Ketza -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (5/23/2011 9:34:33 PM)

I saw the same type of casualty 3-1 Axis favored casualty results when I counter attacked in the snow after blizzard. Later in the clear turns after the mud I saw a marked increase in Axis casualties with the same type attacks with simular odds.

Will be interested to know if you see the same trend.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (5/25/2011 8:50:25 PM)

Turn 35. February 12 1942.

The Soviets continue to press forward in the Tula area, but there is no trouble putting together a new line. If they continue forward here, they will create a bulge, which offers some possibilities for the spring...[sm=00000622.gif]

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (5/30/2011 10:13:03 PM)

Turn 37.

Continuing pressure in the Tula - Orel area. The Soviets are slowly gaining ground. In other parts of the front only local attacks and counteratacks.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (5/31/2011 9:43:59 PM)

Turn 38 - March 5 1942.

Snow over most of the front. In the area north of Stalino, an opportunity presents itself, and a modest snow offensive is started. A mid size pocket is created.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (5/31/2011 10:08:23 PM)

With the winter now almost over, here are some conclusions.

* The Soviet winter offensive was weak and didn't cause any real problems. The only place where territory was lost was in the area of Tula - Orel. Both these cities were lost, and at the most 5 hexes of territory.

* Reasons for this is probably the weak state of the Soviet army. Only in february were the Soviets organised in shock armies and had the strength to make a serious push, and by then German combat value was recovering.

OKH plans for the spring.

1. A two pronged offensive to eliminate enemy resistance in the Moscow area.

2. An offensive to cut off and destroy enemy formations in the Orel - Tula area.

In East Prussia is the completely rested and recuperated 4th panzer army of three panzer corps. It will immediatelly be sent to positions west of Orel, ready to take to the offensive as soon as the weather allows. There are also 6 infantry divisions that were kept in Poland so as not to unecessarily expose them to the Russian winter. These will be sent to reinforce the front around Moscow and give the necessary offensive punch.

Belao an overview of the fron with offensive plans indicated.

Still mostly Snow. The early spring offensive north of Stalino continues.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/2/2011 6:41:56 AM)

Units destroyed in the recent encirclement.

Note: Destroyed Axis units are almost exclusively disbanded FZs.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/2/2011 5:58:45 PM)

Turn 40, March 19 1942.

The southern pocket operation is concluded, and mud sets in in that sector of the front.

The Soviets continue pressing in the Tula area, but reinforcements are now arriving in the area. The 4th Panzer Army is making ready to vacate their cozy winter quartes in East Prussia, but rail capacity limits the mumber of units that can be sent to the front.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/3/2011 12:54:59 PM)

Turn 42, April 2 1942.

Nothing dramatic happening at the front, so I thought I'll post some statistics.

Losses since turn 24 (when blizzard started) are 732946 men 8004 guns and 1114 AFV for the Axis, 1118225 men, 20074 guns and 1890 AFV for the Soviets.

Below losses and OOB turn 42.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/3/2011 12:56:32 PM)

Air losses. I must confess I am not an air expert at all, I put the airbases close to where I want the effect and hope they will do their job. Looks good so far though (I think).

And production. This is filtered to German production.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/3/2011 8:35:05 PM)

Turn 44.

Time to do something about the Soviets in the Tula salient. The leading corps of 4th panzer army has just arrived, and has been hidden in nearby woods to conceal their presence. They go straight into battle and smash an armored fist into the soft underbelly of the Soviet Tula penetration. They meet up with an offensive effort from the 2d panzer army north of Tula, and best units in the Soviet army suddenly find themselves cut off.

Turn 45. April 23 1942.

The Tula encirclement holds! Here is a screenshot before German moves.

I reprint a comment from my opponent: "shocked though my whole shockarmy gone".

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/5/2011 7:11:33 AM)

The Moscow area after German moves. Pocket partly reduced, but it takes time in the mud. Just North of Moscow, some preparatory attacks were made, but that has now stopped due to the mud. One panzer corps from 4th Panzer Army has just been transferred to 3d Panzer army in preparation for the thrust east to encircle the enemy in the Moscow area, as soon as the ground is suitable for offensive operations.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/5/2011 7:13:38 AM)

The Crimea after German moves turn 45. One panzer division has been transferred to 11th army, to make it feasible to clean out the Crimea when the clear weather arrives.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/5/2011 1:12:12 PM)

Turn 46. April 30 1942.

The last units in the Tula pocket surrenders. Misled by red propaganda and intimidated by the revolvers of the commissars at their backs, the last Red units fought with utmost desperation. The 4th Shock Army and the 60th Army have virtually ceased to exist. Here is the tally of destroyed units.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/5/2011 6:31:23 PM)

The OKH has been considering plans for the coming summer offensive. An inventory of industrial targets in the area beyond Moscow shows that there are a number of attractive targets within striking distance. If not all can be reached before the Soviets evacuate them, just forcing the Soviets to move them should cause a dent in production.

Stage one of the coming offensove will be the elimination of Soviet forces in the Moscow area, stage two will be a strike eastwards for the industrial targets.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/9/2011 5:30:36 PM)

Turn 48. May 14 1942.

4th Panzer Army takes advantage of an unexpected mid May snowfall (!) to launch a little offensive that surrounds Tula.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/9/2011 5:35:55 PM)

Meanwhile, SS LAH is refitting. STill not very impressive in CV. The new recruits don't have the experience of the veterans now in POW camps in Siberia.

The Fuhrer has forbidden the division to wear their armbands until they have redeemed themselves.

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/9/2011 5:36:37 PM)

Turn 49. May 21 1942. Still snow in the central weather zone, and the rivers are frozen!!!!
OKH meteorologists are starting to wonder if a new ice age is in the offing...

Unfortunately, the Soviets had strong forces left near Tula and struck back, opening a path to their surrounded units. We close the encirclement again. Map after German moves turn 49.

Are you able to use infantry at all in the initial breakthrough attacks?

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/9/2011 7:37:10 PM)

Yes, why shouldn't I? It is not as easy to concentrate infantry in the required amounts in 1942 though. And the Sovs are tougher. One line of lever 3 forts after another...

Mynok -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/9/2011 10:01:34 PM)

Just curious if they were useful or ended up getting massacred.

The Ice Age continues! This is the weather map turn 50 28 May 1942. Snow and ice. Come on, there will not be snow and frozen rivers in Moscow at the end of May! [X(]

Tarhunnas -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/10/2011 10:55:29 PM)

Turn 51. Jun 4 1942.

Ok, the snow has ended. Mud in the center, so operations around Moscow and Tula have ground to a halt.

In the South, 4th Panzer Army has been revving their engines, and now with clear weather they are let loose. An almost successful encirclement east of Kharkov, just one hex missing. But the mud will do some of the work for us.

Map of Kharkov area after Axis moves.

Checked leader losses. It appears that Guderian has gone and died! [X(] Wonder how that happened. And Antonescu! Isn't he supposed to be far from the front? Is there some way to se where, when and how they died?

Klydon -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/11/2011 12:48:04 AM)

Wow.. lot of dead Rumanian generals there.

Ouch on losing both Guderian and Model. Heinrici is damm good too.

Ketza -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/11/2011 4:15:15 AM)

Who let Hitler loose with a Luger?

Mynok -> RE: 1.04 The Wolf and the Bear (no Gids) (6/11/2011 4:24:10 AM)

Man, that's some tough leader losses there.
