Any tips for defense scenarios? The game is highly skewed to the attacking side as they earn more money when they capture more cities. This gives them more and more replacements while the defender gets less and less. So withdrawing to preserve your troops will just make your opponent stronger. Proper use of combined arms will easily defeat a unit defending a city.

My Army was wiped out in the defensive scenarios so I have no cores for Berlin.
I am tempted to do the very gamey deed of loading the previous scenario and not use any of my core units so that they are available in Berlin.

A few pointers that works for me;

1. Expect to lose some core units
2. If you have not built your air force by now, you are F***ed
3. Utilize rivers. Force the enemy to attack from the rivers
4. Have a reserve, so that you can keep some units in the rear to rebuild them, and some at the front line
5. Pull back when you are about to be overrun
6. Gain control over the skies
7. Use your Paratroopers (you have a couple of these, right?) to retake cities behind the enemy lines
8. TDs, AA and arty are nice
9. Do NOT place tanks in cities as this makes them easy targets for infantery
10. At every possible oppertunity go after enemy artillery
11. Always leave your units with one open heax to the rear so they can retreat instead of surrendering

Ok I don't have paratroops and my air force are just 3 good fighters and two strat bombers. :(
I guess I'll just play through Berlin and start from the top again.

You need Tiger II's to win Bagration, as many as you can afford!

You can get by with 2 more fighters in Bagration, just be methodical and take out at leat 2 of the Russian air units each turn you can fly and eventually you will gain air superirotiy. For Berlin you'll need another fighter or two, depending on whether you face a two front figth or a single front, and even more Tiger II's [:)].

Replayed and only survivors are a Tiger II, JagdPanther, Grenadier. :(
But better than my previous battle.

This is why I recommend more aerial units. Enemy aerial units will inflict damage to your units, and this again means they cost you prestige (in terms of replacement), as well as reducing your entrenchment levels, meaning your units are more prone to damage from ground attacks as well.
I tend to leave Poland with 2 fighters and 1 strategic bomber as well as the tactical you start with. Then during Norway I will buy another Strategical bomber and a fighter. Low countries I will add another fighter and a tactical bomber, and yet one fighter more in France, and again one more in the next mission, no matter what battle this is (Britain or not).
Aerial units perform alot better with experience, and this is why I buy them early on.

Paratroopers are the units that wins me decisive victory in the Low Countries by allowing me to seize bases in the rear.

In the defensive missions this usually allows me to clear the sky by turn 3, leaving my units free from aerial attacks.

I was just recommending what he could do in his current situation. You can win the air war with 5 fighters, even if 2 are inexperianced, but it can take a while.
In my current game (Colonel leve ready for Bagration) I only have 5 but they are 3 star units so occasionally they will take out an enemy unit in one shot, though mostly they do between 5-8 but then my FB's can finish them off. I don't like to go overboard on air as once you have superiority the fighters are pretty useless except for strafing infantry and artillery. I'd rather have 2 extra tanks than fighters as they can always fire! [:)]

I can see that point, I do however not agree [:D]
Part of what makes this game great, there is no "right" answer, only what works for different people.
For me, airpower is a must. Furthermore, you say your fighters can only strafe inf and arty. Nah. Anything on a river, alot of tanks (warning, learn which ones will shoot back), arty, inf, and they do also reduce fortification levels so they are good throughout the game for me, but as I said, different people, different strategies [:)]

My son and I have been playing Hotseat and we're finding the defense with the advantage. I'm wondering, selecting FM level doesn't have an impact on Hotseat mode? Anyone?

jomni -> RE: Defensive strategies (8/18/2011 7:04:37 AM)

Lost my campaign in the Berlin scenario (enemy from both sides).  I'm playing normal and have only a few Major Victories, most are minor and a couple of losses.
Looks like the best defense is offense.  I must strive to get major victories early on so that I will not be faced with the similar (but historical) situation.

As far I as I know Field Marshal only affects the level of A.I. play, the amount of prestige gained and the amount of experience earned for the human player(s?).

So for Hotseat and Multiplayer Scenarios it most likely doesn't have much impact.

There's a excellent campaign graph over at Slitherine forums:
