Wikingus -> Using oilers (6/9/2011 7:48:55 PM)

Hey, I dusted off my copy of WITP:AE after too many months of not playing it, and I of course already have a question. [:)]

It's late December 1941 and I can't add any AOs to my CV taskforce. Am I doing something wrong or is underway replenishing activated at a certain date? I sort of half-remember maybe reading something about this somewhere on these forums, but I'm not certain.

Much appreciated.

CV TF is Combat TF and cannot contain non-combat ships. You need to put them into separate Replenishment TF.

Well there you go. I really need to play this game more often. Thank you very much! [:)]

If you really wanted to do it, for say convience far away from the front...

Make an Escort Task Force then you can combine any ships

But the CV's would be slowed by the AO's afterall, so its better to match ship speeds

And what exactly would be the point of that.

An Escort TF will not fight but try to avoid combat. Every Allied CV has sufficient endurance to transit from any decent sized port to another, so you don't need to incorporate AO's just to be able to refuel the CVs transiting from one port to another.

I don't see the benefit at all when putting them in the same taskforce as the CVs...

Even the fastest fleet oilers are only capable of 18kts, so putting them in your CV TF would severely hamper your combat operations.

How does the speed factor influence things when the AO is in a replenishment TF? Does it lag behind and catch up once the Air Combat TF stops or slows down? Is the underway replenishment done automatically once fuel drops below a certain level?

If the Repl TF is set to Follow the CV TF, the CV slows down to match speed w/ the AO, & the AO will catch up w/ the CV once the CV reaches its destination. If the Repl TF is set to Meet the CV TF, the CV reduces speed (but does not stop) to allow the AO to catch up more quickly, after meeting, they will proceed together at the speed of the slower TF (when doing this, set the CV to Cruise speed to reduce wear & tear). But don't use this Follow, Meet or Cruise Speed option if the CV is out looking for trouble, w/ the CV encumbered by the slower AO, you might get more trouble than you're looking for! On a combat mission, it's best to move them independently, w/ the AO well to the rear of the CV.

The CV won't auto-refuel from the AO unless the AO is set to Meet: Refuel OR the CV's fuel state is very low. You must use the CV's Refuel at Sea button.

and there's nothing wrong w/ a CVE living in the AO TF to give it some inherent CAP - LR search planes will achieve a hit every now & then, and they love to tag an unprotected AO or TK. This might happen only once or twice a year, but you'll not like it at all. If you've got a Replacement airgroup embarked on a CVE in the Repl TF, make sure the airgroup size isn't larger than the CVE's capacity, else no CAP will fly from it.
