patton1950 -> Version 3.4 won't run (4/20/2011 10:36:46 PM)

installed OK, it said, but whenever I try to run the program, the main screen (with menus across the top) opens for a second, then vanishes before I can even click on anything.

I changed ini file to generate a log; after a few lines which, to my untrained eye, seem to indicate ("Resized 705,1366", then "Resized 685,1366), that the program was trying to adjust the screen size to that of my computer (1366,768), the next line said "graphics_init failed", then the log closed.

Any idea what "graphics" issues is getting in the way of the program running like it should??

Any idea how I can fix this and make the new version run?

I also have the beta patch installed, and that runs fine, as well as the "old" 3.2.297 (sic) version, which also runs fine.

Thanks for your help!

Panama -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/21/2011 2:24:13 AM)

What OS are you running? Try right clicking the Opart3.exe file, click properties and click on the compatability tab. Pick a type and see how it runs.

patton1950 -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/21/2011 3:55:05 PM)

I'm running Windows 7 Professional...Direct X 11. (DX Diagnostic file attached...)

I tried running it as administrator and that didn't help, and I tried the compatibility troubleshooter and that got me nowhere, either.

It seems to me that the "graphics init failed" message in the log file must have something to do with the problem, but I don't know what. What causes that kind of a failure?

I'd appreciate any suggestions. I am going to try uninstalling and reinstalling, but it said it installed OK originally, so I'm not confident that will change the results.

patton1950 -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/21/2011 5:03:06 PM)

I downloaded the 3.4.2 patch again and re-installed it, and it made no difference; attached is the log file I get when I try to run it.

A couple of interesting phenomena that may help diagnose: when I installed it, the last screen of install (when it says installed OK) said to use the desktop icon to start the game, but the install did not leave me any desktop icon. And, when I tried to uninstall my earlier install, the 3.4.2. version of the program did not show up in "control panel - uninstall a program", even though the earlier 3.2.29 (sic) version of the game is listed. I just checked "uninstall a program" again, and the 3.4.2 version still does not show up in the list....

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/21/2011 5:33:52 PM)

Kamerad, can you post your Opart3.ini file? What resolution do you want to use, what monitor you got?

patton1950 -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/21/2011 6:01:03 PM)

Here's the ini file....

I have a laptop with a landscape-oriented monitor; according to the info I get when I check display properties, the resolution is 1366 x 768. The computer is a Lenovo G55; previous post included the DirectX diagnostic file.

Am open to any ideas; please help!

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/21/2011 6:53:04 PM)

OK, change...
ChangeScreenResolution=Y
MaxScreenY=768
MaxScreenX=1366

and

ScreenY=768
ScreenX=1366

That should do the trick. I got a netbook and an external monitor 19" and 1440x900 and it works more than OK.

patton1950 -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/21/2011 9:43:00 PM)

That didn't do it, either....

I am currently running both the earlier version (3.2.29.27) and the earlier "beta" patch (3.4.0.178) without any trouble.

What changed between 3.4.0.178 and the "full" patch (3.4.0.202) that could be causing the latest version not to run?

And where can I get the later beta patch (3.4.0.201) to see if that will work?

Even after I made the changes you suggested, the log file still says "graphics init failed".

I assume that having the multiple versions on my computer at the same time is not an issue - never has been - but what do you make of the fact that the install of the full patch does not create a desktop shortcut and does not put a program that can be uninstalled in the list of programs when you go to windows uninstaller?

Looking for ideas!

Neilster -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 6:32:48 AM)

I'm having exactly the same problem [:@]

Got a machine a few years old running XP. Everything totally stock and updated.

Cheers, Neilster

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 8:00:36 AM)

Got all different versions insatlled and works fine; inlcuding the 'crappy' 10" netbook version, connected to a mega 50"+ telly etc.

*attached my opart3.ini* just change the .txt to .ini and drop me a line. Did you lads try the Opart3Slow.exe as well?

kLiNk, Oberst

Neilster -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 10:47:08 AM)

Problem fixed. I did a complete reinstall and applied the update to its folder. The only other thing I did differently was to make the quickstart icon apply to all users. As I didn't have an icon appear on my desktop first time either, I suspected that may have been part of the problem. I also started the game from this icon, as instructed. Good luck Patton1950.

Cheers, Neilster

p.s. Thanks for the help attempt Oberst_Klink

patton1950 -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 2:19:28 PM)

Still having no luck....

I uninstalled all versions that I could figure out how to uninstall, then reinstalled in order (3.2.29.27, then alpha 3.4.0.178). They both seem to work OK.

Then I tried installing 3.4.0,202. It said it installed OK, but no desktop shortcut. And, when I try to run it, same thing happens: game window opens for a brief second, then vanishes.

