I know this has probably been asked before but is it easier of better to start with Uncommon Valor or this one? Can it be learned by just playing as there is no tutorial? Thanks in advance.

I have not played any of the previous Pacific games that lead to AE. I think the game is very learnable while playing the AI. You can play one of the small scenarios and not be overwhelmed. The support from both players and developers here on this forum are second to none. Based on these I would say to go straight into AE. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck - Enjoy...

The game has advanced greatly beyond UV. I suggest going straight to the Admiral's Edition.

Plus there are not a whole lot of people left on the UV forum or WITP for that matter. You won't get much help there. Might as well go with AE.

I agree. Jump right in. Yes it is more complex than UV. But you do not need an advanced degree in playing UV to learn AE. Some of the fundamentals are the same but UV is different enough that some UV knowledge might have to be unlearned to prevent mistakes in AE. The best use of UV at this point would be to learn if you like the game style. If you like UV, you will more than likely enjoy AE; if you hate UV, AE might not be the game for you.

No tutorial, but you can start with the smaller scenarios. Coral Sea then 1000 mile war and Guadalcanal. It'll still be a steep learning curve, but it's manageable.

I took a look at UV years ago and decided I prefered the user interface with WitP. I've enjoyed WitP for a couple of years until AE came out. Now find this more enjoyable.

I would just go for it with AE. You can start with a smaller scenario as suggested to get the hand of the interface and how to perform fleet functions. I play US vs. the AI. This game has several different layers to become proficient in. I'm at July '43 in my current campaign and am doing well, but still haven't mastered the pilot training. I'll work on this with my next campaign starting soon.

I've found that the AI is better in AE as well. Another good reason to just jump into AE.

What is the 1000 mile war? I've never heard of that one.

I followed the advice to try UV prior to WitPAE. I played a few scenarios in UV and then got WitPAE. In the end I wish I would have just jumped in and got WitPAE in the first place. The learning curve is not that much greater if you are playing a smaller scenario. I think the big difference is in the campaigns where all the nuances creep in with logistics and unit details that the curve starts to ramp up.

I fully agree... UV really is incorporated in WITP... in the smaller scenarios... so you would be wasting money and time by going into UV.... Ilovestrategy, 1000 miles is the Alaska scenarios when you first open up the game... it is an interesting one, but purely hypothetical.... Hal

Those old games had HORRIBLE GUI. So playing them will probably not be great help with AE.

In WIR/West Front you had to use quite a lots of keyboard for unit transfer and orders. Now mouse should be enough (and Y/N). Also, it is now easier to get statistics/overall reports.

I started with UV, but that was before the release of AE when WITP and UV had much the same interface and mechanics and UV was still a good choice for learning the mechanics on a game with a smaller scope.

Since AE added so many new capabilities in the mechanics, UV is no longer so good as a learning tool.

It is, however a great game for head to head play as it's smaller scope allows for pretty quick turn around on turns. I used to meet a friend at a coffee shop after work and play it head to head accross the table on a laptop. Watching the turn resolution together was great fun with each of us cheering and moaning appropriately at our respective upturns and downturns.

AE. play a small scenario if you need to, otherwise just jump in to 'the big one'. And dont get tempted to keep restarting because you think you made a mistake! History is full of mistakes. Just ask Hitlers mum.
