AdmSpruance, I just had the pleasure of reading your AAR from the very beginning to the current turn. I am especially impressed with your operational planning and your focus on intelligence data to decide on your next moves. You are putting up a really impressive game against a capable opponent. Concerning the Philippine defense strategy: This surely must have delayed many of Erstad´s further deployments. At some time I began to wonder why he is not at least using float planes to scout at the most obvious approach routes. The USAFFE fights or dies with the availability of supply, except if the IJA brings more than the original forces, so cutting off reinforcements should be #1 priority to any JFB.

LoBaron.....thanks for your comments. There seems to be a problem with the game engine in regards to naval search picking up single ship TFs....its pretty easy to sneak a single ship through your opponents naval search. Dave had to make surface TFs and have them search the sea lanes to finally interdict my blockade runners. Then Dave returned me the favor by invading with single ship TFs far behind my lines in the New Hebrides. Interpreting the sigint is a double edged sword....Dave feeds me bad intel non stop and I only get the occasional intel nugget by sifting through a lot of contradictory data. Still...the whole body of sigint has prevented Dave from really catching me offguard anywhere critically important and has allowed me to denude certain fronts and theatres to reinforce the most threatened ones(and begin a very early counteroffensive into the Solomons). My Luzon defense has certainly absorbed most of the IJA SAA (after the fall of the DEI)and prevented Dave from really launching a full scale Japanese Phase II offensive. 7/19-7/20/42 SUBS SS Wahoo puts a fish in xAK Tonegawa Maru near Wakkanai. SS O19 lands a torpedo on CA Haguro near Singapore....this CA was participating in the Japanese naval actions off Akyab and may be indicating that the Combined Fleet is redeploying to the south Pacific from the Bay of Bengal. SS RO-34 is hit by 6 DCs from an USN ASW TF near Tassafaronga. SS Pompano sinks xAK Midori Maru off Shikukan. SS KXIV sinksw TK Shoyo Maru off Brunei. PHILIPPINES Dave has heavily reinforced Luzon. He now has the 5th, 16th, 18th. 48th and parts of the 4th and 33rd Divisions. Japan now has 2400 AV at Clark opposing 1636 Allied AV. SOPAC The infantry formations of I Amhibious Corps complete their march through the jungle on Guadalcanal and reach Tassafaronga. They will rest this turn as the armor arrives and then an assault will be launched on the Japanese garrison there. There appears to be a lot of IJN shipping activity off Tassafaronga(even with the minefields there)...Dave may be starting to withdraw by sea...... so Im sending a cruiser force there next turn to investigate. A fast transport TF reinforced Tulagi with both troops and supplies. SWPAC The 22nd Marine Regiment storms ashore at Milne Bay. A shock attack is ordered against the IJN naval guard unit defending there next turn. Admiral Hill's Amphibious TF will land the 132nd Regiment at Woodlark Island next turn. Carrier AC and land based AC from Rossel Is. cover both invasions. CL Boise and DD Blue collide as the Allied Tfs manuever off New Guinea and both ships will need to return to port to repair extensive damage. 7/21-7/22/42 SWPAC After repeated aerial and naval bombardments.......the 22nd Marine Regiment overruns the IJN naval guards at Milne Bay.....the Japanese stragglers are forced back into the endless jungles of New Guinea. SWPAC has re-established a position on the mainland of New Guinea and Milne Bay will become the HQ for the recapture of Papua. Meanwhile.....the 132nd Regiment storms ashore at Woodlark Island only to find it deserted. If you look at the map from the last post.....Woodlark stands out in the middle of the Solomon Sea...poised as a dagger aimed at New Britain and Rabaul. Dave wasnt sitting still during all of this.....he staged several squadrons of fighters and bombers into Rabaul and Lae and a major air battle broke out over the Solomon Sea as Bettys attacked the Allied carriers and amphib TFs. When the smoke cleared......Japan lost 103 AC to 40 Allied AC. In A2A Japan lost 83 AC vs 14 Allied AC. Plane losses include 40 Betty, 14 A6M2s, 10 Nells, 10 A6M3s, 10 Oscars, 6 P-40Es and 3 P-39Ds. In the south....the Chinese have re-entered Canton and are again sieging it. I dont seem to be having any supply issues in China even though the Burma Road was cut way back in Dec. 1941. In fact...I seem to be building supplies in northern China now that we have retaken Loyang/Tsiaotso/Chengchow. 