solops -> Legends Questions (9/28/2011 5:54:01 PM)

Can the character system be turned off? I.e. play without any characters?

lordxorn -> RE: Legends Questions (9/28/2011 6:00:02 PM)

Why would you want that? Less micromanagement? I don't think it would require any?

For the rest of us we would love to rename some bridge commander of a capital class starship to Admiral Thrawn right?

Don't you think leaders is a good thing where units gain experience and become more effective?

solops -> RE: Legends Questions (9/28/2011 6:07:45 PM)

I don't want the MM and games I have seen with such a system get a bit warped. This was discussed in the forums when the idea was first mentioned. Personally, I think it is a game killer.

lordxorn -> RE: Legends Questions (9/28/2011 6:13:51 PM)

"Game Killer"

Well I really disagree, Star Wars Rebellion was a prime example of what can be done with a Character system.

J HG T -> RE: Legends Questions (9/28/2011 6:15:18 PM)

I don't like MMing lot either. But, from what I've understood from the little info we got the character system should be quite practical. You have pool of characters from which you just select characers and assing them to planets, fleets etc. After that the characters don't need any real MMing as they provide passive bonuses.
Only microing I can thing of is keeping track of all the characters, but from what I've seen from the screenshots it shouldn't be hard.

Still, if enough people think they should be optional...

Personally I can't wait to try out the characters.

I disliked that game because of the character system...and the weak AI. I hope you enjoy Legends. I will pass on it until it can be played without the character/experience system or if that system can be castrated.

tjhkkr -> RE: Legends Questions (9/28/2011 7:23:26 PM)

Wow! I hope for your sake there is a toggle for it...
I just LOVED Rebellion for that reason... but I respect the tastes of others...
Lots of people like monsters, and there are several in this contest I like, but by and large I like to turn them off... so we all have our tastes

I am absolutely sure you could play the game totally ignoring the characters without even noticing a difference. Do you use spys right now? They are characters after all. For that matter, fleet targeting component could be seen as having simillar effect as a character would.

Data -> RE: Legends Questions (9/28/2011 7:35:24 PM)

That's rping, we could find characters all over the place [:)]

Simulation01 -> RE: Legends Questions (9/28/2011 11:36:22 PM)

Did anyone here play Conquest: Frontier Wars?  It had a cool leader system.  The admirals were fleet based...they would take control of whole fleets and were optimized against certain factions and for certain fleet characteristics like carriers or Battleships.

Bingeling -> RE: Legends Questions (9/29/2011 12:06:33 AM)

I hope many features are configurable. I am no very keen on leaders, and I fear they will not improve the game. Borders/spheres of influence is also something I hope can be turned off, as this is also a "risky" area. I would love a good system for both, but I fear that it may be hard to pull off. I also suspect they are both features that may make the AI even worse...

As a very close example, I simply love that story lines are optional. I feel the game is much better without free tech handouts and silly debris fields.

SpectralFremen -> RE: Legends Questions (9/29/2011 2:59:13 AM)

I find it a bit rich someone is complaining about game features that haven't even gone live yet. Cut them some slack, they've made a good game so far why not wait and see what they produce before complaining? =|

Yep! Played it quite a lot years ago. Good game. The leader system worked great too.

Accidental douple post. Ignore this.

RP'ing is actually fun. The character system might allow for it, but I also bet you don't have to do a thing with it, just like the rest of DW, it should manage itself.

Data -> RE: Legends Questions (9/29/2011 2:50:10 PM)

Damn straight [:)]

J HG T -> RE: Legends Questions (9/29/2011 3:14:15 PM)

I just hope that we can rename characters like we can do now with planets and ships.

HsojVvad -> RE: Legends Questions (9/29/2011 5:28:25 PM)

What is MMing?

Micro Managing.

IE taking care of every last detail instead of letting your underlings handle things. [;)]

ASHBERY76 -> RE: Legends Questions (9/29/2011 7:24:59 PM)

With a living galaxy having a fully developed sim empire character system was a perfect fit.The whole game is designed for macro managment and leaders will be the same.

Webbco -> RE: Legends Questions (9/29/2011 8:24:29 PM)

I agree Ashbury, it just makes sense. I played Conflict: Frontier War aaages ago, and really struggled with the leadership system initially, but once I had fully understood it I used it all the time.I think it's always important to give things a chance first.

2guncohen -> RE: Legends Questions (9/30/2011 1:13:12 PM)

I remember the days I searched like crazy after the rumoured sequel of Conflict: Frontier War.
It was some leaked beta of the game who never saw production.

[:D] I even think I have it still somewhere on a backup drive.

Baleur -> RE: Legends Questions (9/30/2011 7:37:19 PM)

I don't see why you'd call it a game killer because of too much micro-managing..
There will probably even be an automation setting for it, given how this entire game is based around that idea. If you can automate fleet forming and spy action & recruiting, I'm sure you will be able to automate crew hiring and crew actions too (having the AI decide what fleet to put an admiral in would hardly be more complicated than other automation settings).

Furthermore, it is hardly micro-management anyway.. Hiring a guy and putting him in a fleet is not micro-managing, it is normal-managing.. Right in there between macro and micro.
Micro is when you fiddle with every tiny movement and attack order, using special abilities every second/minute.
Using ONE ability (do the characters here even have abilities you can use in combat?), is normal gameplay in a strategy game, not especially micro intensive.

And as for simply choosing and placing characters in fleets or colonies.. That's nothing new, in terms of macro/micro gameplay mechanics.
You place colonies, you click on a planet and click "build colony".
You place bases, you click on a planet or resource and click "order nearest constructor to build a base".
You click on a ship/planet and click "assign Joe Bloke".
Same thing, in terms of mouse clicking, different names.

If it is considered micro because we most likely will have to pay attention to what stats/skills a character has, again it is nothing different from the current gameplay..
We have to look at what stats / resources a planet has when deciding wether or not to colonize.
I'm not being sarcastic, it truly is the same blend of macro/micro. It is just your own view of it that makes it negative because you dont like the character aspect.

I'm assuming you hate games like Europa Universalis 3 too because it has characters that make a difference?
I'd suggest you to give it more of a chance, and you could find previously unseen levels of depth to the games that has good character systems.
And if it really is an issue with micro-managing that you have, give it a try anyway. Give it a shot. You might not hate it as much as your preconcieved notions tell you.
