DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/12/2012 1:24:11 AM)

Here you go Kurt.

Darwin has the Ozzie ID. US ID is moving up from Sydney. 3 Brit Bdes are moving to Derby with a CV TF and a SAG. I have 3 Arty units waiting to be transported to there final destinations. 2 Ozzie armoured rgts moving to their departure points along with 1 AA, 3 eng units, 2 AF BF and 2 Nav BF. Some of these forces are a several days away.

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/12/2012 1:25:19 AM)

double post

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/12/2012 1:30:49 AM)

Koniu only sent me the replay for this turn.

I-159 is still floating and took a shot at a PG.  The PG missed it this time.

A sub off of Darwin took a shot at our APDs.  The APDs punished it for it.  6 hits with 3 hull breaches recorded 2 severe flooding messages.  Also Heavy damage was reported.  If it makes it back to port it will be out for awhile.[:D]

Koniu kept his subs in shallow waters again, But our ASW guys were asleep at the wheel.

Our bombers didn't fly in China.[sm=nono.gif]

Crackaces -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/12/2012 1:33:49 AM)

I am not sure of the soundness of invading Oz before securing the DEI ...I am thinking you will be able to find a weakness and shake the big bowl of jelly but good ..[8D]

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/12/2012 1:40:14 AM)

Crackaces, I don't think Koniu will attack Oz.  I think hes trying to secure DEI.  The forces I mentioned are for my ops to secure DEI and the future hostile take over of the DEI.  But I need to keep Ambon, Lautem, and Saumlaki.  They make a nice triangle of fighter coverage for TFs.  I want Koepang because it is a Lv 4 AF and Koniu can use it for fighters and bombers to interdict my SLOCs.  I can't have that.  I have future plans for DEI but I want to secure those bases before moving on.

zuluhour -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/12/2012 1:46:52 AM)

If you intend to hold/fight from Darwin I would urge you to get as much supply into it as fast as you can. I could not keep up with Darwins needs after spring. The IJAF rules from Timor and Taberfane and forced me to withdraw deep into the interior, setting up fields etc.. I think Darwin draws little if anything down the dirt roads. More power to you and AFBs everywhere if you can hold and supply Ambon. I wish I had taken Taberfane (gave it up for free) just for some PBYs and SBDs behind some mines and large caliber naval guns. The longer you hold Ambon now IMHO, the longer it will be before he can think about north Australia

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/12/2012 2:04:03 AM)

Kurt, Between Darwin and Katherine I have over 70,000 supply points.  Derby has 15,000 supply points. I am moving another 50,000 moving right now to Darwin and Derby.  80,000 fuel points are just days away from Derby right now.

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/12/2012 11:03:42 PM)

Ok, guys I need you input.  So delurk or decloak and say something.

Hankow
Jap base with Lv 7 AF 102 Fighters, 250 bombers, 46 Aux, 27 units 14,500 men, 200 guns, 174 AFVs. DL is 10/10

My plan is to send in 12 Chinese bombers (GB 50-70s) at night at 10,000.  21 US 2E bombers (GB 60-70s) at night at 3,000.  35 Brit 2E bombers (GB 60-70s) during the day at 10,000 with 9 US 2E bombers (GB 60-70s) and 8 4Es (GB 70s).

I have swept this hex with no contacts.  I will send P38s and 40s in during the day.  I expect he has AA here but not for sure.  I haven't tried low night bombing yet.  So I don't know how the bombers will fare with this.  The night bombers will attack from Changsha.

Jap LCUs are still moving towards Changsha.  I have 4,400 AV behind 6 forts and building.  I also have the AA, Arty, and AT units here also. I am about ready to break my 1,600 AV out of Kukong.  They will be heading north when they break out.

Rangoon
73 fighters, 33 bombers, 56 aux

Chang Mai
107 fighters, 102 bombers and 33 aux

NorPac
A 2 ship TF is moving around Attu.  I still think he is probing my defenses here.

Bonin Islands
Got 2 heavy radio messages from this area.  I also see a TF here KB maybe.

