PzB74 -> Fly the dream: a flight in a WWII B-17! (4/18/2011 11:15:07 PM)

Went to the US for 3 weeks with work and one of my weekend targets was to visit Austin and get a flight in the Collings Foundations WWII B-17 bomber "Nine O Nine".

This was a great experience for only 425$ [:)]
Also had a ride in a Vietnam vintage Huey helicopter for a mere 100$
- The biggest attraction, a flight and a hold on the stick in the only WWII twin seat P-51 Mustang "Betty Jane" got a bit too expensive at 2200$...still on the Bucket List!

Will share some photos with you!

PS! If you'd like a flight, check out the Collings Foundations web site and you'll be airborne in no time!
It's a non-profit organization which only aim is to keep the warbirds flying.

Live a Dream

This is my favorite picture snapped in flight, had to support the camera with both hands to keep it steady!

Waist Gunner

[:)]

Trace your way back 50 years
To the glow of Dresden - blood and tears
In the black above by the cruel searchlight
Men will die and men will fight - yeah|
Who shot who and who fired first?
Dripping death to whet the bloodthirst
No radar lock on - skin and bone
The bomber boys are going home

I rode in the B-24 (which was The Dragon and His Tail then) about 8 years ago.  It was great.  Walking through the bomb bay in flight was a bit nerve wracking, I could see the world going by through the cracks between the doors.  I wore my father's WW II flight jacket and it was very handy for crawling around in the plane.  The interior pockets are horizontal, so I could slide the camera into one of those and move about with no worries of my camera bashing into anything.

I recommend it to anyone who can afford it.  It was well worth the money.

Bill

I've so far managed rides in B-17, P-51, and P-38.  Really want one in an F4U yet.  Maybe it'll happen ...

Spread out across a number of years, mind you. The last two, those were special and multiple times. Family friend lived with us when I was in high school. Guy dating her had just sold out his string of hamburger joints* to Pillsbury. He had been a fighter pilot back in the day, so he took some of his earnings and bought a few birds. When he came to visit her, he frequently flew up in one. I got rides ... the P-38 was WAY more cool than the Mustang. And a LOT bigger. He passed long time back. No idea what happened to his birds.

*little thing called "Burger King".

Awesome pictures! Thanks for sharing, and great to see you back on deck.  The B17 high up my list too, though I probably would have gone for the Mustang... 2200 is a hurt, though.
