Evil Steve -> DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/16/2011 5:54:37 AM)

I didn't see one, feel free to delete if another place:

THE NID

Forged in the heart of (high research) black holes, this solitary neutronium based arachnid forges a web out of gravity waves to trap matter before it blinks out of existance. Of enormous size and strength due to the twisting torque of high level gravity, the Nid has a stressed and short lifespan. Much of this lifespan in involved in sucking the core out of matter to create life: on its explosive death, the Nid propels its young into space, where they travel in stasis on gravity waves, themselves highly dense and gravitationally attactive to passing matter, matter on which they wake to feed until they reach their new home.

The adult Nid is highly dangerously, even to matter outside the wormhole. It has the inate ability to shoot out a gravity wave and pull in matter considered out of reach. The young Nids, still huge by any standard, are often lethal to passing ships and orbital structures, trapped as these ships are by the Nid's gravity field, and then consumed, on contact, by its awakened neutronium mandibles.

The Nid can only be killed by long range weapons.

THE NID! or should that be N'ID! ;)

I sense a D'ni survivor here? [:)]

J HG T -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/16/2011 7:16:46 AM)

A bit too early for entries, but what the heck if ideas are good.
I'm having kind of growing idea myself too. I'll wait for the Erik to announce the competition before I post the idea.

Anyway, nice idea Steve!

cookie monster -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/16/2011 4:26:15 PM)

I would like to see creatures like these.[:D]

Wow.....glad there's no water in space! (Don't get them wet!) [:)]

Data -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/16/2011 6:54:55 PM)

So we get the start on this or we steal the start? [:)]

Please don't feed them after midnight.[:'(]

Data -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/16/2011 8:23:34 PM)

In space it's always midnight....no one can hear us scream.....a lonely place full of lovingly creatures like these....who devour our insides....

Simulation01 -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 2:28:26 AM)

Them thar Gremlins would only be located in deep space because of......yep, BRIGHT LIGHT! BRIGHT LIGHT!

Seriously though.....   What about a creature that instead of physically destroying ships it attached itself to them and slowly drained them of all energy....killing the crew and leaving the ship floating in space in need of not only repairs, but a new crew????  These ships would also be able to be captured by your enemy's and destroyed by other monsters or enemy's.

This creature could be something that is made up of a swarm instead of one large beast.  Also, beam weapons wouldn't work....you'd have to have torpedo's or missiles to blast the swarm apart.

Data -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 8:18:59 AM)

me likes it, +1

AlPhi -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 11:14:47 AM)

Or the derelict ship could still have the creatures on board (Alien or Event Horizon style?). Whoever repairs and claims the 'abandoned' ship would find its energy/life support gradually eroding and unless they were vigilant and somehow 'sanitised' the ship it would again become a drifting hulk waiting to claim another victim.

That's a nice touch...I like it!

Shark7 -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 3:34:05 PM)

OK, I'll play too.

Leviathan:

The Leviathan is an ancient, deep space dwelling creature that is rarely found near a planetary system, instead preferring the cold darkness of deep space. The Leviathan is very much like an Earth Octopus or Squid with multiple tentacles that it can use to ensnare its prey. Leviathans are capable of hibernating for thousands of years before being awakened by minerals that come into its range either by comets, asteroids, ships or dust/gas clouds. The Leviathan has one special trait that makes it particularly deadly to lone, unarmed ships; the ability to generate a hyperspace inhibiting field.

Stats:

Armor: 500
Health: 100
Firepower: 200 at Range 1

Special Ability: Hyperspace Inhibitor Field.

Data -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 3:46:14 PM)

fuel or energy consuming creatures anyone? or better yet, caslon or hydrogen eating ones
energy absorbant so that beam weapons would not affect them; jamming capabilities for missiles or torps so that only close range fighters can take them on (targeting bonus against it for fighters only or a tech for this)

or a creature capable of destroying stars and everything in the star system implicitly

J HG T -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 4:16:27 PM)

We concur. The DW needs really terrifying and dangerous creatures that pose threat even to a well developed empires. Ancient creatures born in the infinite void of space, cabable of destroying entire fleets, systems and consume moons and planets for energy.

Currently the creatures are somewhere between nuisance and minor threat.

That's just my 2 credits. Creatures are big part of DW so it would be extremely interesting to make them really powerful and cabable of playing a bigger role in the grand galactic scale.

Something like this perhaps:

Qualle:

These are essentially very large space jellyfish that feed on Caslon, Hydrogen, Argon, or Helium gases. Qualle are extremely docile creatures that will usually be found around gas giants and or gas clouds slowly lazily floating and feeding on the gases within. The will attack when provoked, usually by expelling an acidic, jelly-like substance from their main body. Qualle are a danger to ships because they are attracted to the concentrated refined gases contained in a ship or stations fuel cells.

Stats:

Armor 100
Health 500
Firepower 50 out to range 50

Special Ability: Drains fuel from stations and ships.

Always found in large 'schools'.

Hence Leviathan example...it can of course be made even more terrifying by simply upping the stats.

J HG T -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 6:00:50 PM)

Great ideas, Shark7. No denying that. [:)]

I was going to write about my point more specifically, but then thought I'll post about my own "creature" when I get the idea finished.

Data -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 6:55:37 PM)

If Igard's creature farms idea catches on we can even weaponize some of them, use them as we currently use pirates to attack others.

