jhowell -> Japanese Para Units (5/16/2011 8:48:56 PM)

Hi

Is there anyway I can spot which Japanese infantry units are parachute capable from the LCU's summary screen? How many do the Japanese have at the start of the game?

Regards

John

Hey thanks. Did you guys know that off the top of your heads or did you have to look it up?

Like the Midget sub carriers, those are specialty units you keep looking up and eventually you remember what they are.

Do you have any favourite spots to use them for paradrops in the opening month?

Smeulders -> RE: Japanese Para Units (5/17/2011 9:49:43 PM)

Port Blair seems to be a popular spot. Not heavily defended, important (air transfers between Burma and Sumatra) and not quickly or safely reached by ship in the opening weeks.

I think it shows '- Parachute' in top corner (3rd or 4th line down, the one showing the fortifications) of the unit display screen

I'd never noticed that but you're right. And the unit is composed of SNLF Para squads, instead of just SNLF squads. Still, these are not things you can see from the LCU summary screen.

I've also noticed that on the unit symbol on the bottom of the screen the para units have an extra squiggle - I suppose these are wings.

The Port Blair Naval det has an AV of 6, the SNLF have an AV of 23/24 so that would be an option. I'd only been looking at empty bases like on the north coast of the Philippines. I'll look around for the DEI small detachments that can be overwhelled in one hit.

Thanks.

John

Yup, unit symbols have extra wings, but not very visible.
You have 2 SNLF units at Formosa, and Army unit at western Japan.

They are good to catch empty bases, before you unload troops there. That way your landing troops are not disrupted, because they unload in already friendly port.

Also, once you catch base, if there is airfield there, you can quickly airtransport some light units. Useful against enemy rear.
Also, you can quickly station there fighter unit, for close CAP. Just send some Aviation Support by air.

And remember, that transports with Para unit, can be intercepted, and are susceptible to Flak.
