Mike Carroll -> Air Mission Altitudes (7/18/2011 7:13:18 PM)

What is generally considered the best altitudes for the various air missions (Naval Attack, Airfield Attack etc.? What are the most effetive altitudes for CAP? What is the most effective height for ASW and Naval Search Missions?

MIke,

You will probably discover that everyone has a different opinion on this question. Generally, I try to follow these simple points.

- If you are bombing a city or LCU that is supplied you can reduce your losses to flak (dependant upon device) by flying higher (roughly 6000+)
- If you want to coordinate strikes try to set the airgroups involved to the same altitude.
- Higher generally is better for fighters but I am a firm believer that you lose much of this benefit when you fly above the planes mvr rating.
- I like to fly multi-band altitudes for sweeps and CAP.
- The altitude you set will also affect secondary training.
- Change your altitudes when fighting over contested skies. Keep your opponent guessing.

Basically, fighters like it high and bombers do better low IMHO. Try to find a compromise in between and don't be afraid to experiment. It's a long game. You will figure out what works best for your strategy.

Here are some important things to understand about Naval Attack altitudes. I can vouch for these from testing and live play.

Dive Bombers:

11k-15k they will dive bomb.
7k-9k they will level bomb.

These are the two most useful ranges for them. 6k or below I believe they use their LowNav ratings not NavAtk. I've never used them this way due to flak losses. I believe they level bomb above 15k, but they might glide bomb below 20k. Doesn't matter: don't use them up there.

Torpedo Bombers:

11k-15k they will torpedo bomb. They receive flak twice just like DB's so keep them high on the ingress. That way you only get 1 shot at you from low (at 200' the torp release altitude).
7k-9k they will level bomb. Along with the DBs, this is good airfield attack mode. Experienced bombers will get lots of hits and do major damage. 9k is above most light flak too.

Again, don't send them down low unless you plan to lose a lot of planes. Now my experience is 100% Japanese, so there might be variations in usage the Allies can afford to do that the Japs can't (such as using LowNav attacks for accuracy purposes). The Allies also can do skip bombing which others more experienced in using it can discuss.

For both sides carrier aircraft, I strongly recommend the above ranges.
