I played DW a small amount and got turned off by the IE/glactopedia bug. With the release of the 1.0.7 patch I thought I would check if it was fixed. It was not, but I still wanted to try the game again to see if it was as good as everyone says.

In starting over with it I thought I remembered one of the patches added a Race/Empire customization tool, a little like MOO2 custom races, with various options and trade offs for racial/empire abilities. I remember you had to edit these things and save the race then start a new game and select your saved race. I remember it was pretty but rather tedious.

Question 1
Does this really exist, or am I crazy? I have searched and can find no reference to it at all. I am starting to think i am going nuts.

Question 2
Assuming it did exist, Is it also in RoTS?

Hi LargePrime and welcome to the forum.
It may not be what you look for (being a mooniac also I know exactly what you mean) but in the editor you have a button down below called edit empires. There you can edit many things about each empire.
Other than this, there is also the races.txt file in the game folder.

All this stuff is in ROTS as well.

Thanks for the reply, and extra cookies for speediness.
I looked at the editor.  That was not what I remember.  I remember it was some sort of GUI interface trick think you did when you started a new game or under options.  You selected a race, then would start the editing process.  You went thru this long process step by step and at the end you saved the race/empire you made.  Then you went back to start a new game and you could select this saved race.

Perhaps I am crazy and it does not exist.

Are there any comprehensive tools to assist in the editing of these files?

Am I correct and there never was a fix for the Glactopedia not working for some people?

afaik there's nothing like this, there is a tool developed by one of us to make editing the races.txt easier. I'll post the thread here once I find it but aside from that I don't think we've got anything else.....and now you also got me questioning my sanity so I'll need more cookies for that.

Cookies, the very best anti-psychotic.  I have lots cause I need them.  I gives you a dozen...

So you don't remember a big patch that added race customization to the game?  Apparently the cookies are not enough, as I looked through all the patch release notes I could find and no mention of it.

By any chance are you refering to custom themes? They are for modding but you can setup your own races there and start the game with them so it's the closest thing to what you're describing.

It's not a tool per se, it's a folder in the game home where you can place your race customization files and other files and they'll appear as a theme in the ingame custom themes option. You'd get more accurate details from the big boys like Igard or Lordxorn or WoodMan if they spot this thread....or better yet check out the modding section on the forum to see the end result, Lordxorn has a compendium with most of the mods done so far.

Hi LargePrime. There was a really nice race customization tool by bubblewrap for the original release of DW. This could be what you're remembering. It had a nice GUI, so could have been confused as part of the game.

Sadly, it's not been updated for RotS.

EDIT: I've sent an email to him, asking if he can port it to ROTS.....this is gold.
I see that he also uploaded the sources for it in the thread so if any of us has the talent for it maybe he can do it. I'm a newbie at this but I'll play with it a little just for the fun of it.
