Wombat63 -> Size Does Matter! (10/16/2002 8:05:46 PM)

I was raised on Metric
Does any one have a table they can send me with a comparision on calibres
I mean is a 5cm gun bigger than a 6pdr or a 3 inch etc.
If someone could help out it would help with unit selection.
:confused:

I think it's better to look at the MAX PENETRATION stat when buying AT guns.
In this way you don't need to know the different measurement sistem.

BTW
50 mm = 5 cm = 1,969 inch
75 mm = 7.5 cm = 2,953 inch i.e. 75mm = 3 inch gun
...

Jim1954 -> (10/16/2002 8:28:53 PM)

1 inch = 2.54 cm or 25.4 mm.

1 cm (10mm) = .39 inches.

50mm gun = 5 x .39 = 1.95 inches.
3 " gun = 3 x 25.4 = 76.2 mm.

Not really sure how the Brits came up with 40mm = 2 pdr, 57 mm = 6 pdr, 77mm = 17 pdr and 88mm = 25 pdr. Weight of the shell, maybe?:confused:

If I remember what I read somewhere the #Pound thing is derived from the weight of a lead ball of the diameter of the tube.

Capt. Pixel -> (10/20/2002 6:23:22 AM)

Gnoccop is right, the barrel diameter is only part of the equation. Barrel length, muzzle velocity, Rate of Fire and ammunition type are all important considerations in choosing a effective AT weapon.

SPW@W's Penetration Factor is probably your best short-hand data for selecting your weapons. (At least for AP vs armored vehicles. :) )

Ograbme -> (10/21/2002 5:15:55 AM)

Probably a stupid question, but do all guns of the same diameter do the same damage to infantry?

NO!
in game terms it depend on the HE Kill factor (IIRC)

Katana -> (10/21/2002 8:00:05 PM)

What he said. I think it may also depend on ROF in some cases, ie light AA.

Yep! :D A 20mm autocannon (which ALL 20mm's are) is a lot more deadly than what it's size says. I've even creamed T-34s with the 20mm on a PzII ...

Btw, I'm shamelessly plugging myself here :p but I did this once (and I'm so happy I just found the thread)

What did you do, shoot up as it ran over the Pz II?

Well, the poor T was indeed running straight at the PzII. Distance about 3 hexes, so the Pz commander let go with the 20mm. Went something like this:

Pz: *dakka-dakka-dakka-dakka*

T-34: *pweengg-pwwiiong-pwiiing* (sounds of richochets :p)

T-34: *boom* (counter-fire)

Ground-dwelling critter: aughhhh.... ;)

Pz: *dakka-dakka-dakka-dakka*

T-34: *pwiiing-pwoooiing-scrunch!-boom!!* :D :D

Don't recall exactly, but it was indeed a front hit somewhere. (possibly a vulnerable location - T-34s does have their tanks placed at very unfortunate positions in the front..)

Ograbme -> (10/25/2002 10:43:09 AM)

You can even kill KVs with little 222 cars!
And if those German 20mm guns are causing you trouble, just sent some Russian infantry after them; I've had Mosins penetrate and destroy PzIIs through the front hull!

challenge -> (10/25/2002 10:26:49 PM)

The later models of the Pz II has enough armor to at least stop a rifle round. Before the -- f I think it is -- the armour is about as thick as the paper you wrote your last letter home on. The ACs, however ... :)

The 20s on the ACs give you reasonable fire power for the size so their great for taking out opposing ACs or HTs. As for the infantry -- keeping the Pz II and the ACs away from point blank gets to be a challenge. Grenades and such make a mess of them real fast and at even 150 m the MGs can do some damage. The 8 Rad has a closed top and better armor so it's better against such things, but then you lose the sighting advantage of the open top.

Once you get to the 75 mm on the AC though it gets rediculas. One hit/One kill is rare, and with only a few shots, you can't even use them as support vehicles for very long.

Didn't the Germans make one version with a 50 mm?

if this helps neat chart http://freeport-tech.com/wwii/000_admin/009_weights.html
