kirkgregerson -> Leader ability gains (6/7/2011 7:07:17 PM)

I'm still a bit lost as to the logic on which attributes have an opportunity to increase. My guess is it is somewhat random?

For example I had a Corps HQ leader gain +1 Mech, even though he's only EVER commanded infantry units. To me this seems to be a bit too 'dumb' as logic goes. Would it not make more sense have leaders gain abilities more focused on what units they are commanding when it comes to increases/decreases for MECH or INF ability?

Just some thoughts.

Expertise is a little talent and a *lot* of experience. The current estimate is that a real expert in some area has about 10,000+ hours (200-250 weeks, or 48-60 months) of challenging practice. See this article. In game terms, with a new boy about 50 and an expert at 90, you would expect +1 in skill per 4 weeks, and only in those skills practiced.

I dunno....Rommel, Mainstein, PanzerMeyer, De Gaulle, Patton and other crack Panzer commanders didn't have 5 years of practice to bone up on becoming a good Panzer commander. As far as I know, the only practical experience Rommel had as an armored commander before France was Poland.

Rommel was an extremely competent light infantry commander. Mech tactics were developed from light infantry tactics, even in the Panzerdivisionen. The WWII German Army had a range of divisions organised in about the same way, only some of which were mechanised.

My 2 cents,

If you get attacked enough by tanks, you will understand them quite a bit better, so I don't think gaining skill in mech instead of infantry is out of the question. As far as how good a commander is, some people get it, and others don't.....to start. If I were to put my game skills as a reference, I would say the day I picked up this game, my mech skills were about a 3, maybe a 2. I have had time to really play the heck out of the game and maybe I have come up to a 4 or 5. But that will still be lower than say, PyleDriver, who probably started at a 6 or 7.

And this is why Germany almost finished off France before they collapsed at the end of World War I. The concept of penetration and bypass was used in the last German offensive, but the 14 (I think it was 14) divisions that were trained in infiltration were bled out on the offensive, and the regular infantry just couldn't keep the attack going. The tactics were German, and the Allies came up with the tank, and it just so happens some young German named Heinz put the 2 together and brought it to fruition.

I think people have totally lost sight of what I was asking for in WitE. Just make the logic a bit 'smarter' about which combat ability a leader might gain between MECH and INF. Not going to do my inf corps leader any good to increase MECH from 3->4 and if he's successfully commanding inf div, he should be gaining exp/ability in that area.

Maybe he is taking correspondence courses? If he keeps it up, you might have a great panzer commander by 1948! [;)]
