Sun Tempest -> Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 10:10:58 AM)

I never imagined such a poor strike for Japanese, at least in term of ships sunk. Thank God it was only against AI.

Overall only 164 + 27 (2nd strike) DBs and TBs participated at the strike, and all Kates except one attacked with bombs and not with torpedoes. At the end of the day, only 1 CL was sunk and the most heavily damaged BB had 60 sys and 54 flt. On the other hand, the PH airforce was pretty much obliterated, for very little losses for Japs.

Among the reasons for the poor result could be the absence of one flattop (Kaga in special mission), although its Vals complement was distributed among 2 carriers (Akagi and Soryu). Other than that, I see no obvious reason, except luck (better said lack of it)[:(]

Any opinions on how to avoid this "lovely" result (for Allies) [&:][&:]

LoBaron -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 10:24:07 AM)

Sun Tempest, did you transfer both squads of Kagas complement to another
flattop each?
If yes I think you overstacked your carriers, preventing them to launch.
The maximum # of planes per carrier is 110% capacity.

This asumption is enhanced by the low number of Zero escorts which indicates that
some squads are missing on the strike.

Whether the Kates drop 800kg bombs or shoot torps is mostly a matter of luck.

Atilla60 -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 12:02:26 PM)

@Sun Tempest

FWIW, I once did it even worse, and that was in a PBEM. Historical first turn BTW.

I barely scratched the Batlewagons, and the only ship sunk, was a minelayer.

Kind of made my initial speculations, whether or not to commence a second strike, fade away.[:)]

CyrusSpitama -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 12:26:12 PM)

My recently restarted game only saw 1 or2 small ships sunk on the 1st day's attacks. I had bomb hits all over the place and many heavily damaged BBs. When I went for the 2nd day of attacks I had little plane losses due to good numbers of plane hits on the 1st day. The 2nd days attacks only saw 1 BB sunk but I am fairly sure I pretty much cleared the rest of the smaller ships from their docks :) I never did load as the US to see the actual losses but then again, my 2nd day appeared to go so well it was not really a big concern for me.

Major SNAFU_M -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 2:21:15 PM)

I just started a new Allied GC with BabesLite and I have no ships sunk after the initial raid at PH.  I have 3 BBS that will be out of commission for 250+ days or so.  But I expect all of them to make it at this point and the majority to be back in the war by Fall '43.

Actually, I have 1 and maybe 2 BBs that *could* sortie out with some CLs and DDs, if I knew where to send them.  I did find 2 BBs and 4 AOs off to the NW, but I don't think I'll prosecute the target.

I an using the K9 beta

I had a pretty awful first strike on Pearl in my game with witpqs testing out my Mod...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To top the day off either because of weather or because they spent the night and morning dodging cruiser shells, KB then failed to launch any aircraft and witpqs's surface units got away scot free.

So I think I'ze gots ya'll beat...[:D]

PaxMondo -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 3:56:38 PM)

Don't disagree it was bad, but not worst.  Not even close to some of the PH strikes I have had.  I had one where only one squadron of Kates launched torps, and only one torp hit.  Then, the Kates all dropped 250kg bombs, not the 800kg.  So, I think the result was one BB needing repair for like 45 days.  That was it.  [:(]

crsutton -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 4:18:04 PM)

Yeah, it was pretty weak. But look in the bright side. You sunk a modern CL. I find one of those to be worth about four old BBs anyways..[;)]

jeffk3510 -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 4:29:54 PM)

I still think the PH result are overrated in AE or WITP for that matter....The old battlewagons are a pain in my ass to work with at least without sufficient LBA or Carriers, which the Allies don't just go poking around every island early in the game with the Japs running wild...IMO...

I know it has been said before AND debated for historical accuracy...yadayada...who cares... but I think a Manila strike against all of those subs is far more constructive than a PH strike. If that happened to me I feel like I would be dealt a blow without all of those subs early on. Dud rate high? Yes, but that is not the point...

crsutton -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 4:56:00 PM)

You are right. The Allied player is not going to win or lose the game by virtue of the loss of his old BBs at Pearl. They are nice to have but not critical.

inqistor -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 5:10:49 PM)

Well, first thing I see, is that at least one KATE unit was flying at 9k, so they were level, not glide-bombing (if you do not use beta-patch). And indeed, it is possible, that at least one CV was overloaded, and did not launched.

I actually have seen PH strike, when NO SHIP was sunk. With normal pre-defined settings of KB.

Buck Beach -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 6:31:28 PM)

I recently was questioning the poor Japanese results from turn one everywhere and not just at Pearl. I ran several turns using the different Betas and with DBB and stock. I reloaded the Beta C and tried again with same results. Finally I figured out I had checked and turned off the Dec 7th surprise attack. Boy did that make a difference.

Huge difference that. [:@]

I rechecked the turn and I observed that in addition to Kaga's Val sub-groups, the only groups that did not participated at the strike were Zuikaku 1 (Zeros) and Zuikaku 3 (Kates) No CV was overstacked, for example Akagi received 2 Val subroups from Kaga for a aggregate total of 80 planes.

undercovergeek -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/29/2011 10:48:47 PM)

pffft - youre all moaning old women, ONCE and only ONCE and no i dont have a replay my planes didnt take off at all, i came down a bit further south for the attack and got stuck in some weather, and as part of the grand master plan nothing else US was hit - i didnt even start the war - the Americans did - treacherous they are!!!

GaryChildress -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (4/30/2011 11:52:57 AM)

I once played a team game where my team mate was controling KB and on turn 1 KB only sank a PT boat at PH. [:'(]

@Sun Tempest

FWIW, I once did it even worse, and that was in a PBEM. Historical first turn BTW.

I barely scratched the Batlewagons, and the only ship sunk, was a minelayer.

Kind of made my initial speculations, whether or not to commence a second strike, fade away.[:)]

Funny I thought it was a good turn [:D]

Atilla60 -> RE: Worst PH strike ever (5/1/2011 2:23:23 PM)

Naaah, the first turn in our current game was much more fun [:D]
