As per subject heading, I know how to retrofit space stations to new designs but can you do it for mining bases?

Malevolence -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/27/2011 11:37:03 AM)

I don't think you can retrofit any bases other than space ports over colonies.

Data -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/27/2011 12:02:57 PM)

No, mining bases are built by us but owned by the private sector....you can only scrap them to rebuild a newer version atm

Ok thats all good. Is there a way to force the AI to use a design that i create? Basically I want a couple of guns on my mining bases if possible but the AI seems to think that designing them without guns is the way to go.

Welcome to the forum SpectralFreman! [:)]

Yes, just go to the design screen and create your new 'armed' mining base design. Then change the
design filter to show 'all non-obsolete designs'. Then just obsolete the original and any other
mining base designs you see, thus leaving the one you just designed the only one the AI can use
to build. This will work for any of the private ship/base designs! Hope this helps! [:)]

In addition, if you leave ship design on 'Auto', you will have to regularly go back and check
the design screen to make sure the AI hasn't built a new model and obsolete it if so.

SpectralFremen -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/28/2011 3:30:18 AM)

Hey :)
yeah I had worked that out so far. However I was hoping there was a way to make the AI not obsolete my designs all the time. I love the fact I can design all my ships/stations however it is a LOT of work to do it all manually all the time.

SpectralFremen -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/29/2011 5:21:23 AM)

Ok guys another question, is it possible to upgrade STATE owned stations that arent at a colony? It seems if they arent at a colony the only context menu option they get is "retire" and I havent been able to work out a way to make a construction ship go and upgrade it.
Is this doable?

Data -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/29/2011 7:33:25 AM)

I'm afraid not, only the colony side ones

Do you know if DW Legends will change that?
It would be much easier to make default design for mining base and let the AI fill in the blanks as the techonolgy
develops.

Well you have another option, you can leave automation off then just every so often (when technology goes on a step?) just shift click your designs you want the AI to automate and click Upgrade Selected, leaving your designs unselected and upgrade them yourself when you want to.

I was wondering what that button did. So "upgrade selected" just makes the AI redesign the selected model?

Yes - it will upgrade existing components with the newer ones, but it won't change the quantity of them, nor it will add or remove anything. For example, if you research first torpedo weapon technology, select frigate and click "Upgrade selected" torpedo won't be added. Since it doesn't change the quantities of (e.g. armor and shield) components you will get very strong, and very expensive models in the end.

Data -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/30/2011 9:51:22 AM)

very big and, most importantly, not feasible....if a new life support can do the job of previously 2 older ones than why have 2 new ones?

SpectralFremen -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/30/2011 10:38:33 AM)

Ok ok. Sweet that makes sense.
Another question on ship building, the AI seems to go massively overboard on reactors with its designs. Seems like it always has energy to spare (lots). Do i need "Excess energy output" to exceed "static energy usage" by a massive margin? Should I try and balance my design to have no 'waste'? Or is the excess energy there for a weapons firing buffer? I can't find any solid info on this ><

oxenshtrudel -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/30/2011 11:50:42 AM)

Excess energy output is used for weapons and engines. The static is what the ship will use when idle. There is a graph on the right side showing how much is used for engines at different speeds and in the weapon section you can see the weapons energy usage when firing.

tjhkkr -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/30/2011 12:46:43 PM)

If tinkering with designs is your passion, then I suggest you manually upgrade.
I hate to say it...
I love to tinker... I have AWACs ships, super-long range scouts, fast destroyers... I love fighters, but not all of my ships have fighters... and I even have stations that the primary weapons are fighters... and thanks to IGard's idea about having a second ship set that no one else uses, I am able to have enough pictures to represent these ships.
You learn very quickly in combat which idea's work, and which ones -- to put it candidly -- stink to high heaven. [8D]

SpectralFremen -> RE: Retrofit Mining Base (9/30/2011 12:56:58 PM)

Yeah i know what you mean. :)
I love how flexible the ship customization system is. If the price for that is a bit of MM then so be it. At the moment I am leaving on Automatic Ship design but I am adding and tweaking my own here and there. Now I just have to learn not to mass retrofit my specialty ships into my ships of the line by accident <_<
