Local Yokel -> The island that cannot be invaded (5/15/2011 2:00:03 AM)

Been doing a clean up of the islands south of Sulawesi and overlooked Pulau Kalao, so I set up a couple of Daihatsus + escort/mother ship to take the island. The shot below is the message I got, telling me I can neither load nor unload at this island 'due to coastal conditions.'

But there's a town on this island, dammit, and all I want to do is beach a couple of landing craft to take it! What's so special about Kalao that I'm unable to do so?

Incidentally, I find that the plethora of added bases in AE makes it a real headache to take every base and base site in the Indies. How do other people go about it?

There are bases only to be reached by land because of cliffs and rocks (think Norway).

Interesting predicament. I can only pose a possible alternative, but don't know if it will work. Your travel hexes may be compromising the message, can you load your daihatsu / mother ship TF and sail to the hex immediately West of Pulao Kalao and THEN select the islette as your destination? Might that work?

As far as invading the plethora of added AE bases-yes, it is a headache, isn't it. For many it takes the better part of a year consolidating with SNLF and 'bitsa' IJA units in mini-invasions. I would recommend prioritizing those with adjacent dot hexes that also need to be taken, with the hope that those would be 'liberated' by proxy as well.

"Proxy" meaning the canoe regiments. [:D]

It might be the ship type or the TF type. Maybe the TF type is "Barge" and needs to be "Landing Craft". Maybe the type of ships you have in the TF (I am not familiar with them) are not capable of amphibious landing.

Yes, that's worth a shot. By that stage the Daihatsu's will be running on fumes and require a top-up anyway.

I'm at mid-February 1942, and have tidied up N. Australia, the Moluccas and Lesser Sundas, and the whole of N. Guinea and the Solomons. But I bypassed Mindanao and the central Philippine archipelago, so there's still a shedload of landings to be done, with less than six weeks amphibious bonus remaining. [X(]

A cluster of 2 or 3 Daihatsu TF's are fine where the island bases are densely grouped, but once you start going into the boonies at places like Groote Eylandte you really need the reach of a destroyer rat transport.

That hits the spot - almost. The type of TF that produced this message was 'Landing Craft'. I reformed it into a 'Barge' TF, and now it looks as though it will unload at the target OK. Looking at the commentary in the Manual, you'd think a LC TF was more appropriate, but apparently not...

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions; looks like I shall be able to seize this pivotal strategic location after all.

The Outrigger Company? [:D]

There is a "no amphib possible" attribute for a hex. It means that terrain or surf or something will prevent amphib ops at that location.

You could use parachute operations or just leave it. Undefended locations will usually switch over.

Don -

That level of detailing is absolutely awesome - no matter how long one has played or studied the rules and forums, there are hundreds of facets yet to be learned - my hat is off to the Team.

Local Yokel - good questions and thread.

My Thanks to you all, Gents.

World Conqueror wanna be, Mac

I would seriously not worry about occupying every little base. Just occupy the important ones and/or ones with enemy defenders on it. There really is no need to occupy most dot hexes.

But, but... they're GREEN! They NEED to be RED!

Sigh, being OCD is a blessing and curse. [;)]
