I'll start with the question and you can ignore the following, inevitable, ranting: what's the most effective natural enemy in the game? By natural I mean the one that can pose as much problems without editor/modding/etc intervention.

Now the reason why I'm asking this is because I want to start a game where I can just explore all the wonders in the universe: big map and only one enemy. I need it to avoid late game boredom and have a purpose for the economy. Since it's only one it will be easy to edit it to be stronger but I'd like also to learn what race/gov combo you think it's naturally stronger.

I also realize that the answer could depend on what race/gov combo I choose so feel free to give any advice.

For me its the Mortalen. There are probably more aggressive races such as the Sluken - but the Mortalen seem to be a bit sneakier in their timing.

I find that the most difficult enemies are the ones that are unpredictable -- I guess in game terms that is the caution rating... the less cautious, the bigger pain they are...

I seem to have the most trouble with the Dhayut.
Especially early game they seem to love spawning close to me and attacking my home planet as soon as possible.

Never noticed the Dhayut to be a problem, will give them a whirl also.

Have to agree about Dhayuuts. If you let them expand in peace, they get problematic, fast. This mostly due to their unique hyper tech. Gizurreans and Boskaras can be an enemy to be reckoned with too.

Dhayuuts almost always seem to be my nemesis number uno if/when they get their show going. Don't really hate them, but damn how fast they get in your face if you are not careful.

will have to check if their unique hyper tech is the only explanation for this or not. If it is, I can give it to my chosen enemy....I really like TJ's idea about the caution implications.

Bare in mind that caution also affects military strength. The less cautious, the less ships they build. It's not the only factor, but if you set it too low, you'll weaken them. I'd set it just below 100.

Agreed on the Dhayuuts. They're always powerful in my games and I can remember them being my main adversary on more than one occasion.

As for government type. I'd say all those with low war weariness. Dictatorship, Despotism, Monarchy and Feudalism.

Nicely put about caution and weariness, Igard. Well, the Dhayuuts seem to be winning the contest by far so I've just bumped them to the top of the list.
