Perturabo -> I'm very angry about Buck Rogers (7/28/2011 5:53:33 PM)

So, I have read Armageddon 2419 a few months ago and after reading it I bought a book with Buck Rogers comic strips which were supposed to be a comic adaptation of the story.

At first, I loved the graphics, but after several strips the story said good bye to the story of the novel and sanity and intelligence too. It turned into a story for kiddies with nonsensical adventures - a bit like Flash Gordon but without his charisma and chivalry.
The comic is supposed to be post-apocalyptic with total war with technologically superior enemies but it quickly devolves into nonsense like the enemy emperor wanting the protagonist's love interest in his harem and protagonist saving her and stuff like that.

The novel was serious business - with lots of combat, descriptions of military technology and tactics, violence, genocide conducted by both sides and Rogers killing enemies in fights in gory ways. None of these is in the comic.

I enjoyed the original novel.

That wasn't exactly a "flick." Itwas a TV series that lasted two seasons, which had an episode guest starring Buster Crabbe (who played both Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon in the serials, as pictured above).

To bring it back on topic, the TV series was definitely aimed at the young (or young at heart), as evidenced by the robot that pretty much did nothing but say "beedeebeedeebeedeebee" while carrying the ORAC'ish* robot around his neck.

* ORAC is a reference to the portable computer from Blake's 7 (although, theirs had an "attitude"), in which Blake was missing for the majority of the series and the team was less than 7 for the majority as well.

Actually, it was a flick. The TV series came off of the movie, same actors and actresses.

It looks like so. Sounds like we have the first case of the infamous "franchise reimagining for broader audience".

Flash Gordon (the comic strip) is more coherent as Flash started out as a heroic character that beats enemies up and wrestles wild animals. Such a character is much better for an idealistic comic strip. Buck Rogers just took a good story and made it stupid.

I enjoyed the original novel.

It would be awesome if there would be a movie or a graphic novel based on the original novel.

Take a closer look at the cover he uploaded for "The Complete Epic Series."
(yes, there was a theatrical movie a year or two prior)
(not to mention the serial 40 years prior).

And yet you posted a picture for the TV series (the picture you posted was the issue, not the pre-existence of the movie)

I can... it was a couple of weeks ago (but the bulbs are getting real bad at our (last!) local drive-in's projectors, all the movies are almost too dark to see anymore!).

For those who still have that fondness.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: I'm very angry about Buck Rogers (7/31/2011 4:31:02 PM)

I tell my high school students that one day their kids are going to be laughing at their sagging pants and will listen to hip hop and say, "YOU ACTUALLY LIKED THAT!!!???"  And some of them get so mad at that .  It is quite funny.  Of course I was the same when I was a teen back in the hippy days.

Rap was around since centuries ago. I doubt it's going to go away and I doubt it's appeal to certain social groups will disappear.

Some how I can't picture Colombus or Frederick the Great scratching on a turn table.

It's because it's African music, not European.

This is a blast from the past ... I loved the show from back in the day. Surprising to hear they are making a game of such an old show.

I just liked looking at Erin Gray.
