Welcome Larry!   Wite eh?  I've been hearing good things about that and am considering giving it a shot.

Welcome to AE! Basically I would jump into a PBEM game first thing as the AI won't be much fun. Start out with a small campaign like the Guadalcanal scenario or something. Just advertise in the "Opponents Wanted" forum that you are brand new to the game, looking for someone with a similar skill level.

If you want to dive right into a grand campaign you might try starting out with a team game. Maybe 2 x 2, definitely not more than 3 x 3. In a team game each individual can choose a particular piece of the map and concentrate on just that one area. At the same time it's a great way to make friends in the forum.

Sounds like a great deal of fun .......... so of course I gotta do it. Thanks for the idea(s).

Since you're already "Matrix Legion of Merit," what have you been playing up to this point?

I'm a playtester for TOAW and a FITE fanatic and have 4 PBEM games going of WITE and I'm retired and need something to occupy the spare time I seem to have a lot of. And yes, I'm a student of War and was at one time an ROTC student at the U. of Arizona back in 1968. I could ramble on for quite a few paragraphs about my life history but it'd be boring as hell except for maybe you folks that would like to hear from a veteran what Vietnam was like from November 1970 to August 1973.

Larry! Nice to see a fellow TOAW veteran in these parts!
I've been playing WitP-AE for a few months now and I must say it's very addictive, I am sure you will enjoy it, once you get the hang of it (which might take a while).

hi Larry,

i've only played as Allies vs. the Japanese AI, but here's my advice fwiw:

this is a strategic-level game, treat it as such! Once you get started on play, it's natural you might get focused on current combat ops, & neglect your rear-area forces. Don't fall into this trap, this game is a long chess-match.

Don't hit the 'play' button prematurely, that is, don't put off 'til tomorrow the things you need to do today:
a) train pilots! make your own schedule, and troll thru your rear-area groups for high-skill pilots (send them to the reserve pool, then access front-line groups & transfer the high-skill pilots. Similarly, send low-skill pilots from your front-line groups back to rear-area groups, where they can improve in training).
b) assign leaders! there's a thread here http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2350193 for tips on how to use your leaders most effectively.
c) assign LCU objectives, esp. for amph. assault units. It's useless to amph-assault a heavily-defended objective w/ LCUs that are less that 100% prepared - you must decide on objectives early in the game, since it'll take 70+ days for an LCU to reach 100% readiness.
d) make the best possible use of your support LCUs. You've got army, navy & air support, you've also got Engineer units that are essential to base repair & expansion.
e) and all your units need supplies, which must be delivered to your bases by adequately-defended trans or amph TFs.

best regards!

Larry -

Welcome to the AE forums, Sir!

Do hope that you get as much enjoyment out of AE as you have from TOAW and WitE.

Mac
