HannoMeier -> All Level Bombers now at 6000ft... (10/15/2002 6:37:56 PM)

In a PBEM game, I wondered, why my opponent always attacks at 6000 feet now and I wondered also why his B17 are hitting very precise. Now I found the answer:

Patch 1.20 or 1.30:

11) Allied level bombers, such as the B-17, B-25 and B-26 are gaining full benefit from the Norden bombsite at low altitudes. Fixed. At altitudes less than 6000 feet, the targeting bonus from the Norden is now sharply attenuated.

Matrix please correct this, to make a gradual change. The situation is now: less than 6000: sharp reduction of accuracy. Equal or larger than 6000 no change in Norden bombsite.

Please remove the artificial barrier. Otherwise some player could think of "playing the system".

Regards,

Hanno

[/B][/QUOTE]At 6000 feet, your CAP should be causing some disruption in his attack if his strike is unescorted.

The US Norden Bombsight was ineffective below 6000 feet and useless against moving objects such as ships, hence the reduction of bombing accuracy. Allied Players were setting level bombers to 1000 feet and blowing the hell out of everything in sight, especially ships, which wasn't quite accurate.

B17's were being used to wreak havoc on TF's, when in reality, they would have 1). had a hard time hitting such an object at low altitude, and 2). with low maneuvability, taken a pounding to do it.

I have a problem with US Dive Bomber accuracy (Thread-jacking ALERT! ;) ). In July 42 one strike, 60 + SBD Dauntless from 3 carriers with 20+ stubby little F4F-4 Wildcats escorting, burst thru IJN CAP of 60+ Zeros. The remaining 40+ SDBs that made it to target MISSED THE 2 FATTEST CVs IN THE IJN FLEET! 20+ went after 1 CV, and the rest scattered their targets. I could see if they were unescorted, but come on! Ok, now I'm whining.

Anyway, the level bombing model is pretty accurate. If your opponent wants to attack at 6000ft, shred him.

I normally set my bombers to 6000ft to avoid the 20-25mm flak. These guns have ranges to 5200ft- and are potent weapons. Any plane that attacks with a torpedo I leave at 6000ft and let the pilot handle the approach after the first round of flak. But I don't want to put them too high in case they don't sight the enemy!

If the is known to have little/no flak I try to attack lower. Even the B17 is still causing more damage at 1000ft, than at other settings.
