Schanilec -> Trying to fill my carriers squadrons. (7/27/2011 4:13:35 PM)

11 September 1942:
I have at Pearl Harbor the Carriers Wasp and Hornet with some depleted F4F and SBD squardons. The Saratoga is in the shipyard for another 5 months. The CVE Copahee has arrived at Pearl with 28 F4F's and 28 SBD's in two VR squadrons. Now how do I get those VR squadrons to flesh out the Wasp and Hornet squadrons. I have all the related carriers disbanded less the Saratoga. I've tried a couple of things. Does the Copahee need to be in Transport air, Air Escort or some other assigned mission. Right now I've transferred a SBD squadron from Hornet to base and the SBD VR squadron from the Copahee. Is there a good way to get the desired aircraft to those carriers.

Thanks in advance,

Schani

The Copahee should be in a Replenishment TF for the system to work, but I do believe that the other carriers need to be in an Air Combat TF in order to take the replacements from the Copahee (I could be wrong about this). Your squadrons that have been rebased to the land base should just go ahead and take replacements on their own without using aircraft from the Copahee (you might have to either hit the switch "Replacements allowed" or just hit the button manually to take replacements).

I kinda thought Replenishement. I'll give your suggetions  a whirl this evening.

Thanks.

Or, just replace your VR squadron planes with obsolete types such as the buffalo, vindicator or early helldiver and use them to train pilots. The wildcats and dauntless types will then gradually go into your pool where you can use them in your depleted squadrons.

Schanilec -> RE: Trying to fill my carriers squadrons. (7/28/2011 6:31:00 PM)

You know I have never figured out how to downgrade the aircraft. The only thing that I do is hit the upgrade/no upgrade button in the squadron. I know I'm missing something here. And damn I forgot to check Pearl Harbor last night to see if the carrier groups were getting their replacement planes. Note to self.[8|]

The button below the upgrade button, in most cases, will have text in yellow next to the execute arrow. Click on that text and a list of planes that the unit can "upgrade" to will be displayed. Find some earlier aircraft model, select it, then push "allow upgrades" at the bottom.

When you get back to the main squadron display, push updrade and the older models will appear. As crsutton said, the ones you just replaced will enter the pool of available aircraft for replacement beginning in a day or two. I've found that if there's a lot of planes moved into the replacement pool in this fashion, it may take five or six days for all (or almost all) of them to be available again.

If you have chosen PDU OFF for your game then you will not be able to downgrade the aircraft in your squadrons.

Personally, I find the VR squadrons quite handy at keeping my frontline squadrons filled with aircraft.

Is it allowed to use them as normal combat sqdrs ? Or is this gamey or so ?

Cause I did not know they only should serve to resupply combat units [:(]
(I learned this 2-3 months ago in this forum).... but still sometimes use them for combat as I resupply my air units at landbases mostly...

bradfordkay -> RE: Trying to fill my carriers squadrons. (7/28/2011 11:05:14 PM)

It's not gamey to use them as combat squadrons, but you will find that most of the pilots in the VR squadrons are seriously lacking in experience...

Just be aware that CVEs with VR squadrons equipped with obsolete aircraft not currently deployed on the fighting flat tops, will be of absolutely no value if placed in a Replenishment TF. VR squadrons only provide replacement aricraft to combat squadrons equipped with the same exact aircraft model.

You beat me to my question...so, is there anything we can do with obsolete -R groups that dont have an ugrade path (besides disbanding)?

Schanilec -> RE: Trying to fill my carriers squadrons. (7/29/2011 6:08:52 PM)

Replinishment worked. The Wasp is heading for Noumea. The Hornet is still in port. Wasn't enough dive bombers. So she waits. PDU is off so no downgrading of squadrons. But I'm still happy to have three carriers in theatre.

Thanks for the help,

Schani

Other than using the VR units for pilot training, or removing one of the squadrons so that the remaining on board squadron falls to within the CVE's flying limit and then sending the CVE off to battle with the obsolete airframes, no I can't immediately think of anything else you could do.[:)] After all, it was your decision to so downgrade in the first place.[;)]

I tried to disband a VR unit, it says "carrier units can not be disbanded".... withdraw works only for 60 days. What am I doing wrong ? This unit is based at land not at a CV.

Ok, this I'm stuck on in my Coral Sea scenario. If the "Upgrade" button is on does that mean it will upgrade or do I need to actually click on it to make my planes upgrade? Sorry for the stupid questions, I promise I have been reading them manual, I'm in my 5th turn of this game! [:D]

And that, milord, perfectly sums up our submission made in the "Rommel" thread re learning lessons.

Downgrading is not an option with PDU OFF.

With PDU ON you have a much wider inventory of aircraft to "upgrade" to. The upgrade list generally includes older obsolete models.

The two relevant buttons are "Upgrade" and the "Upgrade Now". Clicking on the "Upgrade" button takes you to the list of possible "upgrade" models. There you will be informed if there is a scheduled model to upgrade to. If there is one scheduled then it is highlighted even if the model is still some months/years from entering production. Whether or not there is a pre-determined model upgrade scheduled, you can select from the list any model presented. However your choice will not take effect unless you also click on the bottom of the screen the button for the upgrade change to take effect.

With the upgrade enabled, two possible outcomes will ensue. The unit will automatically upgrade to the designated model when the upgrade conditions are met. Alternatively, if those upgrade conditions already apply, you can click on the "Upgrade Now" button to manually effect the changeover.

Edit: OK I've done a hash job of properly identify my contribution and what i was quoting. The highlighted comments in bold italic are my response.

You won't need to check PH, it will be in the ops log for the turn in your save directory.
If they did, it will say something like "(squadron) takes (planetype) VR replacements"

Any answer to this one ? Can these "reserve" units not be disbanded ? Or is this a bug of my "older" game version or WAD ? Or do I need them bring to a "home city" (like land units) Thanks

Gunner98 -> RE: Trying to fill my carriers squadrons. (8/9/2011 8:59:41 PM)

What is the best way of using the CVEs with the VR sqns? For the longest time I was grouping them with both AOs and AEs in big replenishment groups but now I am thinking (at least until 45) that its dopy to keep my AEs with the AOs for underway replen since the AEs need to be at a dot hex to transfer the ammo. How about the VR sqns? Does it make more since to have them moving around closer to the CVTFs? They can defend themselves - sort of?

Advice please?
