nukkxx5058 -> Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/15/2011 12:18:34 PM)

Hi, I just noticed this game by browsing the forum. I missed it before. And I can see that it's a very popular forum given the number of posts here. Is this game real good ? is it "grognard" or kind of easy to play ?

In brief: should I buy it ?

Thank you for your answers.

well this game is different than most because it can be everything depending on the scenario you are playing. The out of the box random games are really quite simple but there are some beautiful scenarios like Grumpymels ETO that are grognard Masterpieces and wonderfully crafted.

This game is a million games in one, its a modders dream and its a strategy game lego set.  There are more scenarios than you could play in two years time and more being built.

Its a bargain at 10 times the price.

It has a great community and you get to talk directly to the developer if you need tech help. He is on the boards every day.

I bought AT back in 2007 and it is the best $20 I ever spent in my life.

Yes its worth buying.

Complexity is at a similar level as TOAW.
It has better clarity but requires more manual control for units (continuous replenishment) and production in the cities (each turn requires new orders for most cities).

it is just a great game, everyone should buy it and design scenarios.

TOAW complexity maybe, but me I could never stomach the "turn burn", ATG is way more fluid and intuitive. For me "War in the East" and "ATG" are two shining examples of warmgaming.
Sure the manual control leads to some extra mouse clicks, but it has the *huge* advantage that you as a player can decide what unit goes where, and what that unit looks like. Say just a few troops and AT guns/ MG guns for defensive purposes on a quite front, and lots of tanks on the busier parts where the air is heavy with lead.
And you can be assured that even the standard AI can whip you butt, let alone AI+ or ++. Latest random game I'm playing has me already facing Inf. Guns lvl III (!!) where I just managed to have Inf lvl II... You *must* manoeuvre carefully or you'll find yourself cut off *very fast* [:D] Especially when fighting in rough terrain, say woods/jungle/mountains, it can be a realy challenge.
So yeah, lots and lots of fun... and teeth gnashing too LOL

Jay Doubleyou -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/15/2011 9:07:34 PM)

ATG is an excellent game. Easy to learn, hard to master :)
It's not for grognards. If you are one, check war in the east.
But ATG is still much more fun due to the replayability thanks to all the scenario's that are included in the game, the random games and some of the excellent scenario's made by the community.

It's cheap and very well worth the money!

Falkon1313 -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/16/2011 2:43:31 AM)

Just got it recently, but I can say it's the best game purchase I've made in quite awhile.

I used to play grognard games, but haven't felt like it recently. I wanted something that I could set up and play, then go back and play again to try out a different strategy, all within a reasonable timeframe. Something not simplistic, having multiple aspects like supply, production, weather, force organization, and a variety of units, but still playable and comprehensible, with an easy to use interface. Something with a map size and unit density that I can easily wrap my head around. Something that would bring back the fun I had when first playing the classic board wargames. ATG hits that spot for me.

I've been playing small random games, but there are also a lot of scenarios, including some pretty big ones with a lot of detail, events, and special rules. So when I feel like something more in-depth, it'll be there.

Also been playing with the editor a little. Looks very flexible and powerful. There's obviously potential for a variety of very different scenarios/campaigns of varying size and complexity.

crazyjohn -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/16/2011 8:27:48 AM)

One disadvantage is there is no good tutorial that makes it easy to learn about how the combat system works in depth and you end up with a lot of variables that are on the screen but have no idea what their there for.

nukkxx5058 -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/16/2011 9:42:40 AM)

The problem with me is that I'm a little bit borred with WW2. Too many games about it. So I'm always very curious when I see a game covering other periods.

I'm currently installing the game :-)))

nukkxx5058 -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/17/2011 7:23:47 AM)

OK, the game is installed. My very first impression was not very good. Sorry ... But immediately after having finished the tutorial and tried my first game, I am convinced this game is a pure gem ! [&o] I'm under the shock ! [X(] Wow ! what a game ! [&o] And if on the top of that it's modable and online multiplayer [pbem at least] then I'm afraid my civil life is now over. I officially died the 17th of august 2011[:D]

Jay Doubleyou -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/17/2011 9:38:17 PM)

welcome to the club [:D]

Warspite3 -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/18/2011 9:36:17 PM)

It really is a great wargame, although I had PT and AT, I just bought ATG and been playing it a lot since I got it. One thing you will also find, the game has a really good editor. I was just messing around the other day, made a small map with some islands and the AI beat me on my own map. [X(]

nukkxx5058 -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/19/2011 8:54:15 AM)

Just one problem however ... contrary to what I was initially thinking and dispite its 30.000 posts the forum seems now quite dead ! Where is the ATG online community?

Grymme -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/19/2011 1:00:07 PM)

I think a lot of people are american so the forum sees most of its traffic on different times than us Europeans.

Though, the forum has been collecting posts since 2007 so it is perhaps a little bit more quiet than it used to be. Anyway, its a great game and i am sure you will have much fun with it.

Josh -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/19/2011 1:14:37 PM)

Grymme is right, the forum is not as busy as it used to be. But even saleshits like the new Panzer Corps have 30 new posts every day for the first two weeks, after that it's much more quite.
When AT was released it had many hits/posts each and every day, it was a new game so lots and lots of questions about this and that. Now ATG is released the veteran players don't post much, and only a small percentage of new players do post topics anymore. Of all the games Matrix has published only a few have lots of topics (like TOAW, JTCS, WitE, War in the Pacific), but that doesn't mean the other games are dead, far from it.

british exil -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/19/2011 6:00:30 PM)

I agree. The forum is a bit quiet as Josh and Grymme pointed out. The vets already have a hang of the game and just play. Whereas the newbies can either post or read older posts. One thing is for sure though, if a newbie or anyone post a query or question, an answer will be given within a very short time. No matter what timezone a player maybe in.

No question is too trivial. Sometimes a question is posted and even a long time AT player scratches his wondering what the answer might be.

So nukkxx and other wannabe ATG players feel free to post.

Mat

Strategiusz -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (8/19/2011 7:05:54 PM)

I would like more topics in The War Room written by veterans.

Goodmongo -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (9/30/2011 8:17:01 PM)

I'm a newbie to the game.  In fact I bought it just to play Grymme's Vietnam scenario.  I mainly post there to give feedback but that doesn't mean I haven't read the ther sections.  I think the reason it is a little quiet is that many questions and answers can be found in existing posts.  So new posts are more limited to new scenarios, new questions or people not searching for the answers already given.

ATG is a fun and nice little game that should give hundreds of hours of enjoyment.  Eventually, I'll be getting into some WW3 and WW2 scenarios but for now I'm focused (to Grymme's consternation [:D]) on the really great Vietnam scenario.

Shadehawk -> RE: Wow ! what a busy forum ! (10/1/2011 8:57:01 AM)

Another newbie here. Just bought the game and so far I'm having a blast! And that's only from the random games toward the AI. [:)]
I have found answers to all my questions so far by searching the forum, so I haven't really had any reason to post before.

Anyway, great game, great community and excellent work done by many modders!
