 PM)

I'm deploying to Kandahar in late May and want to get a laptop. I'm not wanting anything expensive as the dust will eat it up. I want it mainly for Admirals Edition, War in the East, plus a few other Matrix titles. A few questions I have are:

1. Will a small 10" netbook be able to run AE graphics? I think not but no experience first hand.
2. For a Laptop, built in or external Optical Drive?

Any recommendations would be great. I would like to keep the cost in the $650 or less range.

Cheers

One more thing light weight 11-14 inch screen size would be optimal.[sm=00000436.gif][sm=00000436.gif]

Do you have access to the internet now...if so check out CNET laptop finder. Aswe a few questions and it gives you a load of choices.

Don't know anything specific about netbooks per se, but on my 5 year old desktop I use the "-noFire" option to cancel certain types of animations on the replay and in orders so the graphics don't get messed up. You could always try that.

Make sure any smaller laptop display you get can display at least 1024x768 resolution.  That's the minimum size for AE.

Thanks all. Been pretty busy in RL. Great advice all around, it has been a great help, otherwise I'm sure I would have bought a machine that didn't run AE and that would just bite. I will be purchasing one in a few weeks I'll let you know what I got and how good it works.

1.) As long as the screen resolution is high enough you can run it on a netbook. But 10" are quite small so could be a little annoying to play with it.

2.) Depends. There is no real drawback of a built in optical drive. Usually you can even change it quite easy if it is damaged. But it adds some weight and takes some extra space so the laptop is a little larger and thicker than one without an optical drive. Optical drives are quite sensible regarding to dust (especially the lens) so an external optical drive might be a good solution.

Beppi...good advice on Optic Drive...I tried AE on wifes HP 10" did not work. I will keep an eye on resolution for sure. Thanks.

I checked my wifes 10" netbook max resolution is 1024x600 ...

Try the Samsung NF310-A01 10.1-inch netbook. It's about $400.

It has a 1366x768 monitor so it should be able to run WitP-AE. I've been looking at netbooks and it looks like $400 is the floor for one with a monitor that runs WitpAE

You might need to buy some extra memory ~$25 on Amazon.

Well I just recieved my inexpensive Dell inspiron with a 14 inch screen...game works great.
Thanks for the help, I avoided a huge mistake because I would have purchased something with a resolution too low....now will I be able to continue my PBEM??? If not my gaming partner understands. [sm=00000436.gif]
