lujab2004 -> Beginner's Resources? (6/13/2011 1:38:38 AM)

Hi guys. WITE is my very first wargame. I have spent the last few days going through the Operational Bootcamp Tutorial. While I have already learned a TON just from that. I still feel like I am just flailing. I have tried a few "Road To" scenarios on easy and have not much success. Can anyone point me towards some articles/sites about general strategy. I understand basic encirclement but thats about it. What is a security div? What are each type of unit good/bad for. Whats the general "thought process". I already feel like this game has its hooks set in me but I need to start improving, or at least have some basic organization to my thoughts. Thanks in Advance.

Go here

http://www.witewiki.com/

It's down at the moment (not available), but check back often cos the owner has been told it's down.

WITE is quite complex for a first wargame to play maybe you should gain experience on something easier first.

Check out the AAR to see a plan of attack unfold.

Security divisions are used to garrison cities and to reduce partisans. But you will not get partisans early on with the Germans, so you can just neglect them at first. However you should check out the railroad repair units; there are those that do their thing automatically (you can't move them yourself), and there are four or five that have movement points. Those whould be used to fix your railroads towards the East, because the railheads are your supply sources and once you outrun them, the game becomes more difficult.

You can leave the air war on automatic without serious consequences, however at the start of each turn press the recon button then "a" to automatically do air recon. Then do the same with bombing airfields. Then send your Panzers forward and pocket as many Russians as you can. If you are playing on Easy, Soviet counterattacks by the AI are not dangerous early on, it is essentially a race to get as far as fast as possible. You can occasionally break down a Divisioninto its 3 components to help close a pocket, but I hardly ever do it early on.

There is a lot of useful advice on the Wiki and in the AARs. There is even a thread on the detailed German first move.

Any AAR in which JAMiAM is participating is highly instructive - his posts are wildly informative, very much like tutorials. Other AARs are a lot of fun to read as well as highly informative. I'd recommend just reading thru the more popular ARRs. Here's a link to what should be an epic and educational AAR involving JAMiAM and PDH:

Good luck. This game would make an interesting, involved first wargame.

Cheers!

I would advise you to get some books on the campaign. Erickson's "The Road to Stalingrad" and "The road to Berlin" are nice. For more detail on actual operations Try the very dry but informative Glantz. "Before Stalingrad" should give you a nice primer in what was tried historically, and how it worked out. Then you have a place to start in the game.

You might go read Bruce Geryks war gamers diary about WitE on quarter to three. It helped me grasp some of the finer points of the stratgedy and a few of the mechanics early on.
