SPRUANCE74 -> How to get planes to attack spotted ships & subs? (10/4/2011 8:46:14 PM)

I get frustrated when I see Jap ships around Lunga but my planes won't attack them as much as I want then to when I select Naval Attack with secondary Ground Attack seeming to opt for the Ground Attack. Should I omit Ground Attack as secondary? How to get the SBD's & TBFs to focus on the ships as primary since they have been seen?

Also, I wonder why so far my ASW planes have not attacked a single sub although they see them. How can I get them to do that?

Check the aggresiveness of the wing commanders the higher the more likely they'll attack. If low switch them out with a better leader.

ASW partols early in the war don't garner many results.

You need high exp in your air group pilots overall.

Then you need leaders with high Leadership and Inspiration to follow orders. There are a lot of checks to be made before a bombing mission will lift, most of which are based upon one of these two skills. Manual has details of all of the steps. You need to get familiar with them and then make sure you are setting up to allow for succcess.

TF commander also impacts this (need high air skill).

If you are USN and early war, your air groups are mostly fairly low exp. They aren't necessarily going to follow orders ...

If you want your Dauntlesses to Nav Att, put out search planes from the individual squadrons. Typically I use 20% Nav Search, defining the search arcs in the enemy's most likely track of movement. Some folks dont use search arcs, just assigning a % of squad to search. If Nav Att is the squd'ns primary mission, it will, IF IT CAN FIND THE ENEMY! The squad'ns will fly the secondary mission (Ground Att) if no enemy shipping is spotted. (Squd'ns must pass several checks to fly any mission-another topic in itself.)
Early game ASW search squd'ns must get their experience level up before you will see results. This will take several months. In all cases, a good leader w/high stats and agression will provide better results for training up as well combat results.

I have also noticed that the squadrons will not perform naval attack reliably if a member of their squadron did not see it. A good example of this is the Coral Sea scenario where the Yorktown is much further north than the Lex. When I first started playing, I would use the Yorktown's SBD's for all of the search functions of both task forces and reserve the Lex's aircraft for attack only. This procedure normally yielded the Yorktown's squadrons were the only ones that would perform naval attack and the Lex's squadrons would just sit on the ship and perform no sorties at all even though the ships were well in range.

I don't know if this is still valid or not or was fixed in the Beta.
