Andav -> RE: Doomed I say! Doomed! Andav and InHarmsway (J) v witpqs and aprezto(A) (7/22/2011 3:39:22 PM)

Nov 24th, 1942 -- Today was pretty slow with the only real action taking place in the skies over Finschhafen and Burma.

Over Finschhafen, a mix of 90 IJA and IJN fighters met over 100 various types of 4Es in several waves. An initial sweep of P-38s was not very effective. The trailing sweep of 9 P-38s were let to wonder what all the smoke was about. We downed a few 4Es and they shot down a few of ours and destroyed some on the ground. Runway damage was 68 after two days of attacks. Usually they try for about 3 days and then give up.

We continue to pound PM to keep it suppressed.

On the ground, Tassafaronga finally fell to the IJA. The Allies had been running a constant string of subs into the base pulling out pieces. These units will be back but hopefully not for many months.

Japanese ground losses:
200 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 14 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 25 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
5026 casualties reported
Squads: 335 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 600 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 9 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 142 (142 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 117 (117 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 11

Defending units:
87th Mountain Regiment
637th TD Bn /1
14th NZ Brigade
641st Towed TD Bn /1
II US Fighter Cmnd /1
205th Field Artillery Battalion
1st USMC EAB /2
1/198th Coast AA Bn /1
198th Field Artillery Battalion
101st USN Base Force
183rd FA Rgt /1

Close up of Burma. Right now the Allies have two rather large armies on the move in Burma. One is headed down the trails from Akyab and one coming from Myitkyina via Katha where we had a rather larger battle. I am moving some infantry to cover Meiktila. My shuffle did not happen exactly as planned. I think I am in big trouble here. Our game is old so I think supplies will move over the jungle without a lot of issues.
Prome has 245 AV behind 2 forts. Forts should reach 3 before the Allies arrive. I think the Allies are bringing probably 1K Assault. I will try to cut their supply line on the trail.

In the north, they have about 30K troops. It only shows 4800 but there are a LOT more. Bombers are the biggest pain right now. Getting my main army out of the open ground hex is going to be a challenge. The good news is it is one hex closer to my air bases and one hex further from their bases.

I currently have 21st Division in route plus two more regiments. I think I will need to send more but I hate to weaken the other areas (Sumatra, Java, Timor, etc.) and we are short PPs right now.

Edit: To add a fewe more details.

Andav -> RE: Doomed I say! Doomed! Andav and InHarmsway (J) v witpqs and aprezto(A) (7/25/2011 11:06:28 PM)

Nov 26th was a repeat of the 24th with air battles mainly over Burma and Finschhafen .

Finschhafen is now closed but I am not sure how long they will be able to keep it closed. The bad news is PM is open again it appears. I suspect supplies are an issue but the presence of Allied air in the hex is rather ominous. Harmasaki tells me KB is scheduling a visit along with a bombardment TF (you can see it formed at Shortlands).

Over Burma, I have been LRCPing my retreating forces. My Tojos gave a decent account for themselves by shooting down 7 planes while only losing 2 but the bombers kept coming in wave after wave. In all, I suffered 1250 causalities. Granted most were disruptions but still. This will go on for many more days I am afraid. The good news is the allied army does not appear to be giving pursuit. They probably fear moving over this open ground without CAP as much as I do. I will put the airframes I have in the air again and hope for the best. I have repositioned some bombers and fighters up from the DEI. These have fairly decent pilots flying mostly Tojos so I hop for better results.

Here is the ugliness in Burma … That big stack matching is going to be trouble. I have 21st Division just north of Singapore which should help stiffen the defenses.

InHarmsWay -> RE: Doomed I say! Doomed! Andav and InHarmsway (J) v witpqs and aprezto(A) (7/30/2011 6:56:40 PM)

I took a gamble and sent my surface TF (2 BBs, 2 CAs, and misc DDs) that was to the east of PM in for a fast bombardment run. I am a bit worried about an ambush with the remaining US carriers (or even a surface group) as the KB is still a few days away. Hopefully this will work one more time and we can catch more US planes on the airfield before it gets fully repaired. I do worry as both Aprezto and witpqs are very cagey opponents. This is probably the last time I will run them in without air cover. The longer term goal is to try and keep the allies bottled up at PM as I don't think there is a chance we can retake the base, even with our temporary CV advantage given the proximity to all the allied LBA. In addition, I want to keep as much of the IJA and IJN capability to slow the allies in 43 and 44.

