Or the Japanese have Stealth Betties.

For the last two weeks Japanese Betties have flown from Ambon to attack Allied warships AT Darwin. I have two RAAF Kittyhawk squadrons at Darwin on 90% CAP. I have put the most agressive leaders with the highest AIR rateings incharge. There is tons of AV and the base is not overstacked. Lots of supply and the airfield is maxed size. The results: Every raid I see "Raid was detected by radar" and there are usually 20+ Kittyhawks on the screen. I would see "4x Kittyhawk I's arriving" as well. However, the next message is always "Air to air done".[&:] The bombers go onto attack whatever is there (2x AM's sunk, 1x CA and 1x CL crippled, so far). Then there is the Post Combat Phase. Once there was an intercept. All the other times it was a repeat of the first air phase. I have tried making a squadron LRCAP the TF, changed alt, you name it. Now the Betties are bombing the arirfield and LCU's without fear of intercept.[:@]
The (even) odder thing is I had the 70th FS in P-39D's there before and they would always make an intercept. There EXP numbers were usually lower than the RAAF's.
Luckily this is an AI game so I can't get too upset (right[8|]). It's the latest Beta I think 1108p.
Thoughts?

Greg

Zip up a save and attach it here.

I'll analysis it tomorrow when I get home from work.
I don't believe anything has changed but a fix in one place can always snowball into somewhere else.

Alpha77 -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/12/2011 3:02:22 PM)

Is this early war ? I remember I had this severall times in 42 (first half), this is WAD I guess since the Jap had an ability to often sneak undetected into air screens untill it was to late. However this should change with time (as the Allied forces on all levels get better), eg. I have 2 Kittyhawk III (1 full sq, + 1 det) + 1 P39 there and they get into the air EVERYTIME even if CAP level is only 30 or 40. Guess setting the base forces on update also helps so they get newer radars. Also a range setting of 1 or 2 might be good. But this status is for Feb to April 43......The Jap does not do any serious damage anymore.

ah... and 90% Cap is much too high imo. Try 40-50

greg_slith -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/12/2011 3:04:33 PM)

Unfortunately my boss has this "thing" about me re-fighting WWII at work (who's the fascist now?). I'll have to send it when I get home tonight.

greg_slith -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/12/2011 3:12:54 PM)

It is now Jan 1, 1943. This is the only place where I'm having consistant problems. Even some Chinese squadrons rise to the occasion, everytime.
If this was a once-in-while occurance I'd be fine with it. But is has been everytime there has been a raid for the last month. And a total of ONE intercept out of 8 or 9 raids. The base forces there have radar, the raid is detected by radar and fighter are scrammbled. They just can't find the Betties, either before or after they drop their bombs/torps. And, again, the 70th FS was able to intercept but is now employed elsewhere.
I think my Aussies are drunk. Or maybe they have been kicked out of the bars in Darwin and are on strike[:D]

khyberbill -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/12/2011 5:30:39 PM)

What is morale of the pilots? Morale drops real fast with that many on CAP and then they dont fly and go fishing instead. I rarely exceed 30% CAP and when I do, only for a few days. I work to keep fighters at 90+% morale.

greg_slith -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/12/2011 6:13:54 PM)

I'm not sure because the war is on hold while earn a living[:D]. The thing is, the RAAF in Darwin hasn't gotten involved in any combat to speak of, while I have the 23rd FG which has been on 80% CAP in Burma and flies actual combat every day w/o problems. That is typical of ALL my fighter units throughout the Pacific. And while there are some raids that don't get heavily intercepted there is always at least one "attack" in the animation.
Oh, and I made sure they were not on 100% training (a mistake that cost me two carriers in a previous game[sm=00000018.gif])

Bradley7735 -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/12/2011 7:07:40 PM)

I have been seeing flights of bombers get through untouched lately (for a month or two). Even when they're escorted, they are not touched. Meaning my defending fighters scrap with the escorts, but the bombers are missed. This doesn't happen every time, and for a while I thought this was a random chance added in for historical accuracy. But, what I have noticed is that it has only happened with Betties and Nells. I first noticed when a small flight of Nells would bomb the China mainland. The chinese defenders would rise up, and never engage. That happened about 8 times in a row. I haven't noticed it happen 8 times in a row since then, but I'd say it happens once or twice every 2-3 game turns. It's always Betties or Nells from my experience. It can happen at a base, or at a CV task force (which really sucks.)