DEI
got a radio message in the Java sea also.
Got a radio message at

zuluhour -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/13/2012 12:22:26 AM)

We have a house rule on night bombing:
no bombing below 10ooo'
only at >50% moonlight

This probably is no longer needed as the patch breaks up the raids into packets: the bombers have far more shots than the CAP: damage seems to be minimized compared to stock AE version (IMHO). I say go for it! Eager for the results. Im guessing on the scale you are planning 15-20 base hits 3-9 damaged aircraft on the ground.

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/13/2012 1:56:38 AM)

Kurt, we have no night bombing rules.  No 4E below 10k.

I am hopeing for more damaged and destroyed AC the 9.  I hope to damage a few during the night and then finish them off during the daytime bombing.  I just looked and we have 96% moonlight tonite.

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/13/2012 3:41:12 AM)

I have been noticing that my US 2Es have actually been strafing and bombing while on Low Ground.  I like it.  I also have to say that I like the APD and AVDs.    And Please God I am tired of having to listen to the Bachelor going on behind me as the boss watches it.  AHHHHHHH[sm=sterb032.gif]stupid bachelor show[sm=00000055.gif]  yes I am telling you how I feel.

Saros -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/13/2012 4:47:08 AM)

It might be better to send the bombers in at 6K so they use their ground attack skill rather than the Low ground skill unless you have specifically trained them for that.
As for strafe/bomb attacks from US 2E I think only airframes designated attack bombers (The B-25s mostly?) will do that and only if they are set to attack in a certain altitude band. I can't recall off the top of my head the exact models/altitudes that will do it cause I haven't played the allied side in a long long time.
As for IJA flak I wouldn't worry about it, its pretty darn useless unless you stack truly absurd numbers of heavy 75mm/88mm/100mm tubes in one hex. The 25mm and 13mm AAMG don't really do a lot.

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/14/2012 11:16:02 PM)

Saros thanks for your input.  Please post some more.

31st May

KB Bonin Islands maybe
MKB unknown

Not much action this turn.

Tahiti
I-2 takes 2 hits by ASW.  100 mines will be laid tonite.

Timor AO
Troops are unloading from transports in Oz ports.  They will be moved to stageing areas for movement to there final destinations.

China
Only the Chinese bomb at nite they destroy a Lilly.

Rangoon
Hudsons attack the AF during the day.  They destroy multiple AC on the ground.  In all 12 AC were destroyed during the day.

Still getting Heavy Radio traffic near the Bonins Islands.  This TF is moveing SE towards Turk.

zuluhour -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/15/2012 12:02:49 AM)

I'M still here, but reading both AARs, rooting for the red white and blue though!

The only thing I have seen the 25mm do well is straffing .. that has been pretty consistent that any flak will spare an airbase from a devasting straffing raid.

Saros -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/15/2012 5:08:54 AM)

Well the 25mm has a ceiling of 7k ft so anything 8k plus is totally immune to it. It will do a good job against strafers or divebombers as it has a good RoF and something like 50 effect rating which is really high. Most 25mm guns are restricted to the tiny Machinecannon CO's in Manchuria though although in late '42 a bunch of base forces and navy air bn's upgrade to have a few some base forces even get 8cm and 12cm DP guns which I hear can be okay-ish CD guns in a pinch but are terrible against planes for the same engine limitations that the allied 5in DP suffers from.
This limitation to 7K really means that allied bombers can fly at 8k while IJN/AAF have to be above 10K else they get torn up by 40mm bofors and the similar guns. [:(]

Anyway Docup I also read your opponents AAR so I won't comment on operational matters but I can complan extensively about the weakneesses in the Japaneese OOB [:D]

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/15/2012 11:36:31 PM)

1st June

KB unknown
MKB IO NW coast of Oz

NW coast of Oz
MKB finds the TF carrying the East African Bde, they sink all but one ship. Got to roll with the punches I guess. I have 2 Brit CVs close by that are fighter heavy. I don't think they can take on the whole MKB. I also want to use them as fighter cover for Op Dumbo. In 8 days a US carrier will arrive at Balboa it will be sent to the IO.

