cmdrsam -> 2 pbem questions (6/10/2011 5:13:22 AM)

A couple of quick questions on PBEM. My honorable opponent has sent me his file and I have been doing my part of the turn but two questions are creeping deep into my head.

1. He has sent me a file with a game save 6 pws file. I have seen that the pbem thread says it is to be the 5 pws file. Does it matter?

2. I have saved my file a couple of times as I go back and work on my turn some more. But during the load sequence it comes up as a not a pbem save do you wish to continue. Is this normal or have I been working on a bad file?

OK, first off you are obviously using the Beta version or you would not be getting that message. Michael put that message in their to help people catch when they mistakenly open up a file that was saved mid-turn, as opposed to being 'fresh' from their opponent. So if you save in the middle of a turn, quit, then load up the file you saved the next day (or whenever), that's when you should see the message.

As far as your first question goes, it does not matter which save# you use. You can even rename the file to another save number with no consequences.

BTW, many of us keep two save numbers for each each game. One is the save that we send to our opponent after "Ending" the turn. The other is an ordinary save just before ending the turn. You see, if there is some kind of bug and you need to change something, then you can go back to that 'just before ending' save and make the change without needing to re-enter all of your other orders. It also gives you a chance to look over the situation while your opponent is working on his turn. Another reason is that it is very useful to be able to look back to see how things were when you think a bug might have occurred.

Ok so if I am understanding you then all is fine then correct?

witpqs -> RE: 2 pbem questions (6/10/2011 6:09:50 AM)

Based upon what I understood you to describe, yes. Do things seem to you to be going smoothly?

cmdrsam -> RE: 2 pbem questions (6/10/2011 6:12:27 AM)

Yes. This is just my first pbem game and I have seen this a couple of times when I have reloaded it and doubt started to creap in. Thank you sir , you just took a load off of my mind. Thought I was going to have to restart all over again. Many thanks.

Here's a crazy idea to put your mind at ease. Using totally different save numbers of course, start a PBM with yourself, you playing both sides. Don't even bother to issue any orders, just start the game as Japan, save it for the Allies, you don't even then have to 'send' it of course because you already have it, open it as Allies and end the turn, take it back as Japan and run the turn.

You will see how things work without affecting your real game and you will gain confidence in the mechanical steps.

Highly recommend you do this, having the 'unfinished' save as well as a separate finished save (sent to opponent) has saved a game or two for me in the past when things have gone wrong on email exchanges.
