Bunker22 -> Afrika Korps - need rules (10/1/2002 8:52:18 PM)

I need the rules for the Afrika Korps board game. Can anyone help me out on this ?

Thanks in advance.

Jim1954 -> (10/1/2002 9:19:31 PM)

I have them at home. Are you needind a complete copy or just a question on a specific item?

Bunker22 -> (10/1/2002 9:27:17 PM)

Complete copy would be great, as I currently have nothing.

Bunker22 -> (10/1/2002 9:28:16 PM)

By the way....

Is it a good game ?

Jim1954 -> (10/1/2002 9:28:29 PM)

Send me your mailing address via private message and I'll send you a copy.

Jim1954 -> (10/1/2002 9:30:58 PM)

The game is quite a bit dated, this is the one that Avalon Hill put out correct? If so there are others out there that are better. This one is very simple.

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (10/1/2002 11:58:51 PM)

Sorry to intrude, but while I think Africa Korps is a great game (you WILL like playing it), I feel obliged to tell you to see if you can find a copy of Columbia Games wooden block game called Rommel in the Desert.

It is by far the ultimate experience.

Easy to learn, easy to set up, and just like the war in the desert, in a way no other wargame has ever captured in my opinion.

Jim1954 -> (10/2/2002 12:02:18 AM)

You are not intruding. I happen to like the simplicity of Afrika Korps as well. Pointed him towards Boulder, maybe they have it.

This is the link to Columbia Games

http://www.columbiagames.com/index2.html

Alas Rommel in the Desert will be like a lot of old classic games, something that the collector in you will have to ferret out.

But it is worth the search.

It would be possible, that you might find it on eBay. Then again, it might require more searching.

I hope the Columbia Games link gives you a good jumping off point though.

If in a worst case scenario you come up totally empty, I have a copy I could provide image scans of. The manual is brief, map is basic, and counter quantity is not to extensive. But that is of course at best a limited solution.

The game is at this point in time not in circulation though.

David Heath -> (10/2/2002 8:35:21 AM)

Hi Guys

Let me jump in and say the the Rommel in the Desert and all the World War II block games are just great.

David

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (10/2/2002 9:05:06 AM)

Hmmm a fan eh David.

I have the Victory sets, plus the "Front" sets minus The Volga one and the one that unifies the others.

I haven't had a chance to get the Napoloenics or the Civil War offerings, but I can imagine they would be excellent too.

Names, give names....
Is there an East front block game ? You are talking about the Volga...what game is this commentary related to ?

Jim1954 -> (10/2/2002 7:22:56 PM)

I have those AK rules with me. Give me an address where I can send them. Are you local to Dallas?

Jim1954 -> (10/2/2002 7:24:01 PM)

never mind, I just confused you with someone else. Last time I looked at a map Rio was still in South America. Too early in the morning for coherrent thought.

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (10/2/2002 8:04:17 PM)

Bunker this link will take you straight to the home of all those fine wooden block games (where they are still actively sold too).

http://www.columbiagames.com/index2.html

But to answer directly...

I have East front, then got Western Front, which led me to get Mediteranean Front, there is a Volga Front (I don't have it yet, its a smaller item intended to predictably extend East Front). They also have a module that will unify them all as well (I don't have either).

I will warn you though, these games command full normal board game price. They are top drawer games, and they are superbly made. But when you add the total cost, well, lets say, there isn't a computer game on the market that even deserves the term "to expensive".

When I hear people whine "60 bucks is to much for Combat Leader" I want to yell ohhh shut the %#&#&#$# up you spoiled ****!!.

The games feature very colourful maps with large over sized hexes (hey those wooden block have to go somewhere). The blocks are about a 5/8 inch square sticker applied to a coloured wooden block (coloured to nation). Average game has a small bag of counters per side.

The games use forces that are representative of Army or Corps level units (because 10k wooden blocks would not amuse anyone fast hehe).

But if you look at the web page I mentioned here, you will get all the details you can handle. and the site is just for the company, so it is easy to navigate, and not fully of unrelated clutter.

Bunker22 -> (10/2/2002 8:19:44 PM)

Very nice.

So, If I buy East front, Western front, Violga front, Meditteranean and Afrika korps I should be able to mend them all into a, lets say "Big game"?

And there is also the EuroFront and the EuroMaster Front !

Well...expensive ? I say that $35,00 each is not that expensive. And as you guys are saying, these are supposed to be fantastic games. I will go for them all.

Taking advantage of the attention that this topic received, I would like to ask another question....

What about computer games.....simulations, like hex oriented, large campaigns (Like Siege of Jerusalem)...? Where can I find and which one is the best to play. Where can I find players to play against in a long campaign, even if it takes a month to finish ? Like a Barbarrossa Campaign or Third Reich ?

Jim1954 -> (10/2/2002 9:01:24 PM)

Look at that link that I sent you to Russo-German War 41-44. It is one of the best Barbarossa and beyond Eastern Front Games I have found and it looks, feels and plays just like a board game. It even has a card stock Reference card that reminds you of the old wargames. Still looking for that address via private email.:D

Bunker22 -> (10/2/2002 9:33:24 PM)

Well, I sent the private message last night. hmmmm

anyways...

here it is : cat23games@hotmail.com

Let me see that link :)

Dang ! Where is the link ? can you post it again ?