7/23-7/24/42 SWPAC Seabees and base forces are dropped off at Milne Bay and work begins on level 1 ports and AFs there. The 132nd Regiment secures Woodlark Island. I can't overstate how critically important Woodlark Island is from both a strategic and operational standpoint. Not only will a level 2 AF at Woodlark allow us to base DBs and TBs that can interdict the sealanes to Munda and Shortlands.......but Woodlark together with Milne Bay and Rossel virtually isolate Port Moresby and the Torres Strait from the Japanese Imperial Fleet. Sure....the Japanese navy could still reach Port Moresby from the DEI....but PBYs at Darwin will give several days notice of their arrival. Once our new airfields are operational at Portland Roads and Milne Bay.....SWPAC will invade both Port Moresby and Horn Island and re-open the Torres Strait. We are building a new defensive line 2 hexs E and SE of Changsha. Japan has 25 LCUs massed on the Katha/Myitkina highway. We have 1350 AV with 3 British anti-tank regiments waiting for them in Myitkina. Another 2000 AV outside of Kalemyo threatens the Japanese rear. Now that we've pulled back within a hex of Kalemyo everyone is in supply again. The supply situation as a whole has improved in Burma. The AF at Dimapur is now up to level 5 and the AFb at Kohima is level 3....supplies seem to be flowing much better now into Imphal and Kalemyo. 7/25-7/26/42 SWPAC The amphib TF at Milne Bay completes unloading of construction engineers. BFs and supplies. The port and AF are already 70% to level 1 so they should be functional in 1 more turn. At Woodlark Island....engineers BFs and supplies begin to offload this turn. The port and AF are 30% to level 1. Land based fighters at Rossel Island will cover the unloading here and the Allied carriers will retire to Luganville to replenish their flight ops, refuel and take on plane replacements. After Japan lost another 81 AC over the Solomon Sea 2 turns ago.....over 160 Japanese AC were lost over 2 turns.....the Japanese air forces were pretty much stood down this last turn. I have a list of 14 bases to assault in the near future in SWPAC/SOPAC and a list of 20 LCUs that are prepping for the assaults so I made a flow chart to keep track of where all the LCUs are and who is prepping for what objective. Things will quiet down in SWPAC for a bit as Milne Bay and Woodlark build up and the offensive will now switch back over to SOPAC. PHILIPPINES All quiet on Luzon as Dave is content to bombard Clark by land and air. Japan is now down to 2000 AV at Clark....they lost 450 AV in the last assault.... basically an entire division. Allied AV at Clark holds at 1500 with 900 AV in reserve at Manila. I think that I will run out of supplies here before I run out of combat troops so Im holding on the Manila( and its 100 supplies/turn) and may make my final stand there as opposed to Clark/Battan. Even though I have expended a lot of supplies in the battle for Clark there remains around 30,000 supplies spread throughout southern Luzon. Dave had massed the IJA panzer korps in Canton....and I built an anti-tank trap 2 hexes away at Wuchow but the attack never came. Now IJA armor is massed in Burma and Ive built an anti tank trap at Myitkina....but so far no assault. The IJA 15th Army and the Southern Army have been prepping forever for Myitkina. Sigint reported this turn that Southern Army was loaded on an xAKL heading to Rangoon so maybe Dave is just waiting for his command HQ to arrive. I have corps and command HQs 100% prepped for Myitkina. Transport AC will begin to airlift the US 31st Regiment from China into Myitkina this turn.... their experience and 18 anti-tank guns will come in handy in case the assault on Myitkina finally materializes. 