Ambon
Air bombings and I see another ID is prepping for here. I need to get a move on with supplies and reinforcements.

Tahiti
Our minelayer eats a Jap fish. No mines were layed.

I think I will move ahead with the invasion of Ndeni. Maybe this will delay the reinforcement of Ambon.

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 12:05:23 AM)

We have 70 4E bombers at Darwin. I figure they can damage Kendri's AF pretty good. I just need to find a way to deal with the MKB. Any ideas?

North Burma
He has stopped his units from advancing north. He should of kept them going I am weak up there. The longer he waits the stronger I will get. The fleeing units from Rangoon are trying to cross a river to get into an open hex with a yellow road. Its being bombarded everday by a stronger Jap force.

Kukong
Chinese troops are being bombarded by air and land everyday. They are behind 6 forts though. He has twice the AV that I do. In 2 days I will open up the road and hex to the north so these forces can escape. 1,600 AV will be free to move north to our lines.

NorPac
Transports will pick up a Sep US IR to move it to Amachita(sp).

Ndeni
I have forces prepped for this location. I just need to get the transports to these troops and send them to Ndeni.

zuluhour -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 1:36:29 AM)

I've only had one operational fleet carrier so long, I would'ent know where to begin to deal with KB in blue water. My only recourse has been land based naval air and hords of subs.

Crackaces -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 4:20:49 AM)

For me Docup .. and you can read this in the AAR .. the MKB came calling in the worse of circumstances for the MKB .. completely detected and the IJ had no clue I had 3 CV's near Baker Island .. he attacked Baker Island I damaged 2 and sunk 1 [:D]

I look for opportunites where I have patrol advantages and then engage in cat and mouse .. so far after Baker Island my opponet lives in fear ..[8D] [The fear is mutual [;)] ]

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 10:50:49 PM)

Question folks.

Picture below. I am trying to move my stack from Kukong. I have a unit above Kukong. The hex should be open. I set my stack to move north it says that the stack is moving to the hex but my stacks arrow is moving south. Can someone help me out here.

Crackaces -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:12:55 PM)

Do a 'w' and show us the hexside ownership .. that might answer your question ..

zuluhour -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:13:55 PM)

Hit the "W" key and see who owns what hexside.

zuluhour -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:14:18 PM)

Damn your fast Aces!

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:21:26 PM)

here you go

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:29:52 PM)

Saros I understand.  But your still welcomed in here to apply your technical knowledge or whatever else you want to say.  Zulu, Crackaces thanks you guys are fast.  I will prob have a response or 2 before I'm done posting this.

2nd June

KB unknown
MKB NW IO off Oz coast

Timor AO
2 Japs TF coming down towards either Koepang or Dili.  One of the TFs consists of 3 ships the other has 10 ships in it.  Reinforcement convoy?  Getting closer to the start of Op Dumbo.

Lautem
Supply is 700.  Couple more runs of the APDs and we can put up some fighters and maybe bring in a big load of supply.

China
You can see the map.  Still the bombers won't fly I think it must be the weather.  No sweeps either.

not much this turn folks.  Oh we actually sink an ak around Japan.

Alfred -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:31:08 PM)

You don't own the Kukong NW hexside therefore your LCU can't retreat via that hexside. They are retreating via the only available hexside to them ie the SW hexside.

You actually have to move the LCUs which are outside of Kukong into Kukong to own the NW hexside.

Alfred

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:33:26 PM)

Thanks Alfred.

zuluhour -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:38:30 PM)

Alfred: It appears to the TWITs that the NW hexside is both allied and Japanese contolled, Is this possible without an IJ LCU ever crossing that NW hexside?

DOCUP -> RE: Operation Dumbo (3/16/2012 11:39:44 PM)

Oh forgot.  We swept a Jap LCU hex.  17 Oscars go down to our 5 P40E and 4 Hurri IIBs.
