There was an excellent program on TV the other day all about why Challenger fell out of the sky. It expanded upon the original O-ring problem and questioned why, if the O-rings failed - Challenger did not blow up on the launch pad. How did she get so far - and, tantalisingly, could she have made it into space? Turns out some "slag" inside the rocket did the job of the failed O-ring, sealing the gases inside. It seems that Challenger was just seconds from safety, when the slag was dislodged during throttle up and...well we know the rest [:(] Really interesting - if ultimately sad - program.
