+1 on Michael a/k/a nygiants59. He helped me out tremendously.

John 3rd -> RE: AE Grandmaster (8/23/2011 6:00:40 AM)

Canoerebel as a player or Sensei? I learn more towards Sensai.

PzB74 -> RE: AE Grandmaster (8/23/2011 7:52:56 AM)

It was with some concern I came over this threat [;)]
First of all, thanks to all of you that honor me with your nominations - I'm not worthy [&o]

As mentioned, because of lack of hours in the day I'm not the omnipresent Guru on this forum like Mogami used to be.
I still think if any, Mogami is the true Grandad Grandmaster of WitP!

Remember I played PacWar (Pacific War) with Mogami eons ago, he was always around and answered questions and comments.
I think this kind of capacity should be appreciated more than a players win - loss ratio on the battlefields of the South Pacific.

So many great players in this forum but sometimes I do feel that AndyMac is getting an unfair hearing; having played PacWar - UV - WitP and AE from the Jap side for a decade
it's not easy for Andy to fight a Scen 2 game against me and a strengthened Jap Empire. Andy is a master of the land battles as well as with his LBA. I like to play with my ships, so there we have it!-)

PS! I do have played Allied side LoBaron.
Played it as much as Jap side in UV but since a grand campaign takes forever I had to pick a "main" side and ended up with Japan as I like the challenge.
The Allied campaigns I played in WitP ended prematurely as my opponents went to Afghanistan and Iraq...real war called.

Nemo121 -> RE: AE Grandmaster (8/23/2011 10:08:45 AM)

John,

I dion't see why someone cannot be both. In fact I think it is quite likely that several people would be represented on both lists.

As to adding the fourth criteria. I wouldn't be in favour of that for a very simple reason. I think it would exclude people who are motivated to teach and have been found to be helpful in explaining things to others but who might pitch their explanations at a particular level.

E.g. Someone who pitches their explanations at a newbie level - Sardaukar for example - does provide a very useful service and idoes, IMO, warrant a nomination as Sensei. On the other hand his explanations will be of little use to more advanced players.

The situation is even worse when you are talking about someone pitching explanations of advanced concepts. This isn't a paid lecturing job so some element of pitching the points made at a particular level and accepting that it may be a year or two of play before others have enough basic and intermediate knowledge to begin really using those points in-game must, IMO, be accepted. I don't buy into the thing that all lessons can appeal equally to all levels of students at all times. I think that's just far too PC and unrealistic. Sure you have to bring weaker students along but at some point you have to recognise that to understand certain points you need to understand certain fundamentals and thus some "streaming" is important. If that wasn't the case then you'd just be able to lump all 4 years of a degree course in together and let them go to whatever lectures they wanted whenever they wanted so long as they went to them all in the four years. That, obviously, isn't feasible or even commonsensical.

So, I think that fourth criteria is not a great idea on the basis that it would create what I can only assume is this unintended consequence.

PzB,
Aye, I think that when one player is very good at certain things it often serves to make the other's play look "bad" when, really, that is merely a reflection of how good the other player's play is. Of course the converse can also occur. I think the former is happening in your game vs AndyMac while the latter is, possibly, happening in Greyjoy's game.

Andy Mac -> RE: AE Grandmaster (8/23/2011 11:39:48 AM)

Oh I made a few corkers of strategic mistakes as well but I have nothing if not tenacity to come back !!!!.

'buck fever' off of DEI being one and the flyby of Line Islands being the 2nd that spring to mind.

I would surmise that very few players would have seen a surprise invasion by 4+ allied divs in mid 43 backed by the full USN that captures a working airbase on day 1 and is entrenched ashore as an opportunity to spank the allies........

Ignore my mistakes in that campaign and just think about the audacity of a counter invasion in the teeth of what I had brough for that campaign. The willingness to roll the dice when its warranted is the key - yes I had some bad luck but very few Japanese players would have played that as aggressively most would have pulled back and tried to shorten their lines.