I've attached a combined opart.ini and log.txt file from 3.4.0.202 showing current ini settings, and the log that I get when I try to run it. I changed the screen settings as previously suggested, but you can see that I still get the graphics init failed message.

I repeat my earlier question: what changed from 3.4.0.178 to 3.4.0.202 that can be preventing the newer version from running?

Also, where can I find the 3.4.0.201 beta patch, so I can try to install that?

Appreciate any help!

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 3:23:42 PM)

Kamerad, the Beta patch can be donwlonaded when you have registered your game at the Matrixgames community support site. http://www.matrixgames.com/members/

I also recommend, in case you want to use older versions, make a backup of all Opart3.exe.

The chsnges are in the 'what's new' document and some details can be found here, too:

http://www.operationalwarfare.com/

I run XP, so ain't having any 7 issues. What happens if you start the game with Opart3Slow.exe?

patton1950 -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 3:55:47 PM)

The 3.4.0.201 beta no longer appears on the Matrix site anywhere, at least anywhere that I can find...

I can't believe there is not a solution to this...

Do I have to install the 3.4.0.202 over my old versions, so they no longer exist??? Some threads seem to suggest that.

I uninstalled all versions, then re-installed 3.2.29.27, then 3.4.0.178, and they both work OK, but when I then install 3.4.0.202 it doesn't work; opens for a second, then vanishes.

Help!

Neilster -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 4:07:04 PM)

patton1950, did you notice in my post the stuff about making the start icon available to everyone? Try it if you haven't.

I understand your frustration because before I fixed my problem, my attempts to reinstall the previous version failed, leaving me with no TOAW III at all [&:]

Cheers, Neilster

Oberst_Klink -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 4:27:46 PM)

Don't create more than one installation folder for TOAW. Install the versions step by step. Backupt the Opart3.EXE of each version; I renamed them, too. So, it should look like this *see screenshot*.

1_Lzard -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run (4/22/2011 4:58:55 PM)

As 'Klink' says........I normally use the 'version' to rename the exe, eh? This allows one to keep the various .ini files the way you want them, and allows one to use the different .exe's.

It would appear that Patton will need to get a 'working' version of ToaW up first, and then apply the various executes to the main folder. I'd suggest using the 3.2.29.27 setup and THEN applying the new exe's. I normally DL the new ones and extract to a seperate folder, copying the exe and putting it in the system by itself.

Sounds wierd, but it works for me! (XP PRO, P4cpu)

patton1950 -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run - IT WILL NOW! (4/22/2011 5:57:27 PM)

OK, I got it running, it seems....

Apparently the problem is that I set up 3.4.0.202 in a separate folder. When I copied the 3.4.0.202 exe to the 3.2.29.27 folder and opened it from there, it worked! Of course, it first deleted all of my saves from the 3.2.29.27 folder; fortunately, I had them backed up...

So, I now have three versions running: 3.2.29.27 and 3.4.0.178 in their own folders, and 3.4.0.202 with its own folder (where the saves from that version are located....), but running out of an exe file (named 3.4.0.202; as suggested, I renamed all of the exe files with their version number...) in the 3.2.29.27 folder....I've tested a few opens and saves with the various versions, and they seem to work now - 3.4.0.202 apparently is no longer deleting the saves in the 3.2.29.27 folder, either.

What I don't know is what graphics I am running - since I am opening 3.4.0.202 in the 3.2.29.27 folder, is it using those graphics? Also, so far all versions seem to no longer be able to remember choices like "no sound" or "show hex outline"; I have to re-set those every time I open....

But, heh, it least I can run 3.4.0.202!

But what I don't get is why will that version not install in a separate folder - and why doesn't it warn you of that when you are installing - even though I can run both of the earlier versions out of separate folders.

BTW, what led me to attempt what finally worked was going into regedit to see what entries there were for the game; I saw that the only entry was for 3.2.29.27, so I began to suspect that I needed to run 3.4.0.202 out of that folder...

Now, final question (for now): if I install 3.4.0.202 over again, in the 3.2.29.27 folder (where it has to be to run), will that "wipe out" 3.2.29.27, so I won't be able to run that anymore"? I still have a game going in that version, and need to keep it and 3.4.0.202 (and beta 3.4.0.178)? I've been able to run multiple versions before, but I always had them in separate folders; if I put 3.4.0.202 and 3.2.29.27 in the same folder, will they both work? Will all of their save files be commingled?

Thanks to everyone for all of your help; I hope the information I posted above will help the next poor slob who has the problem I was having!

Telumar -> RE: Version 3.4 won't run - IT WILL NOW! (4/22/2011 8:51:43 PM)

You need to rename the TOAW 3 exe in the 3.2 folder. Then install 3.4 over it. So you have both exes in that folder. Then you can also rename the 3.4 beta exe and copy it into the 3.2 folder after or before you install 3.4 over it.

All different versions can run from within the same folder, but i think that's clear now.
