spelk -> Crashing Problems (7/2/2011 8:57:45 PM)

I tried to run my Flashpoint Germany today and it kept keeling over with an exception error as soon as I tried to start the scenario.

I rebooted and tried again several times - I've had the game working a long, long time ago - but can't get past this crash problem now.

So I uninstalled the game, and tried to reinstall it fresh. Now, during installation I get this error message

irsetup
"A sharing violation occurred while accessing an unnamed file."

Can't get past this error message now.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Further to this, I've managed to get it to install by turning off my Anti-Virus software (AVIRA) and closing all applications before installation.

However, running the game, I still get the exception error upon pressing the "proceed" button after selecting the scenario.

Here's some of the information generated in the bug report:

Hey Spelk.  Sorry to hear about this problem.  I see from you separate debug report that you tried turning off your anti-virus and that did not help either.

This is a shot in the dark, but once in a long while I get a file that is opened and locked by another program so that it cannot be written to by the first program.  If you can see if this is so by trying to delete flashpoint.ini outright.  If you cannot then some other program (like a text editor?) has it open and needs to be closed.  Once flashpoint.ini is deleted just start the game over and it will be recreated with default settings.

You are running on Win XP SP3 and it should be perfect on that.  I'll watch this space and see how you do or you can email me directly at robertc@matrixgames.com if you prefer.

We will figure this out.  Cheers, Rob Crandall

Thanks for your suggestions Rob, I'll try them out this evening and let you know how it goes here.

Oddly, this is starting to stir a faint memory. I guess I still have a few brain cells left, lol. Let me do some looking around in my other notes as well.

More when I know it, Rob C

spelk -> RE: Crashing Problems (7/5/2011 7:14:52 PM)

I've tried to run it under Safe Mode, but no joy there. I also used MSCONFIG to disable most of the startup items and processes/services running, and it still bombs with the same error. I've deleted the ini file and it is recreated, but alas it doesn't get past the Proceed button.

It is weird because I have played Flashpoint Germany a good while ago on this machine, so obviously something has installed something, perhaps a common component that just doesn't agree with the game. I can't really specify whats been added to the machine since I last played FG - because its so long ago, and I install SO many things most of which are games.

I appreciate your looking into this Rob.

Hi Spelk,

If you cannot run FG directly from Windows XP, you can try to install another Win XP (as a virtual machine under virtualization software). Try with Virtual Box (it's free) or any other virtualization software. I do that with my Mac (I run windows games under Parallels).

I want to enjoy a good AAR from FG as the one you wrote for RGW.

spelk,

If you look at the properties of the ini file is it set to read only?
