Runesil -> Unable to Launch game (5/6/2011 3:52:38 AM)

Hi all,

I'm unable to even start DW-RotS. As soon as I do I get a windows fatal error, with the details below in it.
I'm running Win7 64-bit. I think it was working before I updated to ver 1.5.0.8 ... but I can't remember having it work even once since upgrading. Any ideas?

Hi Runesil and welcome to the forum,

It's important to be sure it worked before applying the patch, are you positive on that? It may avoid a complete reinstall.

Runesil -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/6/2011 11:43:49 PM)

I know it worked, as I played it quite a lot. I stopped for a bit, and at some point I applied the patch.
I think I never played it since I applied the patch though...

have you applied a theme?

or changed something? a file?

if it ran before it should now, but if you modded something it wont work if the file is not there

Runesil -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/7/2011 1:06:37 AM)

Nope, no mods. As far as I know all I did was download the patch through the launcher.

I'll uninstall it and then reinstall. Probably the easiest thing to do. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Fingers crossed. I don't recall ever hearing of a patch causing problems when the game ran ok; I wonder if you've got a chance to start the game after the pause but before applying the patch. The game itself could have had a problem. In which case reinstalling is still the best way to go.

Runesil -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/7/2011 8:00:04 AM)

Same problem after a reinstall. I completely uninstalled, then installed the normal DW. Updated to the latest ver 1.0.7.0, and then installed Return of the Shakturi.
I then checked for another update, but there was non available. When I try to launch the game now, I get the fatal error almost the same as before.

It's interesting that Problem Signature 2 looks like it would be the version of RotS ... but now it's showing 1.5.0.0, when before it was 1.5.0.8.

Did I do something in the wrong order while reinstalling? Maybe I should install RotS and then check for updates?

Yes, afaik you don't need to patch DW before ROTS...so install DW, ROTS and then update.

Runesil -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/7/2011 12:36:05 PM)

Okay I'll uninstall and try it again in that order.

When you uninstall make sure than in your profile under documents and settings there is no game data left - search for code force for example. It's important before you begin the new install to delete that folder. Mine is here -> D:\Documents and Settings\DBA\Application Data\Code Force Limited\...

Runesil -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/7/2011 1:30:07 PM)

No luck. Same problem. Guess I'll start looking into other things being the problem.

System.Windows.Forms? hmm, one thing I can think of and is a known problem is the .NET. Do you have only the version required by the game installed? Having multiple .NET versions has caused some install problems in the past.
Also, did you reboot after uninstall? Windows needs this to make sure it re-reads the registry.

Runesil -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/18/2011 12:11:22 AM)

When you started mentioning .NET framework, I had a thought. I think I upgraded to Win7 SP1, which seems to include .NET 3.5.1 updates. Could that have anything to do with it?
.NET doesn't seem to be anything which can be uninstalled on Win7 ... and I'm not sure how to go about repairing it.

I ran "sfc /scannow" which is supposed to detect problems, which found hundreds of "corrupted" files that it was unable to recover.
Not sure what I'll do about that yet, but I'll check into it.

Until then, what happens if you try to start DW in compatibility mode? let's say for xp sp2.
Good luck, Rune

Here's the post from the tech forums stickied troubleshooting faq. It post links to make a dotnet reinstall.

I guess it's worth a try.

I presume dotnet is listed under the installed windows updates of the Windows update page. Here you can see what is installed. Of course only advanced users should mess around here.

Runesil -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/18/2011 12:07:53 PM)

I'm not even sure where all of the errors I saw were, or if they're contributing or not. I tried to run in Compatability mode, but it didn't make any difference.

When I installed Win7 it was an "Upgrade" from XP ... which as far as I can see was just a fresh install that never deleted all the old crap from XP. Useful to have all the old files/documents around sometimes, but I suspect it left a lot of crap out there.

I'm going to do a full Format/Install of Win7 so I'm sure that I've got a completely clean system. Hopefully that works =)

I wouldnt if I was you.

You will be Windows updating and rebooting for a few hours...

Data -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/18/2011 6:56:33 PM)

That still beats a messy upgrade. I played once with the idea of making an image once I got everything right; then, if I'd needed, I would just restore that image.
But it's feasible only when you anticipate several reinstalls....which I hope you'll not need [:)]

Runesil -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/18/2011 9:36:46 PM)

Yeah. I sort of did that with a Norton Ghost image ... but then Norton screwed up to such an extent that I just got rid of it.
So I'm back to a clean/fresh install with a lot of installations ahead of me! lol.

It's okay, I enjoy playing with the computer .... even if i can't really play!

Data -> RE: Unable to Launch game (5/18/2011 9:45:21 PM)

I know the feeling [:)]
....but I still don't want this feeling at night when I hope I'm finally done only do discover there's more to install and configure. But enough of cheering you up, hope you get past it safe and sound [:)]