Andy

Cap Mandrake -> RE: AE Grandmaster (8/23/2011 4:12:57 PM)

I propose some type of handicapping system as one would for horse racing or yacht racing.

For eg., how about "Best AE Grandmaster without having read the manual"

or maybe

"Most Improved"

Canoerebel -> RE: AE Grandmaster (8/23/2011 4:19:55 PM)

And Miss Congeniality?

Should we nominate our wives for that?

Canoerebel -> RE: AE Grandmaster (8/23/2011 4:28:18 PM)

I was gonna nominate Paul Miller....

[:'(]

Canoerebel -> RE: AE Grandmaster (8/23/2011 4:29:48 PM)

On second thought, please don't allow me to hijack what can be a useful thread. I apologize and hope the rest of you guys can refrain from the temptation to participate in the hijacking.

I must admit I am similar to Sandra Bullock, except in looks, figure and bank balance.

Hijack is such a harsh word. Besides, I think we are nearing consensus. The true AE Grandmasters should be required to enter their moves with a 120lb jockey on their back....and they should feel the whip if they take too long too.

That should een things out a bit

Alfred -> RE: AE Grandmaster (6/14/2020 9:35:28 AM)

Continuing my trip down memory lane ....

Although the thread dates from 2011 I thought it would provide useful information for new players seeking PBEM partners.  Plus it is time the list of AE Grandmasters were updated to include those who only took up the game post 2011.  So time to nominate the most recent worthy recipients of the accolade.

Alfred

Andy Mac -> RE: AE Grandmaster (6/14/2020 11:40:24 AM)

its so hard PZB is still the best I ever played his use of SCTF's left me dizzy

I wish with hindsight I had stuck with Nemo it would have been so much fun but I just couldn't cope with the mod or the style.

Last 5 years I have either been absent or only working on AI's not had much time for PBEM so not taken any games out of 44 in a while so I just don't know

mind_messing -> RE: AE Grandmaster (6/14/2020 12:19:05 PM)

PzB's tactical successes were amazing, but there's more to playing Japan than generating impressive combat reports. In some sense I compare PzB with Pyrrhus of Epirus - with the supply and fuel expenditure being unacceptably and unsustainably large.

Lokasenna (rightly) gets my first nomination. He is, as far as I know, the only player who's strategy to destroy the KB was to lose a pair of fleet carriers to encourage the IJN to fall into a trap. On top of that there's the diligent and yeomanlike play as both IJ and Allies

Lowpe gets a nomination for a degree of masochism that the IJ High Command can only aspire to.

Obvert also, as I don't believe there's any other player that has as much late-game experience as he does (at least not in AAR'd games).

...I did? I haven't run a turn in so long, I've forgotten what I was even doing, let alone what's happened ;)

Sardaukar -> RE: AE Grandmaster (6/17/2020 3:46:07 PM)

While being nominated in this thread and proud of it, there is one difference:

Almost all of my advice is towards newbies, so more of "sempai" (senior student in dojo and often instructing newcomers). So not really sensei (master) who would instruct advanced and senior students.

What does it take to be a senior student? An AARP card? Being forgetful? No longer have a suit that fits?

I resemble that description!

AW1Steve -> RE: AE Grandmaster (6/17/2020 6:26:20 PM)

I'd like to see a category of "Young Turks" as masters. People who were relatively new when this thread premiered , but now approach , and might actually be considered (despite their youth). For that category I nominate Chickenboy. AKA LYB$&&^%$$^&U&*U!!!!!!!!!!![:D] As you might discern , I've played against him many times . And each time been humiliated! [:(]

I thought that he preferred the 75mm German pak. But slingshot ammo, I can get a lot of that around here.

He did not mind his mother visiting, it was his father's visits that disturbed him.

THAT Star Trek series was before my time, old timer. [:'(]

What's the gist of the episode, or do I have to look it up on Memory Alpha?