Andav -> RE: Doomed I say! Doomed! Andav and InHarmsway (J) v witpqs and aprezto(A) (8/1/2011 5:01:35 PM)

Nov 27th, 1942

Harmasaki's bombardment was a major disappointment. It merely disturbed the sleep of some Aussie infantry (probably just pissing them off). No damage to the airfield as hoped despite recon and spotter planes. Bummer ...

The good news is sweeps over PM met no resistance. While we did not close the airfield down, we did chase the planes away so that is a win. The other good news is it appears they will get away unharmed.

In Burma, parts of my army "Advancing to the Rear" have made it to the base North of Mandalay. They are boarding trains for points in the south where they can rest before facing the steam roller heading down the coast.

All other areas are quiet. 33rd Div is loading in Darwin and heading to Timor to replace the 21st Div which is heading to Burma. 21st should arrive in Rangoon in about 2 days. 33rd should make it to Timor in a week. This is the first major unit to leave Northern Oz. I think it is time.

Edit: Fixed spelling and such ...

Much of the same to tell the truth. Burma has been quiet which is nice. It has given my troops a chance to move unmolested. They are still very carefully moving in Combat mode but not being bombed makes them very happy.

Finschhafen is bombed again but the number of bombers is way down. We should be able to fly CAP there the next turn I think. Here is a look at the area around Finschhafen and PM. Boat load of Allied subs looking for a chance to take a shot at KB. Harmasaki should have it in position to hit PM tomorrow I think. it is located to the south east.

Here are the Allied ships sunk as of Nov 28th. The CVs are very nice. 5 BBs at Peal. Not much else really. There is a real lack of Allied CAs on this list.

Edit: Maybe there is not a "real lack" of CAs just not as many as hoped.

Japanese ships lost as of Nov 28th. All the Japanese CAs really hurt. Most of those were my fault along with Junyo. Mini KB was Harmasaki's fault. Only 1 BB down but we lost that taking down Hornet and Enterprise. Hornet we know sunk. Enterprise I still have my doubts.

Andav -> RE: Doomed I say! Doomed! Andav and InHarmsway (J) v witpqs and aprezto(A) (8/11/2011 10:08:47 PM)

Dec 1st, 1942

It has been a couple of days since I last updated the AAR. I just could not fit the time in to do an addition.

Lots of action in the South Pacific. The last two days have seen the Japanese trying desperately to close PM while the Allies continue to try to keep Finschhafen closed. KB is now on the scene. They have flown strikes the last two days against PM and shipping trying to off load units. The allies have a SCT with a mix of CAs and CLs covering the ships off loading at PM. A strike of 72 Kates could not damage any of them. Fatigue is a major issue I think. The Kate groups took a beating from flak and CAP today.

KB has also been trying very hard to dodge all the Allied subs. On the 29th, the Harmasaki had an “Oh crap!” moment when SS Stingray lined up a shot on Kaga. The torpedo failed to detonate much to our relief and the chagrin of the Allied commanders. CA Aoba dodged fish today along with another DD and SC. A PB was not so lucky but that was a Dutch sub near Rangoon.

Andav -> RE: Doomed I say! Doomed! Andav and InHarmsway (J) v witpqs and aprezto(A) (8/11/2011 10:10:16 PM)

Dec 1st, 1942

In Burma, my hopes of cutting off the tail on the units advancing down the coast were dashed when three additional units appeared strung out along the trail. I will move one hex further north to check those hexes. I would think supplying that number of units down a jungle trail would be very tough. 21st Division will move to Prome in a few days from Rangoon. They are still “Packing”. That will certainly stiffen the defense but it represents a weakening else where.

Northern Oz is slowly being abandoned. If I hold Darwin on Jan 1st, 1943, I will be pretty satisfied.
