Pawlock -> Crimea (5/8/2011 10:43:13 PM)

What are the advantages/disadvantages to holding or attacking this area?

People seem to put a lot of stock in defending it, yet since it has no industry to speak of, or great hordes of manpower Im wondering whats the point of investing time in it.

I try and take it because it will end up far in my rear. Sure it can be defended at the narrows, but short of all three of the mountain divisions, that can be pushed back and suddenly there can be a army or two inside the Dnepr Bend.

Beyond this, an aggressive move into the Crimea and on to the Kuban can hold in winter - it is in the European zone, so while the blizzard hits here too, and the CV reductions happen, it is less severe in length of time. Having most of the 11th Army in the Kuban in spring of 1942 can prove an interesting distraction.

Lastly, taking it keeps the Soviets from bombing Ploesti.

Soviets can also bomb the romanian oil fields from the Crimea if i'm not mistaken, not sure about the impact of that in the long run...

It's easier to defend the chokepoint at Kerch, than it is the chokepoints at the top of the Crimea, particularly when Blizzard hits and all the water freezes.

It's worth some effort, though I wouldn't devote so much that you fail to take Leningrad or something like that. It's not THAT important.

Probably more the case of what your opponent wants you to do. Unless you really commit to taking the Crimea, most Sov players can make it damn near impossible. One possible strategy -- ignore it, but plan from turn 1 how to capture it and secure it (Fort 4s + mountain troops but 1.04 version might make it posssible to hold with infantry). Then in 1942 put everything into capturing the Eastern Black sea ports. Hey presto. Whatever is in Crimea is out of supply :).

ComradeP -> RE: Crimea (5/9/2011 8:24:08 PM)

With Sevastopol and the other ports in Soviet hands, the Black Sea Fleet can drop large numbers of forces in the Axis rear area, possibly supported by airborne brigades.

Currently, with the port ZOC not working for captured ports, as documented, the Black Sea Fleet is a bit too awesome even with both Sevastopol and Novorossiysk in Axis hands (you can still drop units in Ochakov, the port east of Odessa, from a dot hex in the Caucasus I believe), but when that is tweaked, allowing them to maintain control over Sevastopol is a bad idea.

OK my 2 cents. Just get past the land bridges in 41 an hold out. In 42 press the Soviets hard elsewhere and its yours. You need a moble division to do so...
