So... do I play these in order? Or does the expansion just make the base game better....

Hello Javaslinger and welcome to Distant Worlds.

When starting a new game, the last setup screen is the Victory conditions screen. If you have both DW and the expansion installed, you'll see 2 checkboxes. One is for the DW story and the other is for RotS story. You can play both, none at all, or either or, it's your choice. They don't interfere with one another.[:)]

If you are looking for advice play with both stories on.
When you encounter the 'end game' I will not spoil for you, that is the Return of the Shakturi expansion story that you can choose to have on or off.
Personally I haven't played without both story elements on since ROTS, it doesn't always have a big impact.

By the time you'll get to the storylines you'll discover that there's much you still need to learn, the game has a lot to take in. And yes, the expansion does make the vanilla way better but most of these good things are not storyline related.
