Hi all, quote:
ORIGINAL: Shark7 Wonder how many of you know about Project Habakkuk? In 1942 the British actually looked into building an aircraft carrier of immense proportions whose hull would be made of ice...that is Pykrete to be exact. Pykrete for those that don't know is simply Ice made with a percentage of sawdust in the water before it is frozen. Once it is frozen, it melts slower and is actually as hard or harder than concrete. Had the HMS Habakkuk been built, it would probably have been as large or larger than the ship kit-bashed here, and would have been very difficult to sink, since bombs and torpedoes would have had a reduced impact on the ship (also bearing in mind that ice is less dense than water and naturally floats). Very interesting idea at least. I read about it many times (first about 30+ years ago when i was young boy eager to rad all about military history)! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Habakkuk Leo "Apollo11"
