Oldguard1970 -> Engineers to Akyab?? (7/20/2011 2:26:49 PM)

I am scratching my head about how to get any engineers to Akyab in order to build the port and airfield and forts. I suppose I must land units with engineer capacity at Crooks Bazaar and march to Akyab.

If so, what units might be good to use?

Is there a better way?

Best regards,
John

If it's a dot base you should first land some naval support (they help you unload "heavy equipment"), then use a normal amphib TF to unload the engineers...is surely more fast than march!

Or, use seaplane transport such as the catalina or coronado. You get a limited supply of coronado transport types that have a massive cargo capacity. They can fly troops to undeveloped dot bases.

Akyab is not a dot base. It starts off with a level 3 airfield but no pier. Because it already has an airfield, normal air transport will do.

Yes, correct. You need a unit with naval support, then you can unload the dozers with an amphib mission. I use the Addu Atoll baseforce for this. Has plenty of naval support.

Wow! Thanks for the fine answers. I appreciate your help.

Cool, so Naval support is needed to unload?  I was looking for an answer.  I'm getting my butt beat because I can't unload heavy equipment, causing PM, Noumea, and a lot of other places to fall pretty easy.  Supplies & people unload, but not the heavy equipment.

If by PM you mean Port Moresby, it starts the game with intrinsic naval support. Look at the 15th RAAF base force stats.

For the small ports, remember to use amphib TF first to get the engineers/naval support there.

Maybe, but I could not land the 6th Artillery there via an amphib TF. The 256th Coastal Artillery will not unload it's gear on Noumea, and a light AA unit will not unload on Akyab. All 3 had a base force (or more) I'm just trying to figure out why.

Certain devices like large AA guns and radar sets can't be unloaded at (0) size ports (some can't even be unloaded at (1) size ports) even by Amphibious TF, unless Naval Support is present. The recommendation above to land Naval Support is what solves this problem.

Not all base forces have naval support. Examine each one and look at the main base information screen to see what the total of naval support is for the hex.

Disco Duck -> RE: Engineers to Akyab?? (7/24/2011 7:08:17 PM)

I am still a little confused. One of the posts by Lecivius states that he cannot unload heavy units at PM ( Port Moresby?). Port Moresby start the game with Naval support so unloading should not be an issue.

Bradley7735 -> RE: Engineers to Akyab?? (7/25/2011 3:37:27 AM)

The largest items need about 30 naval support to unload. So, if you have 10 NS, you can unload some equipment, but not the real big things (radar, large guns, probably tanks, etc.) If you have 30 or more NS, you should be able to unload everything. Bear in mind that you're not going to unload everything on the first day. You might unload 1-2 real large pieces of equipment per day. the more NS, the bigger and faster you can unload. The less, the smaller and slower you can unload. Also, check to make sure you're unloading from an AMPHIB TF, not a Transport TF. Transport needs a dock to unload.

As a newbie this concept was one the harshest lesson to learn :oops: Midway a level 1 port with slight damage could not offload a simple eng detachment via transport ... then after forgetting this lesson the Pango Pango Marine detachment took days to unload :( IMHO) This is A very key nuance in this game .. especially any port less than 3 and ports lacking naval support ..one needs to "invade" ones frendly port with combat loads using AP's .. not exactly intutive to at least one player ;)

Shark7 -> RE: Engineers to Akyab?? (7/25/2011 4:10:44 PM)

Simple way is to fly in your naval support, then send in the engineers in an amphibious TF. The naval support will speed the unloading. The fact that Akyab is a level 3 airfield really helps simplify this one.

Is this in the manual or should this be posted on the "tech support" manual update thread?

I don't know if this is in the manual. I'm posting from my experience and from what I remember of things I've read on the forum.

That naval supports is critical to offloading is in the manual but how much naval support helps or the threshold is not . so this is a great post .. 30 naval support seems to be the key number to get equipment off ..

dr.hal -> RE: Engineers to Akyab?? (7/27/2011 5:08:13 PM)

Crackaces, amphibious loading is not always for attack.... it is a WAY of distributing a loading that allows certain elements to offload first then be followed by those that would need assistance. So it is a very real reflection of what is actually needed and a good point to have in the game. Amphibious landings are a very complicated issue and if you don't get the load right, you are in trouble (especially if there are enemy units in the target hex!!).....