7/27-7/28/42 SWPAC Milne Bay now has a level 1 port and AF. Woodlark Island has 75% completion of a level 1 port and airfield. The amphibious TF completes unloading at Woodlark and heads back to Luganville. Deboyne Island has now completed 90% of a level 1 AF. SOPAC Dave evacuates the remnants of his troops from Tassafaronga before we can launch another assault. Engineers begin construction of a fighter strip at Tassafaronga while the armor and combat troops begin the arduous march back through the jungle to Lunga. The Allied carriers will reach port at Luganville next turn and take on fuel and replacements. Another fast transport TF resupplies Allied troops on Tulagi. We now outnumber the Japanese on Tulagi by a factor of 265 AV to 125 AV. Allied BBs continue to naval bombard Tulagi to build up experience levels. Japanese bases at Shortlands and Munda remain 100% suppressed. PHILIPPINES Dave reinforces on Luzon and now has 8 artillery LCUs bombarding in addition to 5 divisions at Clark. CBI Dave heavily bombs Bhamo and marches in a division this turn. We have been airlifting supplies into Myitkina since early 1942 so Bhamo doesnt really affect us one way or the other. Another 20 IJA LCUs begin their final advance into Myitkina. Allied transport AC continue to airlift the 31st Regiment and another SWPAC towed tank destroyer battalion into Myitkina so our supply levels have dropped a bit but we should be plenty ready should any IJA armor appear. Lots of air should be engaging in the skiies over Burma/India next turn. I have a forward level 2 AF at Kalemyo now so am staging in a BF in from Imphal. 7/29-7/30/42 CBI My last post was inaccurate....the base NW of Myitkina is not Bhamo but is Warazup. The IJA Imperial Guards Division is at Warazup. Over a dozen aerial attacks by over 80 bombers pounds the Imperial Guards Division....its fatigue and disruption must be sky high now. The Japanese air force doesnt engage so their is no massive air battle over Burma. No IJA attack at Warazup....maybe its just a diversion. The main body of the IJA 15th Army bears down on Myitkina. Allied transport AC continue to fly in reinforcements and supplies to Myitkina. In China......Japan invades at Kwangchown for the 2nd time in the war and captures it. SOPAC: SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN PART II.....CENTRAL SOLOMONS Admiral Hill's amphibious TF will begin landing assault troops at Rekata Bay next turn. The invasion will be covered by some 130 fighters based at Russell Is. The Allied carriers will patrol a bit to the south of the invasion in case KB shows up. I havent spotted KB in over 2 weeks and they could be anywhere..... including just north of Rabaul. SOPAC objectives here in the central Solomons will be Rekata Bay and Vella LaVella. Capture of these 2 bases will advance Allied land based airpower a couple hundred miles to the north and help to isolate the Japanese base at Munda. I will not use her in a replenishment mode. I moved off her 24 plane SBD-3 squadron and disbanded it to provide more DBs for replacements. THE AIR WAR........CONTINUED In A2A....Japan has now lost 1733 AC vs 1452 Allied AC or about 20% more.....about the same A2A loss ratios as we had when I last posted on this 2 months ago. Here is a screenshot of Allied plane losses by type. The Hurricane IIb has dropped a few positions from the 3rd place ranking it had 2 months ago.....I think that this is indicative of the air war that has been raging over the Solomons where the CBI has become almost a secondary theatre(at least for the Allies). The other thing that sticks out for me are the relative A2A losses for the B-17E and B-17D models. We've lost 2x B-17Ds in A2A vs B-17E losses even though the B-17Ds have been almost completely retired and the B-17Es have conducted 15x-20x as many sorties over the course of the war. The 1st step will be to re-open the Torres Sraits. CBI A disasterous turn for the Allies both on land and in the air. It seems as if the weather was good on the Burma side of the border...so all the Japanese planes flew. But the weather was poor on the Indian side of the border.....thunderstorms and rain over the Allied airfields at Ledo, Imphal, Kalemyo and Chittagong. So I had given orders to Eastern Army to withdraw 1 hex to the NE to go from clear terrain to a jungle hex....and also to advance on the IJA garrison at Katha. I knew that my B Sqn Hussars didnt have enough movement to exit the hex this turn but I thought that the rest of Eastern Army would make it. I_almost_ cancelled the movement orders for Eastern Army knowing that my army was bigger than the IJA forces but I was concerned with the 22 LCUs approaching from Shwebo. So Im not sure who really is surrounding whom here. Ive got reinfocements on the way from