Just wondering what everyone's opinion would be on the best choice for a new 4x space game: Armada or Distant Worlds? If you could give a couple of supporting arguments as to why you think so, that would be great.

Personally I'm leaning toward Distant Worlds, but I'm not really sure why.

Any info or opinions given will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I only play Distant Worlds, I have checked out the Armada forum and it's not as busy.

I have read both AARs. Armada's graphics don't look very good.

Armada is turn based, DW is real time. Depends on which you prefer.

I don't think you would regret buying DW. Some posters even recommend buying both.

Yeah, this question has been discussed several times just in the past week. Here's another recent thread comparing the two.

Personally, I'm a little more partial to Armada 2526, but Distant Worlds is also very good. It really depends on exactly what you look for in a 4x title.

That means diddly, not least because the devs have their own forum, and unlike DW, Armada is also sold through all the main digital retailers (GG, Impulse and now Steam) as well.

They are certainly no worse than DW's. Both are perfectly adequate.

Either is a good buy and both a better one, but if money is an issue get one with the expansion rather than both without. As with Galciv 2 and SotS, the expansions offer significant improvements well worth the extra.

After all that, though, I'd plump for DW as well. To me it just offers something genuinely new in the 'living galaxy' approach and I just find it more absorbing and immersive. Against that, Armada offers much more 'classic' 4X gameplay with good mechanics done, decent AI and MP if you want to play it.

I like and play both but Armada has more tools and strategy's to play with and different winning conditions for all the races.DW is kinda a one trick pony when you are talking about the actual strategy involved in the gameplay.

Thanks all for the input, and the links which I started to see after making this new thread. Sorry about that.
Mods feel free to shut this one down.

Armada looks to be more of a traditional turn-based 4x'er in the Master of Orion style.

Distant Worlds is something new and innovative that has a deeper portrayal, and more detail, in realtime. The difficulty is easily scalable, though.

I prefer Distant Worlds because your "empire" feels much more alive what with your private sector running about and doing their economy business on their own. Though realtime, it's not a clickfest and has a nice, somewhat slow, steady pace that feels just right for me to get any micromanagement in, and spy on my little digi-people, without having to pause much at all.
