Hello, this will be my first WITP:AE AAR. I've been playing the game ever since it came out, but mostly on and off, played several shorter scenarios, and a few months of a GC against the AI as the US.

This is my first MP GC, and my first ever GC as the IJ. I will be posting updates in this thread, and ask the esteemed community for an occasional tip or two. My opponent is TLG who is a considerably better player than I am. That's his nickname from the Paradox Interactive forums, but I think he is usking a different one here. Just not sure what it is, but he'll know to stay away after seeing the title. [:D]

So without further ado; I've read a ton of AARs and support threads before starting this campaign, but that's no subsitute for real experience, so I've made a couple of mistakes right off the bat. But let's start at the beginning, this is from the raid on Pearl:

Fairly decent, but I did end up losing 1 Zero, 7 Kates and 1 Val. I don't think KB will stick around for another day, I'm gonna send it west to interfere with the evacuation of the Philippines.

But now we come to the crux of the problem, my incredibly stupid assault on southern Malaya. [8|] For some reason I expected the Allied airpower there to be a joke, and I decided on a risky invasion of Mersing. And this is what happened:

I still have around 5000 troops on the beach, with another 1500 yet to unload (I have used the Singora Invasion and Singora Invasion II TFs for the attack on Mersing), but the Brits in Mersing are a lot stronger than I anticipated and there's no way I can break through them without reinforcements.

What should I do? Withdraw or attempt to hold out?

I can post info on other theatres as well, but Malaya is the most critical ATM.

I'd do the following:

- vector in amphibious TFs with ground units to assault the base
- set the troops on the base to defend
- fly in supplies if they need them.
- vector in a surface TF with CA & DD to help draw off enemey aircraft and protect the amphibious TFs.
- fly LRCAP if you can over your TF(s)
- ground attack enemy units at Mersing base to keep their heads down and increase disruption

Thanks. This was my thinking as well. Either pull out or throw whatever I can into Mersing. So I'll try the latter. [:D] I already have a TF with a handful of CAs and DDs on the way, and I'll reroute an amphibious TF there from a non-crucial part of northern Malaya.

Now that I think of it objectively there's no sane reason to pull a risky stunt like that this early on. You don't profit that much if you succeed (you'll get Singapore sooner or later anyway), but you can lose a lot if you fail.

Apparently, my Pearl strike did extensive damage. Most importantly: it managed to cause damage to his repair yards.

If it wasn't for that old tin can and its super accurate torpedoes, turn 1 wouldn't have been half bad.

EDIT: and apparently having an AM and a PM strike is fairly rare. Excellent!

Welcome!

The Mersing gambit is a gamble and you've ended up on the wrong side. Good Luck with the rest.

Ah, glad to see it is being done by at least some people. Any notable successes? [:D]

Absolutely. Couple of AAR's that have used it. If you can get your armor across and cut-off Singapore, it can help a lot. BUT, the downside is exactly what happened to you. Loss of a lot of troops and ships. Replaceable, but it delays your timetable.

Gonna be interesting to watch your recovery on this. Seriously, Good Luck!

Thanks. When I get the turn I'll post some screenies!