Webbco -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 7:22:57 PM)

I think to have very rare creatures (not included in galactopedia, maybe) guarding certain areas that contain rare artifacts etc might be a great way to add to the exploration aspect of DW.

ASHBERY76 -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/17/2011 8:14:09 PM)

Star-spawn

late game supermonster that eats planet populations and looks something like this.

Igard -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/18/2011 3:07:04 AM)

Nice one, Ash. Looks like Cuthulhu. I'd be very happy if we just got some supermonsters like this, but only as 'events'.

@Shark7. I'm glad you posted an idea for docile/passive creatures. I was trying to think of a way to suggest them that didn't sound lame, and you came up with a great idea.

@Data. What do you mean, 'if' my creature farm idea gets implemented? How could such a game altering, nay, life altering experience be passed up?

Just to fill people in on the space creature farm idea. You'd basically be able to 'round up' creatures at a new space port type. There may be different types of these new structures. One would be a military research facility, providing new tech for weapons (eventually resulting in trained space creatures (sharks with frickin' laser beams?)). Another an agriculture facility, which would give you a boost to population growth/cap etc. A safari facility, where your ships can go and train by hunting the creatures (this would be for agressive races). A zoo facility, much like a resort base, that boosts happiness and your revenues (this would be for passive races).

Hehe, I have pulse lasers, turbo lasers and a couple of heavy Ion Cannons for good measure. No over-sights here. [sm=00000622.gif]

My command ship is an Executor Class Star Destroyer, 'nuff said. [;)]

J HG T -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/18/2011 10:07:56 AM)

I'ä! I'ä! Cthulhu fhtagn.

K! Here's my idea for middle-/Late-game space "monster":

"Tech eradicator"

Weapons:
- Eradicator gun: Destroys ships by annihilating their components one by one. No hull damage is caused. The ship becomes componentless hulk when the last component is destroyed. Can be repaired but it's expensive.
- Eradicator "melee": The eradicators can physically rip ships apart as well 'cause of their transforming form.
- Bombing: The eradicators destroy planets by using massive projectiles fired at relativistic speeds. Similar to massive rail guns. The projectiles themselves seem to grow out of Eradicators themselves and there is no visible weapon components. The eradicators use massive energy fields to accelerate the projects to their final, crust breking speeds.

Special ability:
Distruptor fields: When an Eradicator, or group of them, appears in a star system they generate powerful field of energy that distrupts communications and research. The research output, credits income and possible bonuses from governors/spies of the system are nullifed. Transports and other civilian ships evacuate the system. Military ships act normal and fleet commanders bonuses apply to their fleet.
There's also possibility that fleets without commanders would get penalties to their stats and fighting capabilities when near Eradicators. Fleet commanders would allow the fleets act as normal when fighting Eradicators.

Bit of backstory:
These mysterious beings appear when civilizations technology advances past certain, undefined mark. Their physical form is a mix of swirling energy and mass of black cubes and pyramids of different sizes. The cubes and pyramids are made of unknown materials as no sensors can penetrate their surface, and upon destruction they just vanish into nothingness.

Upon appearing these "creatures" target concentrations of high-technology and attempt to wipe them out. Destroying ships with weapons of unknown origin that eat the ships and stations piece by piece, ignoring shields and armor. Or just simply by ripping the ships apart with their twisting, formless bodies. Annihilating colonies with projectiles fired in incredible velocities, capable to penetrating the crust of any planet.

They seem to be driven by some kind of intelligence, but their motives remain mystery as no living being has been able to communicate with them. They are ruthless, methodical and efficient. They only stop when they have reduced the technology level of targeted civilization below certain level, or when they are destroyed. Which is not easy task, I might add.
If they are succesful in their attack there's a possibility that they continue their rampage, targeting other advanced empires.
After their grim job is done, or they are annihilated, they disappear to empty void from where they came from.

Yep, there's certain references if you know them. Feel free to comment.

me likes the entire package but this part is brilliant for late game
it makes me think of some monsters and even the antarans from MOO2....but what doesn't make me think of that? [:)]

Starfry -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/18/2011 12:28:35 PM)

The space toilet.

"Upon entering the ship, we discovered that the ship has been desserted yet all of the escape pods or any shuttles are present. Reviewing the captian's logs, his last entry indicates that he conducted a salvage operation on an alien ship at coordiantes *.* and has discovered a new delicacy on that ship which he planned to sell for a tidy profit. As of this writing, we discovered two things as we searched the ship, an ancient device which our head researcher has suspected to be a well-armored lavatory and the discovery of a new delicacy in the mess hall which the crew is happily feasting on."

Last entry of a derelict surveyuor ship.

tjhkkr -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/27/2011 10:44:56 PM)

I have never been much of a creature sort of player... I find them a total pain...
But one that might be kind of neat is like the old Star Trek planet destoyer whose hull is made out of solid neutronium... and maybe have this creature be able to ally with a totally mechnoid race.
You might even try that with say a space bug of some kind that can ally with a hive mind space insect race.

Kayoz -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/28/2011 5:34:49 AM)

Seems premature to be making suggestions, when we have no idea what the available parameters are.

J HG T -> RE: DW: Creature Competition Thread (6/28/2011 7:38:45 AM)

I don't see a problem; When the competition kicks in, and we know the parameters, we just adjust our ideas if necessary.