Kalemyo including 18th UK but eastern Burma is becoming very convoluted now. I learned from my 1st game of AE that the OOB of Tenth Air Force is insuffucient to gain air superiority over the CBI so I have reinforced India with several USAAF fighter and bomber squadrons. I also sent 3 VMF fighter squadrons with obsolete Texan trainers to India.... the thought here was that they would quietly train in India until 1943 and then Id unleash the Corsairs and the USMC pilot pool on Japan. Well the air war isnt working out for the Allies currewntly in the CBI.....and it seems as if dave has conceded complete air superiority to the Allies in the Solomons and SWPAC.....so Im turning off replacements for all 2E and 4E bomber squadrons in SOPAC/SWPAC and will be trying to upgarde my Bolo squadrons in India as quickly as possible to the new B-17Fs, B-24Ds and B-25Cs that began arriving this month. Im also converting one of my VMF Texan squadrons at Calcutta over to F4F-4s as I have over 80 F4F-4s in the pool now. To get the amounts of supplies to those small empty bases south of Manila, you must have used the supply draw arrows, I presume that you have tried setting the supplies required down to 0 at those bases to see if the supplies will move north up to Clark again. I have to say that I was very interested to see if you could hold the Philippines the entire game. Even with 9 Japanese divisions there, I still think that you could have held Clark had supplies flowed there properly, especially if you could have got a decent fighter force above Clark to allow rapid forts construction. With all those troops in Luzon and Burma, there must be literally nothing but SNLFs, very low experience garrison units and naval guards in the rest of the Pacific.

yubari....good comments! I had 8000 supplies in Manila and set the supply draw to zero. Next door at Clark I set the supply draw to 31,000......no supplies were drawn into Clark. I might have been able to hold out indefinitely at Clark.....Dave had over 600 squads disabled in his attack this turn. And you are right about most of the map being guarded by small units. I had considered a relief operation to Luzon or maybe a big leap forward to western New Guinea to support an eventual relief op to Luzon but with CV Lexington still in the shipyard at Pearl repairing her torpedo damage......and with CV saratoga maintaining her position on the line with unrepaired torpedo damage.....I just dont have enough carriers to go head to head with KB let alone taking on KB and overwhelming Japanese land based air. I can easily overwhelm Dave's small land garrisons wherever I invade.....but besides lacking sufficient numbers of modern aircraft Im also lacking base forces so there is a limit to how fast I can expand. Dave pulled 7 armor LCUs out of Myitkina after they were roughed up by the Allied anti-tank guns....only 2 armor units remain. And then Dave will need to make a decision.....whether to first go after Bataan or Manila. Im going to miss the supply that was being generated at Wenchow but overall the situation is China is very favorable for the Allies. I was able to massively reinforce Nanchang before the Japanese could arrive and now with the Chinese threat to Kiukiang the Japanese have abandoned the base. Japan's army at Wenchow has been bloodied and will need to rest for a bit before causing mayhem somewhere else. I had to delay the invasion for almost a week after recon showed that over 15,000 IJA troops were at Port Moresby. I had been hoping to send the 6th Australian Division back to India to join up with the rest of I Australian Corps but now the 6th Australian is needed to remain in SWPAC to help capture Port Moresby. The 6th Australian Division is 100% prepped for Port Moresby as is the rest of I US Corps. This will be the largest invasion so far in the war for the Allies....2 divisions, a tank battalion and a corps HQ. The largest previous invasion for the Allies was 2 regiments. Allied carriers and surface TFs stand by to cover the landings. Some 300 medium and heavy bombers based at Portland Roads, Cooktown and Cairns will plaster the Japanese defenders at Port Moresby while 100 land based fighters at Milne Bay will help provide air cover. I dont know if it was the IJA armor that caused this or if Dave's bombers disrupted my troops more than the Allied bombers disrupted his troops. In retrospect....
