Stilletto -> TOAW 3 or Combat Command (6/3/2011 1:28:35 AM)

I'm looking to jump into a new WWII strategy game. I don't have any operational type of games at the moment so I don't even know where to start. I do have War in the Pacific, AE, which I enjoy tremendously, but I want to branch out and try some "land" based combat. I see that TOAW has been our for a long time and has many new updates, but Combat Command is the new kid on the block. Complexity doesn't scare me, nor am I worried about graphics. I want something interesting and fun (define that!).

Thank you for any suggestions.

I'm curious too. I don't remember playing those games and the reviews are pretty sparse on details.

I'd recommend also posting the same question on their forum to get a more balanced view (not that anyone here is unbalanced or anything[:D] )

Never played Combat Command. Don't like the way it looks. It might play great though, dunno. Totally different scale than TOAW. More in a league with the three Steel Panthers. (Which are all free BTW. But you didn't hear it from me.)

What I'd do is download the afore mentioned three games and buy TOAW and forget about having a life for awhile. [;)]

I have TOAW3 and bought Combat Command Matrix edition. Different scales and complextity. CC is smaller scale company sized infantry units, it also has a more simplified command and supply model. Combat Command is a good game and will be fun for PBEM games. I am still getting used to it and understanding its phases, so I am no authority. Combat Command will also appeal to those that want to be able to bang out a scenario in a casual evening of playing (though there are scenarios that will undoubtably take longer). I think Combat Command will actually appeal to those that enjoy TOAW and are not put off by the scale. I would say if you like more complex, large scenarios (you say you like WitP:AE) you will like TOAW...if you are looking for something a little simpler, smaller scale and quicker you will like Combat Command.

Ah. I think TOAW sounds more like what I want. How are naval and air units handled? Anyone know if there is a demo or some gameplay videos? Can troops move by ship/air?

Thanks!

You can check out the After Action Report section for reports of people playing it.

Naval is a weak part of the game, It's better in some scenarios, but probably best when one side has absolute superiority, in which case they're basically mobile gun platforms in 3.4. I think that Air is modeled fairly well, it's got inderdiction, superiority, and several other things pretty well modeled, but abstracted enough that you can automate it and the AI can play at some level. Troop movement by sea is done by 'Embarking' units if you have transport capacity. Air is the same, assuming that the unit can move by air. Their are two types of air troop movement, helicopter and parachute.

Now I've gone and done it. While trying to decide between TOAW 3 and Combat Command I saw in in Alby's signature something about a SP:WAW Enhancement. Hmmm. I've heard of something like that. Logged into the site and found it to be interesting. Downloaded the program from Matrix and applied the enhancement. Oh. My. Gosh. How could I have missed something like this?!? I'm afraid I won't be buying anything for the moment. This thing comes with 300 scenarios! I'm in gaming heaven.
