One of the coolest things about WitE for me is that, while it's on a divisional/corps level, you can split divisions into their component units (regiments, if I'm not mistaken) to cover more ground. I love this level of detail and the added complexity (and, the ease with which it can be done).

But... is it a feasible tactic? How often do experienced players do this, and under what circumstances?

(Note: I'm asking from the Axis POV, as I imagine the Soviets have less of a need for this.)

I use it mostly when I want to span out a breakthrouh to encompass a large an area as possible while still maintaining a perimeter of units/ZOC. This seals the area from anything but the closest, fastest enemy units. I usually move the unit as a divison up to the last 1/3 of its move. Then break it up and spread out. I also tend to gather an build the unit back up on the next turn or two.

For the most part, there are limited times when I find the need to split units. ( mostly due to the increase command burden and movement costs imposed when broken-down. )

1. To allow me to completely encircle an enemy unit when otherwise, I would be just shy of closing a pocket.
2. On defense, there are times when I need "pickets" to either cover a retreat, or reduce contact with the enemy and the associated attrition.
3. When chasing down partisans or anti-partisan city garrison duty.

Use them in 1941 MUD; the Red Army isn't strong enough to take-on even a Regt in the mud. Send the other 2 Regts back of the line to DIG, or REFIT, or both. Or just not take attrition losses.

Later on, splitting the LW Field Divisions into 3 Diggers isn't a bad idea. They stink in combat, but are OK with a shovel.

Just don't tell Hermann you are making his flyboys do manual labor.