Jim1954 -> (10/2/2002 9:39:06 PM)

I looked in my private mail and didn't see anything since your original reply. hmmm....

Any here's the link:

http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/index.htm

send your address to me at

jholland@ndbt.com

Bunker22 -> (10/2/2002 10:07:45 PM)

I heard the Operational art of war series is also very good...
Just purchased the Russo-German. Hope we can play it.

What about ToaW ?

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (10/2/2002 10:13:24 PM)

Bunker this link is amusingly just a few threads from this one hehe (but you miiiiight not have read it through heheh).

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26322

Follow through the thread and it will lead you to free copies of perfectly playable wargames.
They are not new, some have been a round a while. New is not automatically better.

I personally advise getting Panzer General and Allied General above the rest, the reason being they are the most "playable".
People's General though gets a nod as well.
Fantasy General and Star General may not appeal to youif you are looking for specifically "wargames".

For Allied General, do not miss getting the Wing32.dll file (or Allied General will NOT run...unless you actually ARE running Win 95 still). That file though must be placed in a specific folder of Windows (not in the game directory).

Some other meritorious links would be

http://bouldergames.com/

They have a ton of games, but their web site sucks on a web site level.

http://www.wargamer.com/

They don't make games, but if you have not been here you have missed a great site (Wargamer has cash problems, but they are still a good site to visit).

http://www.wargamer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

That is the forum link at Wargamer and is a fine spot for discussions (I go here a lot to see if anything new has shown up).

http://www.wargamer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

This is specifically their Board game forum (you won't find to many decent forums for board games routinely).

http://www.wargamer.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=34

Alas the forums at Wargamer some days look like they neeeeeever move.
Although the General Forum is routinely active.

These people often have titles you would swear were no longer on sale aaaaaanywhere. They are an unknown to me though, I only now they are out there at this time.

http://www.secondchancegames.com/

Got this link thanks to Wild Bill (if he likes it you will too hehe). Lots of useful links to be found.

http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/Links/links.html

These people actually sell original retail copies of the games you can sometimes find as free downloads.
So if you want the real thing, look here.
I got a copy of Steel Panthers 2 Modern Battles from them plus the Campaign cd,and it was the orignal article, not a repackaged item. I have the original box, manual etc. (sometimes a person just wants the real thing).

http://www.cdaccess.com/index.htm

Avalanche Press is making current new wargames, some are nice looking (I don't own any yet).

http://www.avalanchepress.com/line_Panzer.php

Here is the link to the thread (you also might have seen this one) with people discussing Panzergrenadier in Matrix forum members own views.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25342

Last link for now look here at Strategic Command. A nice looking game (make sure you get the 1.04 demo version though).

http://www.battlefront.com/index.htm

The only software not yet mentioned is the Operational Art of War software from Talonsoft. I think you would be looking for the title called Century of Warfare (which is the item that has all the previous titles unified into a single purchase).

You now have the pick of the litter for all of Sarges best bookmarked links heheh. I hope they give you a good days worth of browsing:D

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (10/2/2002 10:17:21 PM)

Oops should include this link.

http://www.theblitz.org/index.php

They have a handful of demos of games that are not often findable as demos.

Including Operational Art of War

Bunker22 -> (10/2/2002 10:18:14 PM)

Mind if I call you God ?

Jim1954 -> (10/2/2002 10:21:30 PM)

Carlos, when you get RGW-41-44 ,make sure that you download all 5 patches from Schwehrpunct (yes I know the bane of the computer age) and install them sequentially, 1.1, 1.2 etc. There have been significant improvements to the game via these.

Bunker22 -> (10/2/2002 10:28:07 PM)

Does it work on Win XP ?

Can I count on you as a possible long term foe ?

Jim1954 -> (10/2/2002 10:33:38 PM)

I am not sure about XP as I am using ME. I know it was designed with as low of a sophisticated computer system as they could to reach as many people as possible. Email them at Schwehrpunkt and ask.

I would be agreeable to a battle, but I don't think I could handle the 176 turn campaign. Christ we'd die of old age before we could complete it with the multiple phases. I know in the patches they fixed it so you can vary the turn sequence to eliminate some of the time problem. Good man that Ron Dockal. I'm doing well to get in 1 turn a night against the AI. Not enough spare time it seems.

Bunker22 -> (10/2/2002 10:42:12 PM)

Long games are the best, as you can really develop a grand scale strategy that sometimes take a long time to work, but when they work......

It gives long time planners an edge. I dont mind playing a game that may last 6 months or a year...

I already played Siege of Jerusalem, the entire, full campaign, took like 3 months...

With the PC will be something like a turn each 2 or 3 days...no hurry :)

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> (10/2/2002 10:47:23 PM)

I hope that god comment wasn't directed at me heheh.

My wife informs me she is God heheh:D

Bunker22 -> (10/11/2002 8:22:42 PM)

Jim, just to let you know, I just received the rules you sent.

Thanks for this "so hard to find" kindness.
I cant say nothing else to express how impressed I am with your goodness.

Thanks a lot. That was really cool.

If anyone wants to know what I am tallking about, I asked the Afrika Korps avallon hill game rules, and Jim 1954 sent it right away by mail to me. And I live in Brazil.
Thats sure a nice example to follow !!!

Thanks Jim :D