Unfortunately, I don't have a save. I'll keep an eye out for a good example (lots of fighers on cap and early notice).

john dobbins -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/17/2011 7:57:11 PM)

I usually use 20% training to keep them in top form and 20% CAP. This keeps fatigue at a reasonable level. If you know or suspect you're going to have a carrier battle in the next day or so, I would zero the training and set CAP at 40-50% max.

greg_slith -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/18/2011 2:42:10 PM)

I routinely set my cap to 70-80%. Everywhere else thre are no problems. All my squadrons are racking up kills. I even reset a Det of RAAF Airacobras to day CAP (They had actually been getting kills at night) and Lo and behold my Kittyhawks are now intercepting with the P-39's. I do think thee was a fatigue issue but I don't know why it hurt the RAAF more at a heavily supplied, non-overstacked base with over 100 extra AV while at Akyab I have five squadrons of P-40's flying (and fighting) daily at a base that is always close to empty (supply-wise). Maybe EXP trumps FAT when it comes to CAP.

geofflambert -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/18/2011 3:49:06 PM)

I'd be careful about that on your carriers. If more than one wave attacks them you won't have much left to defend the carriers after the first wave. Also, of course, you won't have much escort available for your own attacks.

Alpha77 -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/18/2011 4:34:17 PM)

I have a simmilar problem in China, but noticed this already long time ago, I just do not rely anymore on sqdrs in China to get in the air at all. Seems Changsa (even if enough supplies and airfield 5 ) is the worst city in China. No idea why..... but it is so,

... while from Canton my fighters even made a sweep of Hongkong (not succesful but thats another story). Now the Jap avoids to air attack anything closer than 2 hexes or so to Canton as he seems to realise I have actually planes there that would fight [:'(] There is also 1 good British Hurri squdr. guess these distract him, even if he could overhelm them on the long rum with numbers I supose. Meanwhile he happily bombs the sh** out of the other small towns we captured....but there is nothing which could be hit [:D]

Btw: The Jap also made 2 or 3 attacks with Betties which were not intercepted in India, guess there are too many variables involved. In Darwin my guys still do good, updated the KH III finally to Spits ..

greg_slith -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/18/2011 5:01:29 PM)

So true. I usually keep them at @ 60% CAP, especially early in the game when I need to keep the flat tops afloat. With my poor ranged strike A/C escort isn't always an issue.

greg_slith -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/18/2011 5:05:13 PM)

Changsha is pretty lazy with me, too.[:)]
I understand the occasional UN-intercepted raid, I was just curious about EVERY unintercepted raid on Darwin. I guess the well known sensitivity of the Australians[8|] needed to be taken into account. Guess they're all not Crocodile Dundee[:D]

michaelm75au -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/18/2011 9:15:03 PM)

My second post above asked for a save for me to review.
As you haven't done so, I assume that you must be happy with this.

greg_slith -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/18/2011 10:14:49 PM)

Two things:
1) I think it had to do with FAT; and more importantly-
2) I guess I'm too much of an idiot to figure out how to send a save[8|]

OMG! I can't tell you how frustrated I was looking for the "upload" thingy. Generally I'm a pretty smart guy but every now and then I get reminded that I'm only one upgrade from monkeys.[:D]
I'll give it a try tonight.
Thanks, Michael.

geofflambert -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/19/2011 3:50:16 PM)

You'll find it in folder Matrix Games / War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition

It will be one of the last files and is named wpae###.pws with ### being your save game number. I suggest copying the file to your desktop and then zipping it. Name the zip file raafhatesdarwin if you like.

Alpha77 -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/19/2011 3:51:34 PM)

Monkeys are clever just for the record and ravens and whales, too [;)]

Theages -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/19/2011 5:50:31 PM)

I also had the "air combat done" issue, but with Zeroes against B17 (January 1942). My CAP was set to fly at 25000 feet. When I set CAP altitute lower, air combat did happen. Maybe if CAP is much higher than the bombers, it takes the CAP too long to get to the bombers?

Alpha77 -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/19/2011 6:37:22 PM)

My cap at Darwin was: P39s @ 15000 KHIII 20000

vettim89 -> RE: The RAAF hates Darwin (7/19/2011 10:25:53 PM)

Of note I had the exact same problem when I updated to the latest version of the Beta. Same exact units same location. The GM4's were coming in at 6k so I dropped my Kittyhawks done and still no interception. So I put them back up to 15k and boom, they started intercepting again. Have no idea what happened there but I was experience the same screen: Bettys attack, air intercept screen pops up for like a second and then "air combat is over". Odd that the altitude reset fixed this problem
