If for no other reason than to play the Axis side better I was inspired by Tarhunas' post on playing both sides in a game. I even read parts of the manual! I get the theory of evacuation of industry but how do you actually do it? [&:]

It is a bit un-intuitive, and I don't think it is explained very well in the manual.

First select rail mode and show industry.
Then click on the city with industry you want to move.
In the top right corner the city name will be displayed in a little box. Click on that, which will show a dialog where you can select what industry you want to move.
Lastly, with the dialog still open, right click on the map on the destination hex and the industry will move.

and dont bother moving anything that will become obsolete in a couple of turns; the further you move the more damage it sustains and thus takes longer to come back online, and I think when moving HI and Armaments, make sure your destination has a Railyard to allow supplies to reach these factories...and read the rules carefully on the partial movement of factories...

I'm not sure that's true. I don't recall that ever being claimed before. However, it'd be nice to get confirmation on whether it is.

It is explained, but earlier than most things are explained. Section 5.3.2.2. Strategic Rail Movement Soviet Factory Evacuation, pages 48-9 in the most current rule book. The part about the distance causing more damage is unsubstantiated, but my observations back up what Tarhunnas says.

I believe I have the latest version of the Manual (v0.25 Jun 19, 2011); but I don't see anywhere in either Section 5.3.2.2 or Section 21.2.1 to which it refers, which says that the further you move factories the more damage they sustain. In any event I ran a test moving some factories short distances (Leningrad to Cherepovets and from Kharkov to Voronezh) and then reloading and moving them long distances (Leningrad to Nizhny Tagil and Kharkov to Magnitosk) and there was no difference in the damage done to the factories. So I don't think the distance moved has any effect on the damage done to the factories.

One odd thing I did note though is that the HI factories I moved out of Leningrad took more damage (88%) then the Armament factories (72%) I moved out of Leningrad, while the HI factories I moved out of Kharkov took less damage (75%) then the Armament factories (87%).

From my limited exp with this game, it seems to me that the damage number is directly related to the amount of that type of factory you move out.

For example, if I move out ALL of that cities 15 ARM facs, they will be at 50% damage. If I Move out 1 of them the damage will be much higher. Same applies to unit factories....if I move out say all of my lagg-3 facs I'll be near 50% damage, where as if I choose 1 to move in an attempt to just keep that fact alive hoping it'll grow back up in time, its damage is over 90%.

I can get some actual numbers when I get home from work.

Actually ran some numbers and tests with this last night. The basic formula for factory damage on movement is this:


100-((Number of factories being moved/Total number of factories of that type)*50)=XX% damage.


Examples:

Moving all 20 of your Armored car factories out of LG.

100-((20/20)*50) = 50% damage.

Moving 10 of your 20 AC facts:

100 - (10/20)*50 = 75% damage.

Moving 1 of 20 factories = 98% damage (with rounding)
Moving 3 of 30 factories = 95% damage.


So it is always better to move as many factories as you can in order to keep the damage and repair time as low as possible.

Thank you Vyper. I never knew this and I doubt very many people did. I'll certainly keep this in mind.

I have just upgraded to 1.08beta and was about to try the Sovs - I cannot see the >> dialogue to move factories when I select a location to move (Minsk) in T1. Is there a time limit, or am doing something wrong here to open the move dialogue.

Yep, Fac evacuation was delayed by one turn. That's when the first realworld evacuations started.

Vipers figures are correct however it only applies to named factories, IL-2, T-40 etc. Moving any part of a named factory results in the moved being damaged and any unmoved part being destroyed.

Generic factories Arm, Veh, etc do not have this problem and can be moved piece meal.

Distance has no part to play. With the distances involved you'd be hard pressed to get a train to and from the Urals in a week.
