augustinus -> Unable to embark Australian Units (7/8/2011 5:31:20 PM)

I am in the sixth day of a PBEM game of Scenario 1 (The Full Campaign). Whenever I try to load an Australian ground unit to a transport TF in Australian ports (e.g. Sidney, Newcastle, Portland, etc.) the window pops up with no ground unit choices. All of the units that I had planned to embark have been placed in Strategic Mode, all packing has been accomplished, all belong to the same command HQ, and the ultimate destination is under the same HQ; none of them are "static". The APs making up the TFs have more than enough capacity for each of the ground units. I have been able to transport U.S. ground units from PH under the same conditions. Why am I unable to load Australian units to TFs? I am most appreciative of any feedback. Thanks.

check the LCU's HQ. It is probably a restricted HQ. Restricted HQ's do not allow seaborne transport....otherwise you could freely move them to areas the HQ is not allowed to send units too.

Virtually all Australian units except those that come in at Aden are "restricted" when you start the game. That includes air groups as well. You will find this with a lot of units from all Nationalities. And there are never enough PPs. As of 1/44, I have plenty of LCUs that could be bought out but I just do not have the PPs. (Canadian, New Zealand, Australian, Indian, and a few US. Right now, I would be willing to trade a few old BBs for about 4,000 PPs..

Of course I pay retail for all my units. Real men pay retail...[:-]

Nikademus and crsutton, thanks much for your comments.

Yes, any Ozzie unit under Australia Command (R) must change HQ to a non-restricted command like Southwest Pacific if you want to board them on a ship, even if you intend for them to go to an Australia Command base. If I remember correctly, Port Moresby is an Australia Command base - this could lead to confusion.

Wally, you are absolutely right and thanks for your imput. Actually, I found the explanation in the manual (which I failed to find beforehand) and Australian Command (R) forbids sea transport or air transport of ground units. Sorry I was not more diligent in looking over the manual before asking my question, but I am grateful to you and those who have brought it to my attention.

It was fresh on my mind because I went through the same issue myself a few days ago [:D]

I just started playing again after a couple year hiatus.

One small correction -- you can air transport restricted units, as long as it is to a base of the same restricted HQs. Many Allied players use their transport and patrol aircraft to airlift restricted Dutch LCUs from the outlying islands to reinforce Sumatra or Java.

It takes some time to get to understand the whole HQ-business, augustine: I know from experience. Also, IIRC, you can change units to another HQ for 1/4 of the pol.points cost if that new HQ is under the same Command HQ the unit was originally under: this quartered cost is, however, NOT shown on the screen where you change HQ's. E.g., when you want to change an Infantry brigade that is under Australia Command (R) to an unrestricted HQ (e.g., I Australian Corps), so as to be able to shipthe brigade out to somewhere else, the screen will say that this will cost you, say, 200 points. When you affirm your choice for I Aus. corps, however, only 1/4 (i.e. 50 points) will have been deducted from your pol. points total.

If you are playing the AI and want to be aggressive air transporting units into Rabaul is a really good way to delay the Japanese build up in the south. Don't do it against a live opponent tho.

Another thing to be aware of is that the PP cost for changing HQs is based on a units size (ie..the number of devices) so never set a unit you want to change HQs with to receive replacements until after you have changed it's HQ.

Thanks, to you Blackhorse, Houtje and HansBolter for your tips. Knowing all the ins/outs of HQ rules and pp costs certainly widens my planning horizon. Good luck in your AE endeavors.
