I am pretty sure that whem my PBEM opponents put up a coherant and thought out defense the game becomes unplayable and broken.

No doubt.

Although I recall you complaining about the defense modifiers associated with swamp hexes some months back. Was this a game related code error, or something to do with your opponents ability to play? Turns out it was a code error. But Had 2by3 indicated swamps defense modifiers were WAD in the as released form of the game than I reckon by your logic we would have to chalk up you inability to crack open swamp defenses to your poor playing abilities.

Actually, I complained (in my own way of joking) about how it seemed too easy after the reduction/fix. My only complaint that I have had from the get go is how easily the Soviets can coordinate attacks early one. But that one is thorny problem

This game is broken! Darn you all! My Slovakiansshould be able to conquer the Earth by July 12th 1941.
The only way Joel and Gary can redeem themselves in mine eyes is to design a campaign game about the Diadochi wars.

And, PDH, there ARE people in Wyoming? I thought it had been abandoned to woolly mammoths years ago.

I like the new refit mode and people do need to realize adjusting TOE for the Germans especially is a useful feature.
At risk of labeling myself a Nazi collaborator, i (as a new player) am having problems doing much in 1941 against the AI as the AI does not do the retarded things that Stalin did, but i am forced to play with Hitler idiocy rules. Transferring troops from East to West all the time, no changing of factory productions etc.

People in Wyoming are a tough lot - all 12 of them.

12 in state that big? Wow....no wonder you need panzers to deliver the mail. [:'(]

Useful, but can be a PITA at times. Micromanagement - even when necessary - is not fun.

I would also like to point out that suggesting the use of the Commander's Report and that adjusting TOE is useful is a far better response to a complaint about micro-management than to say "lrn2play noob!" (with $5 words of course) as was one response.

The refit mode revision does sound appropriate, and I had been assuming that I had to take my guys off the front to do refits anyway. And when I occassionally found them on the front in Refit mode I would think "blast! What is the penalty for fighting in refit mode anyway?"

(Dammit Hanz, we're in combat! Put down the beer already!)

Agreed! Other than the first turn stupidity (No, no, ignore the massed German army on the front, they mean no harm) Stalin is suddenly not a complete loon, while Hitler remains one.

What I am figuring is that for the first few months, throw caution to the wind, and send your panzers east, fast! Keep them supplied by air until the rest of the Heeresgruppe and supply lines catch up.

On a side note - I find Eastern Front games curious because I can't really find myself liking either side. Of course the German is the most challenging side to play, so its fun.

On another side note - Don't kid yourself kids and cats, this is not a 'simulation', its a game. Don't be afraid of the term, its not that bad. 2by3 is trying to be as faithful to the source as they can, but there is a lot of compromises made to make it something that can be handled by a lone human with no military experience at a computer.

Alternately, I suppose you could claim that all games are simulations (Monopoly is a simulation of real estate, just not a very good one).

And my final thought before I return to Lurk Mode - ITALY CAMPAIGN! I want this engine to be used for the Italy campaign! The full campaign is rarely modeled, usually just operations in the campaign, not the full 43 to 45 grind.

See, I said it was a game a long time ago.

I suppose I am in the wrong because I have fun playing it. I have yet to be outraged by WITE...I suppose I am missing the experience.

:)

Obviously! In the modern world, software like War in the East is purchased only to make you angry! If you aren't frothing at the mouth due to Nerd Rage, you are doing it wrong!

And yes, even an old Grognard can have Nerd Rage. Beleive me, going on in detail about WW2 makes us just as much of Nerds as if we were going on in detail about Star Trek or whatever. And gets you just as much disinterest and as many funny looks!

(I've done both, so I know!)

To be honest I find reading forums about games to be depressing. I always see posts full of nerd rage about all the things wrong with a game that I had been enjoying, and I do sort of feel that its spoiled the experience for me. I hadn't noticed these things before, but now I'm aware of them.

In this case I mostly just read to look for tips and information, and avoid the rage threads. I'm onto my nth start (I've actually lost count) as the Axis in '41 and each time I refine it a bit more. I'm trying to get to that mystical 4.5 million Soviet dead and captured before the blizzards hit and my forces get punched in the teeth.

In this thread I picked up some tips on Refit being of benefit even if the unit is at max strength, and found out that there is no downside to using Refit all the time (although I still prefer to turn it off when a unit is in contact with the enemy, I'm still running 1.03 and have to do that manually).
